Looking for records of price changes over the last year

I am working on a project inspired by a comment I heard a you tuber make about price changes from last year. I know a lot of things have gone up and I have a set of items that I do remember specifically what I was paying for them regularly, but as we grow a lot, raise our own meat and generally don’t shop like the average American, I don’t have a lot of those prices that I can definitively say the amount they have changed. For example I can definitely say I bought tomato paste last year at Save a Lot for $.39 a can. Yesterday I bought it at $.79 a can. Also, last year at this time I was buying fresh white mushrooms for $.99 a package and I can still get them that price yesterday.

If you are at all interested in my project, I would love it if you can share what price changes you know. For example, the you tuber mentioned she had heard about a lady who went back to an online Walmart order from last year and saw what it cost and then reordered the exact same order and it had gone up from something like $300- $700 dollars, but she had no documentation.

I am interested specifically in food prices and their changes happening in the same area. I know food prices are different all over so I want to make sure I am analyzing data that compares apples to apples of you know what I mean 😉 So using my above example, I was comparing paste prices from the same store in the same town. But if I knew what the paste cost down in the city at Aldi then and now, that would also be helpful. I hope I am making my goal clear.

Anyway, thanks in advance!

The impetus behind the project is that the fed stated August food and drink was up 13.4% over last year while overall prices were up 8.3%, but I don’t know if it’s the stuff I’m buying or what but 13.4% does not feel accurate to me. I don’t have itemized lists if costs (should have kept up with The Tightwad Gazette price book) but I do know what our total monthly outgo is in the grocery department and it is more like 22%

I love this sort of data, too. I doubt I have any receipts to show this though, other than gas receipts, which I kept.

I do think it’s very uneven which things are much higher or even shockingly high. I stopped in a Shopper’s Food Warehouse (not a high end store) and planned to buy a quart of Chobani vanilla coffee creamer and it was over $6.00. That seems staggeringly high. I cannot remember exactly what I used to pay but I’m confident it started with a “3”. Might have been close to $4, but I’m certain it wasn’t over $4.

I was at a restaurant recently and asked what the market price was for crab cakes. I grant you, these are often the priciest item on the menu near the water where I live. I have paid between $26 and $32 for crab cakes before. I figured they would be more, so I said, “Do I dare ask what ‘market price ‘ is?” They were $58. 😄 Okay, let’s go with the chicken then…

Another thing that has really soared post-pandemic is alcohol. At a restaurant, there was no drink (besides beer) available for less than $10 a glass. And most were $15-$20.

Frozen meals used to be $2 and change and are now $3 and change

For us the big jump was from pre-pandemic to pandemic prices so from before 2020 March to when everything is in short supply or more expensive. Pre-pandemic, tree top apple juice was usually $2.49 but would go down to $1.99 when on sale, now it is usually $3.99 at the same store and never on sale. Eggs went up a lot from $1.29 per dozen to way high so we buy when there are eggs on sale. Chicken drumsticks went from $1.29/lb to $1.99/lb at the same store. Costco chicken thighs went from $0.99/lb to $1.49/lb. Vegetables and fruits at asian supermarkets did not go up by much or not at all. Rice went up a little but if you wait for sales, then you aren’t paying more.  We also shop what is on sale at grocery outlet if we need what is on sale, like horizon organic milk and tropicana orange juice is often cheaper there. Trader Joe’s kept their bananas at 19 cents each for non-organic.

@Quill alcohol didn’t really increase in price here at the supermarkets. Napa valley is nearby and even the imported sake and plum wine didn’t go up in price.

I, too, feel my food budget has gone up more than 15%. Small Carts (quick runs to the store) that used to be $20-$30 are now $40-$50 depending on what is in them.

Found an order from when I did curbside August 13, 2021, at our local HEB (Texas grocery chain).  Not all of these items are things I'd regularly buy, but I was using a meal planning service, and buying for those recipes then. Some items had "not available" today.

H-E-B Bakery French Bread Scratch Made, 16 oz; $1.55   (now – same)

H-E-B Select Ingredients Sweet Cream Liquid Coffee Creamer, 16 oz; $4.08 for 2; now $4.70 for 2

H-E-B Select Ingredients Gouda Cheese, Shredded, 8 oz; $2.86  (same)

H-E-B Delicatessen Foods Crumbled Goat Cheese, 4 oz; $3.89  (not available)

President Fat Free Feta Crumbled, 6 oz; $4.10  (not available)

H-E-B Baby Spinach & Spring Mix, 6 oz $5.72  (now $6.94)

H-E-B Organics Thyme, .66 oz; $2.66 (now $3.07)

Fresh Red Onion, Avg. 0.61 lb; $3.03 (qty 3)  $2.97 now

H-E-B Organics Texas Roots Sliced Baby Bella Mushrooms, 16 oz; $5.63  (now $7.15)

Fresh Russet Potatoes, 5 lb Bag; $2.34  (now $2.85)

H-E-B Pork Ribeye Chop Boneless Value Pack, Avg. 3.04 lbs; $12.80  (now $10.91)

Hill Country Fare Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts, Avg. 3.49 lbs;  $11.34  (now $12.53)

H-E-B Select Ingredients Reduced Sodium Chicken Broth, 32 oz; $1.83  (now $2.04)

Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix, 8.5 oz; $2.80  (not available)

H-E-B Black Beans, 27 oz; $5.28 (for 4)  (now $6.72 for 4)

H-E-B Select Ingredients Dijon Mustard, 12 oz; $0.95  (now $1.15)

Ken's Steak House Simply Vinaigrette Olive Oil Dressing, 16 oz; $2.04  (now $3.07)

H-E-B Roasted Salted Cashews, 6.25 oz; $5.43  (now $5.64)

H-E-B Select Ingredients Crisp N' Sweet Whole Kernel Corn, 15.25 oz; $1.60  (now $1.68)

Not huge changes. We have noticed scarcity much more than price increases here, honestly, although we've also noticed price increases as well. We just adjust our shopping accordingly on most things. I will say we're not actually buying a lot of the same things that we used to, either because the prices have changed, or they've become unavailable.

salmon 5.25 ounce  $4.99/$7.99 (Publix, so yes, decent quality, but this is a big increase)

Yes, this! Crisco Oil last year was around $3 and now it’s in the $6.50 range, and the size has decreased down to 40 ounces. My grocery store missed the size change and advertised the old size, which is of course not available.

I just ran down my Walmart receipt from 9/17/21---the closest one I have to today's date of 9/21/22. I just hit "reorder my last" to see current prices.

Only two items went down, 3# of clementines....they went from $1.51/lb to $1.33/lb (which is most likely a price match deal) and 1 lb of strawberries from 18.8c/oz to 18.6c/oz.

A few items stayed exactly the same: organic bananas at .68/lb, red bell pepper at $1.38 ea, cucumbers at .74/ea, roma tomatoes at .98/lb, and sugar snap peas at $2.78/8 oz.

Produce that went up:

sweet potatoes--1.18/1.38lb

Bartlett pears--1.26lb/1.66 lb (regional grower)

blueberries--18.5c/26.2c/oz

red seedless grapes--$1.58lb/1.68lb

gala apples 1.55lb/1.58lb (regional grower)

cilantro: 48c/88c

market avocado ranch chopped salad kit: 3.60/3.98

5# yellow potatoes: 3.77/4.68

doorbell rang, and I don't want to lose this...I'll post and then brb...

A few things that I either don't buy or rarely buy now due to price increases:

OJ, not in a can - $2.09, $3.50ish

2lb. Jimmy Dean sausage - $4.98, $7.58

I am actually still buying the sausage, but mostly just for my parents. They give us beef (my dad raises cattle) and groceries are so expensive where they are, especially now. So, I bought them sausage and bacon and would take a bunch down every visit. Now the price has gone up. I still buy it, because they would have to pay more. But, I won't give my mom a straight answer on the current price, because she would feel bad. Lol

My groceries prices aren't hugely more than they were several years ago, because we got an Aldi. If I had to shop at my old store for everything, it would be painful.

CBC Shrinkflation article from May, 2022

I hate Shrinkflation. I bought yogurt cups a few months ago and they were literally half filled. I also spotted som hummus at Walmart that had a “swirl” Of hummus in it that didn’t even cover all the bottom surface of the container. 😖

Look at Table 2. Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U): U.S. city average, by detailed expenditure category, August 2022
(Page 9 to 11 of 37)

https://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/cpi.pdf
“The food at home index rose 13.5 percent over the last 12 months, the largest 12-month increase since the period ending March 1979. The index for other food at home rose 16.7 percent and the index for cereals and bakery products increased 16.4 percent over the year. The remaining major grocery store food groups posted increases ranging from 9.4 percent (fruits and vegetables) to 16.2 percent (dairy and related products).
The index for food away from home rose 8.0 percent over the last year. The index for full service meals rose 9.0 percent over the last 12 months, and the index for limited service meals rose 7.2 percent over the last year.”

It is infuriating.  Particularly for products that come with a particular unit count per box.  Like DH's favourite ice-cream treat has been sold as four per box for as long as I can remember.  Now it's three per box, in packaging that looks identical  - same size, same graphic, only change is the number "3" instead of the number "4", in smallish print on the corner of the package .  If I weren't paying attention, I would have come home from the store short a dessert for one person in our family of four.

Most stores here display the unit price (in tiny print, but it's usually there) which helps.

Some random things I knew exact prices for...

Single AW root beer bottle 99c to $1.90

Friskies cat food box of 40 cans $18.94 to $27.98

Store brand bag frozen broccoli 88c to $1.29

Organic grass fed beef 1# $4.99 to $10.49

24 pack Coke $6.49 to $12.99

Organic whole carrots 1# 99c to $2.29

Silk almond coffee creamer $3.49 to $5.89

Store brand yellow mustard 69c to $2.09

Literally every item we buy or consider is up. The few hold-outs have finally jumped in the last two months.

Oatmeal and grits have gone from 12 packets to 8 or 10 depending on flavor, and the price per box is way up. Canned fruit and canned beans have doubled. Bacon and eggs and dairy were already high here and they haven't moved much.

Just in case it helps to know the region: Great Lakes.

Aug. 2021                                         Aug. 2022

Butter - 2.99 lb.                                 4.99lb

Shredded cheddar - 2.79 8oz.         3.99

Einkorn All purpose flour - 32.99 10lbs    39.99

Eggs. - large per dozen 1.99.          2.99 sometimes 3.99

Cream Cheese - $2.79 8 oz brick name brand     3.99 same brand

Crisco shortening was around $6 and is now $12.

Olive oil at costco was $17 at the beginning of covid (I stocked up then when covid was hitting Italy) and now it's $35.

Oh yeah, I used to be able to get the Tyson breaded chicken tenders for $5 on sale. They are on sale now for $9.

Milk was often $2.50- $3 on sale. It's been steady at $3.90 for at least a month.

I just checked some of mine in the Walmart app.  Walmart isn't my usual go-to for all my shopping (Aldi is my usual spot for most things), but I do shop there sometimes.  I know a lot of items have increased at Aldi, but I don't have any records of that.  This is in the upper Midwest:

Sept 2020/Now:

Mini Wheats cereal: 3.64/4.28

Puffs Facial Tissue 3pk: 4.68/9.90

Cliff Bars 12 pk: 9.67/13.72

Frozen Raspberries 12oz: 1.98/3.98

Frozen Blueberries: 2.47/2.58

8oz shredded cheddar: 2.22/2.22

Smuckers Creamy Natural PB 26 oz: 4.86/5.84

12 oz honey: 3.42/3.92

Can of seasoned black beans: .50/.78

32 oz frozen meatballs: 4.52/6.24

12 oz frozen broccoli: 1/0.98

Feb 2021/Now:

4 pk frozen breakfast sandwich: 3.28/5.78

Pecan Ice cream 2.97/2.24

Olive Oil: 4.76/5.50

Plain Yogurt 3.42/3.42

Sour cream 2.46/2.66

Flour 1.18/2.12

Eggs .75/2.02 (And I've often paid 2.99 in the past few months... 2.02 sounds good!)

Butter 1lb 2.98/4.48

I took a statistics class last spring and my group project was buying the same groceries one month apart to see if prices were changing. We did not see a difference over that one month period, but I still have the data from a couple of US locations and Germany. But my family moved this summer so I can’t go back to the same grocery store to buy those same items. Do you want our grocery prices from last year without current prices from those areas?

Tonight I saw the taller tub of Quaker oats is nearing $8. It used to be like $3-3.50, and generic a dollar or so less. Now generic is higher than original Quaker prices.

Quaker Oats is one of the items that tend to appear in Grocery Outlet stores. A lot of items that double in price from pre-pandemic tend to end up on Grocery Outlet shelves. For example, the excess stock for pepperidge farm cookies usually end up as $1.99 there which is what we paid pre-pandemic at Safeway when on sale ($2.49 was their usual). The regular items at Grocery Outlet are often more expensive than Safeway, Trader Joe’s, Costco. It is their “excess goods” like pasta sauce, tomato puree, last year’s Christmas chocolates and candies that are cheaper and many are not that near expiry date (e.g Jan 2023).

The store brand of pasta (Albertson's) was always $1.00 per pound (whatever shape).  This week it is $1.49 per pound.

I will have to search and see what records I can find for other specific price changes.  I know the largest price changes are the ones that stick in my head, so they are not necessarily a good measure.  Six months or so ago, meat prices seemed to skyrocket, now, especially if you buy the weekly special, that seems to have moderated and I can get decent deals.  Now, the things that seem to have increased rapidly are bread, canned goods, chips, and sodas.  I was surprised, however, that there was a huge display of Kraft Mac-N-Cheese for $1.00 a box; I think that is cheaper than it has been.  DH is usually oblivious to details, but he came home from the store this past week and said he was shocked to see some of the prices.

Since I shop a lot at Sam's Club I noticed the prices go up pretty dramatically. Some things as much as $10 more per box or case.  My coffee just in last six months has gone from $12.98 to 14.98   Strawberries are currently 8.98  Two bags shredded cheese was $5.98 now $7.37.   Pretty much everything is more expensive.

One big change was case of paper towels  sams brand was 14.98 and now 21.78  and toilet paper store brand was $12.98 and is now $ 18.98

The 5 dozen package of medium eggs at the cheapest store was 5.99 a year ago, and is 8.99 now—for which I am still grateful, because the same thing is 14.89 at the next cheapest store (there they were 8.49 a year ago).

Least expensive milk option was 2.59, now 3.19.

The cheap bread at the bakery outlet was 5 loaves for $4 pre-pandemic, 4 for $5 a year ago, and is 2 for $3 now.

Everything has risen, but the most basic staple items have risen the most, so that those who are on tighter budgets are likely to have seen greater rises in their costs.

These are the price increases of what I buy regularly from Adi:

Butter - $1.99/$3.69

Bacon - $2.69/$4.19

Eggs - $.99/$2.09

Chicken Breast - $1.69 lb./$2.69 lb.

Ranch Dressing - $1.99/$2.99

Cream Cheese - $.75/$1.69

Yep. Feels like soon we won't be getting our quarter back from the shopping cart either! I'm singin' the inflation blues...

Tonight I saw the taller tub of Quaker oats is nearing $8. It used to be like $3-3.50, and generic a dollar or so less. Now generic is higher than original Quaker prices.

I nearly had a heart attack buying oats a few weeks ago. I kept looking at the sign to see if it was wrong!

Pricing seems to be moving up more as a % in the canisters than in the 25# bags. I bought a 25# bag and a couple of food grade buckets instead. We easily go through 25# in winter. If you can find a restaurant store near you, it might be a more affordable option.

Over the past few months at my Sam's Club-- store brand coffee went from $8.**  to $12.**   Four boxes of store brand butter-- $12.** to 16.**   The 25 lb bag of store brand went up about $3.50.  The 5 lb bags of store brand shredded cheese also is about $3 to $4 dollars more. The same box of Nature Valley granola bars was $3.88 more.  Frozen chicken (10 lb bag) also had an increase of about $2 more per pound

While discussing some of these changes with one of the employees, she said that she paid $53 more for a repeat order.  $53 dollars more for same items 6 months later.  Crazy!

And at multiple stores, the Suave family size shampoo and conditioner bottles have gotten 8 oz. smaller, but the price has gone up.

I was thinking about this a few weeks ago when I went to grab the canned chicken at Sam's and it was 17.98!!!  I was sure it was around like $10 last year. So it made me dig some

The totals at the bottom are the cost for everything now vs then. It is over a 22% increase for the total. Hope this helps.
