Corraleno
My ultimate dream job would be to spend a year working with the tiniest orphaned baby elephants at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Kaluku Neonate Nursery in Kenya. The last job I had before kids was pretty close to a dream job — I was head of publications for a large international nonprofit, and I could pick and choose which parts of which projects I wanted to work on myself and which I wanted to farm out, so I did some editing and a lot of graphic design as well as overall project management. Great benefits, plus international travel. If I were actually forced to go back to work for some reason, I'd probably go for either graphic designer or preschool teacher. The worst thing about graphic design is clients who don't know anything about design and ask for tons of changes that make the project look super amateurish, and then they're like "well I could have done that myself." <head desk> The worst thing about being a preschool teacher is having kids pee/poop/puke on you — but the hugs and kisses and off-the-wall conversations make up for it.

Jaybee
Hospital chaplain (part-time) Adjunct professor I go back and forth on the above. I think what I would really like is to be independently wealthy (while we are dreaming, why not?). I like to have my hand in some things that can't really coexist, job-wise, and if I were independently wealthy, I could volunteer in a variety of areas without being consumed by any one.
Ausmumof3
If we’re talking dreams independently wealthy 🙂 Not necessarily cook and cleaner level wealthy, just wealthy enough to stay home with my kids, and have enough money to pursue whatever my academic interest of the moment is, and the kids to be able to do their things instead of scraping by. Homeschool mum has probably been the closest to fulfilling thing I’ve done although it’s sure had its moments! My kid dream job was veterinary but I don’t think it’s truly for me. My hand-eye coordination is a bit average for surgery etc, and I don’t think I’d cope mentally with the sadness when things don’t work out for whatever reason. I also can’t handle washing my hands too much or wearing gloves or I end up with skin problems so anything in health care wouldn’t be great. The closest to my current dream job would definitely be library related and I’d also love to study linguistics but not necessarily work in it long term. One other idea I have floating around in my head is a kind of “bush kindy” style tutoring place where kids can come for literacy and math support but with a lot of outdoor activities with rocks, sticks, leaves and good story books! Basically tutoring that looks more like enhanced natural learning/homeschooling than a school style structured environment. I don’t think I have the capacity to carry something like that out though, my planning and ef skills are average.

Tap
I have only worked in pharmacy for 25 years do I don’t know much other than that. Genetics facinates me, so if anything, I might try to do something there. I loved the genetics counselor I worked with when I lost my daughter… so maybe a role like that??? Im so empathetic tho, it might be too hard for me. I really liked the job I had before this one. I was a clinical pharmacy tech. This role allowed me freedoms right between a pharmacist and tech. I had way more authority than a regular tech, future advancement potential, and was always learning new skills. It was a great fit for my personality. I was always helping someone: providers, pharmacists, patients etc. I left for my current job which is 100% telework. I love the freedom of working from home, but dislike my job. It is soooooo boring, no advancement (clear to see who is earmarked for future roles) and micromanaged ( have to ask permission) for every tiny thing. I will stay for the freedom but dread working most days. 🙁 Edited June 30, 2023 by Tap

I have about a decade left before I'll (probably?) be a true empty-nester. I'd like to finish this leg of parenting with the presence of mind I had when I was a SAHHM. The downside is I'd lose what little momentum I've built up after returning to the workforce full time almost 5 years ago. Then again, by that time, I'd possibly be "too old" to go work anyway, so the point would likely be moot.

That was my dream job, minus a few days and a few seasons with one or another of the kids. However, they are all grown now, and I waffle between being very happy being at home and also having the flexibility to travel to see my grandkids or keep them when needed (new baby, parents traveling, etc.), and needing a job because we could definitely use the financial cushion. And sometimes I get a little bored. Not often, though.

It has been years of hard labor and long hours (dh and I haven’t been on vacation in many years), but it is a wonderful way to use my life.
