MEmama
Red breasted nuthatch! It’s no lost sea eagle, lol, but I do love how nuthatches climb down the trees. Such beautiful, gentle little birds.

ScoutTN
Mourning dove. When I was little, I heard their soft “coo-whoo” coming down the chimney (bc they loved to roost on it when there was not a fire) and thought I was hearing an owl.
EmilyGF
None so far, but DS16 got up super early to go birding this morning. He wants to be the first in county to post an ebird list this year. He might be out too long, though, since he's not back yet. Emily
Guest
You guys, it’s raining here and my bird feeder is empty so there aren’t any birds in my yard. I have put off letting my chickens out because I really don’t want my first BoTY to be a chicken… 1
I talk to the trees
Mourning dove, which is surprising, since the blue jays around here usually chase everyone else off!

Pawz4me
The first one I consciously noted was a hawk. Not sure what kind, but on the small side. ETA: I think likely either a Sharp Shinned hawk or a Cooper's hawk. Probably trying to get one of the birds at our feeder (sigh). Nature is messy. LifeLovePassion
A crow was the brave one today to be out in -13 degree temps. I think I'd have preferred a chicken, but alas, we don't own any. 2

Selkie
Mine is the same as always, house sparrows. Zoo Keeper
Chickadee-dee-dee-dee-dee for me. 🙂 I'm not counting the ones my oldest and youngest saw on the various bird cams they follow online. GoodGrief3
I went an entire day without seeing a bird! So odd! We took a four mile walk in a state park too. ktgrok
Never heard of this first bird of the year thing, but I am pretty sure the first one I saw/heard today was a mourning dove. Eos
Crows. My feeders used to be filled with chickadees and juncos this time of year. They're gone - I am assuming it's part of the song-bird die-off, which is deeply sad.
Hannah
We have lived in this house for nearly 20 years - its in a nature conservancy and very woody, so we see 100's of birds. Yesterday, for the first time we say a Woodland Kingfisher - about 150 miles South of where it should be. 4
