Murphy101
Every year we hear about it and see it on tv commercials and so forth. Dh says its worse than Scottish food, which is based on a dare. Does anyone eat it or is it some kind of inside media joke or what? And if you like it...well happy thanksgiving!:)
MissKNG
I tried making it one year and it was just plain bland. I followed the Campbell's recipe too.
Parker Martin
Yes. Love it. But then, I am the best peson to have over for dinner. I love everything.

Murphy101
Can't say I've ever tried it. It doesn't appeal to me at all. It doesn't appeal to me either. I tried it once with the mistaken notion that it had to taste better than it looked and found it could taste worse.:tongue_smilie:
G5052
I saute a sweet onion and make a light white cheese sauce and top it with panko crumbs. Mmmm!

MissKNG
I saute a sweet onion and make a light white cheese sauce and top it with panko crumbs. Mmmm! I think it would have been a lot better if I spiced it up with extras but I was making it for the first time, so I stuck to the recipe. Alte Veste Academy
Well, I think that this thread might get locked up faster than a discussion about shopping carts and crock pots. :tongue_smilie: Thanksgiving traditions are pretty emotional ground. I'm sure you eat something that would gross me out too. :D I never had it as a child. It was not part of our tradition. However, DH had it every year and loved it, so I incorporate it into our Thanksgiving. Last year, I convinced him to let me try Alton Brown's version. It was delightful for all of us. Still, your question seems designed to hurt feelings and invite conflict. Is your turkey still frozen, leaving you cranky this morning? ;) :D
RoughCollie
Yes. Those who don't eat it get steamed broccoli. I make it only for Thanksgiving. I think the fried onions on top make the dish -- every year, I have just enough self control not to eat them before topping the casserole. MissKNG
Those who don't eat it get steamed broccoli. MMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love steamed broccoli!!!!:D
unsinkable
I never ate green beans until I married DH. I was a very picky eater as a child and even as my palate expanded greatly as I grew up and tried different things, there was something about the texture of green beans that gagged me into my 20s. Since green beans are one of the few vegs my DH enjoys, I kept trying them and now I've come to tolerate them. :D Now the casserole...not so much.
KRG
Yes, we eat it and like it here! You are not the first person that I have seen that seems to be revolted by the idea--seems that people either love it or hate it.
8circles
First the giblets now the green bean casserole!?!?! Is nothing sacred?;) No surprise I love it. My family makes it with cheddar cheese soup, ILs make it with cream of mushroom soup. What's not to love?
Mommyfaithe
My sil asked me this same question...only she makes it every year. She wanted to know if anyone really liked it...or was she making it because it was traditional.... I figure...who cares...everyone eats it...it's gone at the end of the dinner....so why change things. I would prefer steamed broccoli with cheese sauce....but, Green bean thing is fine.... Brigitte
It can be good in a weird sort of way. I make it, but with fresh or frozen green beans, a homemade sauce, etc.

momofkhm
I don't like it, but it's the onions that I don't like. I just try to get a scoop without a lot of onions and I'm fine. Love the rest of it.
black_midori
OMG, I love it!!! Make it every year. :) The one year I considered not making it, my brother actually asked about it special! Tigger
I don't like the way it looks, so it's never appealed to me - but some in our families apparently like it, they make it and it somehow gets eaten!
FairyMom
Well, I use fresh haricots verts in mine. :tongue_smilie:  Yum!!! Okay, I'll try it. It's interesting to see how people are attached to certain foods from childhood. My mom made fresh green beans with new potatoes, garlic and onions for Thanksgiving. I had frozen or fresh veggies growing up. My dh grew up on canned veggies and still loves the standard green bean casserole. :)
Lady Florida.
Scottish food, which is based on a dare. Does anyone eat it or is it some kind of inside media joke or what? To the bolded:  One year I invited a work friend who wasn't able to go home for Thanksgiving, and she brought it. None of us liked it, but apparently it was a "must" for her Thanksgiving menu. Carol in Cal.
When I was a kid, I loved it. As much as I loved ANY veggie. However, my contrasting alternatives were: overcooked frozen green peas or green beans, OR beat to death canned peas or canned green beans. With no 'doctoring up' with onion salt instead of regular salt, or herbs, or anything. But NOW, now that I know what veggies are supposed to taste like, if you start from good, new, fresh ones, now I don't like that casserole anymore. dangermom
My husband thinks it's just fine, but I feel :ack2:. There is nothing in the world worse than canned green beans, and nice fresh green beans are ruined by cream of mushroom soup. Luckily my family never cooks it, so I've only seen it once or twice in my life.
catz
I'm from MN, and I wouldn't touch the traditional version made with all canned goods. Canned green beans are just beyond eating IMHO. Yuck! If someone put a homemade panko topping on some fresh green beans, I'd be happy to eat that though! :D
arghmatey
Me me me! Growing up, I ate it every year and loved it. I haven't had it in a long time. dsmith
I love it, once in a while. OP- if your dh is referring to haggis, I can bet that if you had to choose between green bean casserole and haggis, you would eat the casserole quite happily. Haggis is gross, even paired with a few shots of Talisker, which I was told was the perfect drink for haggis. All the other food I had in Scotland was quite delicious.:001_smile:
RoughCollie
I use frozen French-cut green beans. Canned ... never heard of using those.
laundrycrisis
I only like it made with fresh ingredients - fresh beans, fresh mushrooms, fresh onions, bacon, a little creamy white sauce, all made from scratch, with a little worcestershire. That's good. I don't like the version with the canned beans and canned soup. Bleh.
Chocolate Rose
We've had it every year for both Thanksgiving and Christmas probably since I was in junior high (long, long, long ago). My mom made it one year and my bil LOVED it, so we have it every year. My mom has always subbed a can of dill green beans (I hate dill) for one of the regular green beans and then tops the whole thing with frozen onion rings instead of the dried canned stuff. The onion rings are the only thing I like.
Mothersweets
I loved it as a child but have never been able to make it as well as my mom did. I haven't made it the last few years as I've completely forgotten about it until we sit down at the table. oops. My kids were asking me to make it this year so I am giving it another go. I'll take a look at the Alton Brown link -thank you, Kristina! -so hopefully it will be edible this year. :)

luvnlattes
I love it...but then again I grew up with it. My mom will be bringing it over later today :D . My dh didn't grow up with it and he despises it.
