Your college major

If you went to college, what was your major? I changed my major 4 times. I was Early Education - Montessori when I last attended school. I didn't graduate though. I'm rather bummed about that. But I think the diversity of our board is pretty cool. You can answer even if you didn't graduate. I did. :tongue_smilie:

I started as a Biology major and switched to Math. I was going to do teacher certification, but the classes were so boring I dropped it and took as many business classes as I could. Once I finally had a chance to actually teach in a classroom (15 years ago), I wished so much I had stuck it out through the certification classes. I am still getting to teach, but if I want to do it later full-time, it may mean going back to school.

I have a B.S. in Business Administration and an M.B.A. with a dual concentration in Finance and Organizational Development.

My real interest was psychology but someone talked me out of it at the time, and steered me towards business. I'm now contemplating going back to school for a second Master's degree in a psychology-related field. :)

Started in Computer Science, but switched sophomore year. Ended with majors in Physics and Psychology - and a minor in Math. I enjoyed it. If I could go back I'd be checking into Neuroscience or Brain and Cognitive science - just because that field is incredibly intriguing to me.

Started off as a Biology major, and switched to what my school called "Psychobiology" back then. (They have thankfully changed the name of that degree to "Neuroscience" , so that is what I tell strangers who ask what degree I have. Telling people I was a Psycho-biology major always brought strange looks, LOL). Decided I didn't want to spend my life dissecting rat brains and got my M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology.

Ha - I was pre-engineering, then pre-architecture. I ended up with a BS in Math and a BS in comp science from a competitive big 10 college of science and engineering. So they were tech heavy degrees. I wish I would have taken more humanities actually!

Started in music composition, but gave back the scholarship after one year. Completed a B.A. in the history of science during the medieval and Renaissance periods. Finished 2/3 of a M.A. in Russian language and linguistics. Completed an M.L.I.S. (library and information science). It was a good mix for marketability, allowing me to have some wonderful jobs along the way to "retirement" as a homeschool teacher. Among the jumble of jobs, I have served as copy editor for the English translation of a Soviet chemical engineering journal, head of the serials department at a college, manager of a telecommunications marketing research library, and ended as a competitive analyst in telecommunications. Loved it all!

I started in Landscape Architecture, but switched to Horticulture with an emphasis in residential design.

I'm so glad you posted this! Can you please tell me what the difference is between the two? My daughter was talking about this just the other day and is considering something like that as a line of work.

What about Industrial and Organizational Psychology? Seems like a natural extension for the degrees you already have. Just a thought (that I'm sure you've probably already had yourself!).

I started off as a Sociology major. I wanted to be a grief counselor at hospital. Then I briefly changed to accounting, then Elementary Ed/Early Childhood with emphasis in Reading and finally ended up getting a degree in English and History.

My first bachelors is in Technical Theatre.( got that degree when I was 20) I worked for quite a few years as an union stage manager, and lighting designer in theatre and also spent 5 years in Hollywood working behind the scenes in movies. Went back to Texas, met dh, moved to NJ , worked as technical supervisor in a casino . THen in my early 30's went back to school and got my BS in geology, worked in that field until I was 42 and we adopted our first. Quit to stay home and that is where I still am, homeschooling.

I changed my major so much. I started out as a BA in Psychology, then changed it to Marketing and Communications, then I went for Dental Assisting and I actually did get two certifications for Dental Assisting in the midst of that... then recently I went back for my BA in Psychology. I didn't finish, though. I have about a year left and will probably finish one day but I just didn't see adding onto my student loan debt if I planned to stay at home with the kiddos throughout high school. If I end up needing to work, I would probably go back to the dental field. I am also nursing my new business. It is still in it's baby stages where I celebrate a client calling me ;)

Short answer: Started out Math/Computer Science, switched to Secondary Education/Math and ended up with a B.S. in Math.

Started out Math/Computer Science - by default. I wanted to major in Special Ed, but my dad talked me out of it since jobs at that time were hard to come by and didn't pay well. I wasn't doing very well in the Computer Science department, which was a very theoretical program. I always felt like I walked in half-way through the semester in a school where everyone else seemed to have built computers in their basements from toddlerhood. Switched to Math/Secondary Education, but a combination of things, plus my experience observing in schools made me rethink becoming a teacher. I didn't want to work with the people I observed, nor did I want to become one of them. So, I switched to Math, got my B.S. and a job as a computer analyst. As it turns out, I would have done better at a computer science program that had an emphasis on business information systems rather than theoretical computer science. I was not cut out to be a software engineer.

I've been out of the field for 17 years and don't have a hope in he## of getting a job in that field again (women over 50 are not highly sought out candidates,) so I am in a quandry trying to figure out what I want to do in the next chapter of my life. I would love a teaching or mentoring type of job, but definitely not in a school system. As an introvert, large numbers of kids would have me hitting the bottle every night:). I would love to be a physical therapist, but starting from scratch and getting a doctorate is not something I really want to (nor do we have the finances for it. )
