Interesting!  Did you read a book about her?  I'd be interested in reading something about her.

There were a series of articles written about her- especially right after her death. There were huge arguments over her will, even her ashes. Half of her grandchildren were left out of her will.

My ultimate dream job would be to spend a year working with the tiniest orphaned baby elephants at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Kaluku Neonate Nursery in Kenya.

The last job I had before kids was pretty close to a dream job — I was head of publications for a large international nonprofit, and I could pick and choose which parts of which projects I wanted to work on myself and which I wanted to farm out, so I did some editing and a lot of graphic design as well as overall project management. Great benefits, plus international travel.

If I were actually forced to go back to work for some reason, I'd probably go for either graphic designer or preschool teacher. The worst thing about graphic design is clients who don't know anything about design and ask for tons of changes that make the project look super amateurish, and then they're like "well I could have done that myself." <head desk> The worst thing about being a preschool teacher is having kids pee/poop/puke on you — but the hugs and kisses and off-the-wall conversations make up for it.

BTS poet-laureate with a special focus on the ouvre of Min Yoongi.

Person who is hired to only give critical feedback on how schools are continuously failing.

Person hired to give 'life' to a historical home, just dress up in something, idk, muslin, and then walk around in the house or sit drinking tea, reading, writing, while visitors get to walk in the gardens.

provide therapeutic writing sessions in a variety of settings incl women's prisons

One of the team mums for one of my kids sports does something in gin. She gets to do trips to consult with Aboriginal reps around native bush food flavours at different seasons. It sounds like a pretty cool job.

Hospital chaplain (part-time)

Adjunct professor

I go back and forth on the above. I think what I would really like is to be independently wealthy (while we are dreaming, why not?). I like to have my hand in some things that can't really coexist, job-wise, and if I were independently wealthy, I could volunteer in a variety of areas without being consumed by any one.

If we’re talking dreams independently wealthy 🙂

Not necessarily cook and cleaner level wealthy, just wealthy enough to stay home with my kids, and have enough money to pursue whatever my academic interest of the moment is, and the kids to be able to do their things instead of scraping by. Homeschool mum has probably been the closest to fulfilling thing I’ve done although it’s sure had its moments!

My kid dream job was veterinary but I don’t think it’s truly for me. My hand-eye coordination is a bit average for surgery etc, and I don’t think I’d cope mentally with the sadness when things don’t work out for whatever reason. I also can’t handle washing my hands too much or wearing gloves or I end up with skin problems so anything in health care wouldn’t be great.

The closest to my current dream job would definitely be library related and I’d also love to study linguistics but not necessarily work in it long term.

One other idea I have floating around in my head is a kind of “bush kindy” style tutoring place where kids can come for literacy and math support but with a lot of outdoor activities with rocks, sticks, leaves and good story books! Basically tutoring that looks more like enhanced natural learning/homeschooling than a school style structured environment. I don’t think I have the capacity to carry something like that out though, my planning and ef skills are average.

I think those are called Forest Schools here.

I'd like to work for a charitable foundation and choose the most effective means to give/spend its money.

Actual possible future careers for me may include something more like nutrition educator or something in a low rung of emergency management.

One job that has always appealed to me is medical transporter…..the person who comes to get you in your hospital bed or wheelchair and brings you down for tests, x rays, transfers you to a new room or to the car to go home, etc.

I love the medical world (but don’t want to make the decisions of the medical provider) and love meeting people.  I would get paid to walk my entire shift, Interact with a lot of people, learn stuff, but if someone was a problem, I would only have them for a few minutes.   I would also like to think that I could be a calming force or encouragement for them in time of medical crisis.

I did this quite a bit as a volunteer in the ED and ICU, when I was trying to figure out if I wanted to go to nursing school. I don't know if you have the time/energy for volunteering at a hospital, but it was a wonderful experience for me. Just thinking out loud. ❤️

I would want to work in the Royal Archives. I'd basically like to be Lucy Worsely or Alison Weir.

I want to pore over 500-800 year old documents and find the reference to the making of someone's shoes. I want to spend my time in old Cathedrals.

Buy a huge piece of land some place beautiful, learn to garden, make wine, and open a no-kill shelter/sanctuary for animals of all sorts.

In my free time, I would write articles in the New Yorker and the Atlantic about food, wine, travel, and the issues of the day.

I would also moonlight as a SCOTUS justice, adjunct professor, and critical care physician, study Torah in Israel, and, during football season, give color commentary from the sidelines of USC games (a la Steel Magnolias).

We are dreaming here. Let's get that cleaning person in here every day on a livable wage. I don't think I'd want the services of a chef everyday but I'd want someone to determine a meal plan around my fun farmer's market trips and buy the rest of the groceries necessary for execution.  That and a resident gardener who would really maintain that beautiful edible cottage garden that my kids and I get to frolic in and do nature studies in.

I have only worked in pharmacy for 25 years do I don’t know much other than that. Genetics facinates me, so if anything, I might try to do something there. I loved the genetics counselor I worked with when I lost my daughter… so maybe a role like that??? Im so empathetic tho, it might be too hard for me.

I really liked the job I had before this one. I was a clinical pharmacy tech. This role allowed me freedoms right between a pharmacist and tech. I had way more authority than a regular tech, future advancement potential, and was always learning new skills. It was a great fit for my personality. I was always helping someone: providers, pharmacists, patients etc. I left for my current job which is 100% telework. I love the freedom of working from home, but dislike my job. It is soooooo boring, no advancement (clear to see who is earmarked for future roles) and micromanaged ( have to ask permission) for every tiny thing. I will stay for the freedom but dread working most days. 🙁

Right now I just want to be a stay at home mom. This is probably dumb because I am literally at the height of my career both as a national speaker and author in my field as well as in my job.

But I just want to be home with my kids for the next 8 years. I can’t get DH on board with it though.

It isn't dumb, and it isn't discontent. You've had a rough go of any kind of work/life balance. I hope it gets better!

Not sure how I'd answer the question, but related to it, I just read this quote from Thoreau a few days ago that may encourage others as they dream about how to best "make a living" for the rest of life:

"It is remarkable that there is little or nothing to be remembered written on the subject of getting a living: how to make getting a living not merely honest and honorable, but altogether inviting and glorious; for if getting a living is not so, then living is not. "

- from "Life Without Principle" (my italics)

Wishing all of us work that will be honest, honorable, inviting, and glorious.

This was going to have been my encore career to homeschooling.  I had started taking classes and exploring certifications, etc, then found out a friend was about to open one within a few miles of my house, so oh well!

It might be able to happen soon. It’s convincing DH that’s the trick lol.

I’d also really like to be a Disney and Universal travel agent.  I score great deals for my family and friends and love helping them plan their trips, so I think I’d be good at it.

Could you do the latter as a SAHM?

Beach chair tester, with a side job testing sunscreens and beachwear. On a beach.

Taste tester at a test kitchen; my constant refrain would be, “Too much salt!”

Movie/book critic. Preferably at a publication where I could submit either a well thought out critique, or a pithy statement such as, “Well, that sucked,” depending on my mood, and the editors would be happy either way.

I totally understand this.  I have about a decade left before I'll (probably?) be a true empty-nester.  I'd like to finish this leg of parenting with the presence of mind I had when I was a SAHHM.  The downside is I'd lose what little momentum I've built up after returning to the workforce full time almost 5 years ago.  Then again, by that time, I'd possibly be "too old" to go work anyway, so the point would likely be moot.

My planning skills rock, just saying, at this kind of thing which is exactly the kind of idea I have floating around in my head every school day! Let me know when I start 🙂

I love what I do and I can't imagine doing anything else. But if I had the choice to do anything I would honestly want to stay home with my kids and be a stay at home mom. I love homeschooling and taking care of my kids and home and I wish I had more time to so.

I will say, as some above have said, that I loved homeschooling my kids and being a SAHM. That was my dream job, minus a few days and a few seasons with one or another of the kids. However, they are all grown now, and I waffle between being very happy being at home and also having the flexibility to travel to see my grandkids or keep them when needed (new baby, parents traveling, etc.), and needing a job because we could definitely use the financial cushion. And sometimes I get a little bored. Not often, though.

My dream job from the time I was a tiny kid was to have my own animal sanctuary, and I’ve lived that dream for the past 33 years. At last count, we’ve had upwards of 50 rescue dogs, plus many horses, cats, and assorted other creatures in need of a home. It has been years of hard labor and long hours (dh and I haven’t been on vacation in many years), but it is a wonderful way to use my life.

To pay the bills for the above, I also had another, not-so-dreamy job as a business owner for 30 years.

Public Medievalist 😏

What that would entail is: researching in the archives, traveling in Europe to medieval sites, learning many medieval languages, giving public lectures, having money to buy all the books, having a YouTube channel, writing history books for non-specialists.
