Do you think of Quinn as a boy name or a girl name?

The title pretty much sums it up. I was sure I was having a girl partly because I was so struck with the name Quinn and I was just so. Sure. that was what was meant to be. He's not a girl! So we abandoned that name but we have not come up with anything else we like. When I shared that this morning with some other friends, they were surprised and said they thought of Quinn as a boy name. So.....what do you think?

I have always thought it a masculine name. I've never heard it used for a girl. Perhaps I am really out of the loop. Just keep thinking of the old salt in Jaws.

I think of it as a boy's name, although I wouldn't be shocked to hear of it being used for a girl as well.

I definitely think of it as a girl name. Unless a shortened version of Quinten/Quentin. (Which we did consider for our #5! We decided against it b/c we didn't like the way it sounded in our NJ accents.)

I know several girls named Quinn, so I'm thinking that the girls are taking it over now.  For that reason, I'd be hesitant to name a boy that as this point.  I do know of a boy named Quinn though, and I like it for him as well.

 

I actually think it works for either a boy or a girl, but once people start using it as a girl's name, it usually becomes rare to be used for a boy anymore.

I can see people using it as a girl name and I am sure many have but IRL I have only met boys named Quinn.

I think of it as a boy's name. But there are a lot of current girl names that used to be boy names, so if you like it, don't worry about it.

I'm not sure if it's regional, but here in New England I know lots of girls named Quinn and only one male with the name.

It's similar to the name Kelly. When we traveled to England all the Kelley's we met were male, but here I wouldn't dream of naming a boy Kelley. I think geography plays a big part in the name game. If Quinn is a boy's name where you live, then go for it, or the more masculine Quintin would work as well.

I think of it as a boy's name, but there was the girl named Quinn on Glee, so that may have put that idea in people's heads...  her character's pretty much been written off and the show's jumped the shark, so that'll probably fade quickly... :)

We know three boy Quinns and one girl. We're in the PNW. I thought of it as a boy name until Glee came along.

Wow! I'm really surprised. I know a little girl named Quinn so I guess that colored my perception. This might breathe new life into our baby name discussions. A baby name site had it listed in popularity as 516 for girls and 280 for boys a few years ago. It's projected to increase 47% for girls and 13% for boys though, so......

I would expect an adult named Quinn to be a male. I think girls have overtaken the name though, so I would expect a child named Quinn to be a girl. I've only met female Quinns, and they were all teenage or younger. Quentin would definitely be a boys name.

Friends of ours just chose this name for their baby specifically because it was a gender-neutral name.  Their baby turned out to be a boy.

I've known a Quinton (boy) but no Quinns IRL. However, Quinn Cummings was a child actress ("The Goodbye Girl") who wrote a book about homeschooling her daughter. I have no idea if she's still homeschooling.

 

I think the name could go either way.
