BearWallowSchool
Can Harley be both a girls name and a boys name? I say both and DH says only boy. Do you automatically think of motorcycles? Would it be assumed that parents of this child are motorcycle nuts? We do not own a motorcycle. Would this be okay? :D P.S. Are last name is not any form of Davidson.
Granny_Weatherwax
Sounds like a boy name to me and, yes, I immediately thought of motorcyles.

GoVanGogh
I have never met a male Harley, but know two young girls ( >12 years of age) named Harley. I do automatically think of the motorcycle, though not in a negative way. I do like the name, but have wondered how it "transfers" to the adult/professional stage. tearose
I had an immediate motorcycle association, too, and I'd probably think that the parents were into motorcycles.

Stacia
Name for both boys & girls. No, I didn't automatically assume 'motorcycles'.
nukeswife
I think boy not girl, and growing up near Milwaukee WI, yes I automatically thought of motorcycles.
Happy
Boy name. I've known a male Harley. Nice guy. I've known more labrador retrievers named Harley than I have men or women.
Chris in VA
I've only heard it as a dog's name. And that was a male dog. Maybe it's a regional thing? I've heard of Hailey, or Haley for a boy. (THat one is more girly, I think) Would that do?
BearWallowSchool
I do like the name, but have wondered how it "transfers" to the adult/professional stage. I hadn't even thought about this. You guys aren't helping! I liked it.
Sue G in PA
There was a girl named Harley on the soap opera I watched as a teen. I really like that name for a girl. My dd14's best friend from a few years back had a little brother named Harley. So...both!
eternalknot
First few times I heard it, I automatically assumed BOY name; however, we've known 3 Harleys and they've all been girls. I say it could be both, but I'd probably use it only for a girl at this point given the crowd we run with. I wouldn't assume the parents were bike nuts, but it'd cross my mind the first time I heard the child's name LOL. I wouldn't ask or anything, but I may fish for that information :D! golfcartmama
I know a little girl with that name! Although, they do spell it Harleigh...
gingersmom
My neighbor's adult son had a german shepherd named Harley. For years, every evening we had to listen to her yell HARLEY HARLEY (she actually left off the R and it was more like HA LEY!!!!)
Chris in VA
'Course, if you kept the same spelling, she could always say "My name is Harley, like the motorcycle!" and everyone would know how to spell it correctly!
Liz CA
I definitely see "Harley" as a boy name. If you are looking for something similar for a girl, I would think "Hailey" comes close - and no association with motorcycles there.
Ellie
First reaction: I wouldn't choose it for a child. Ever. Sorry. But if that's what you decide, I won't say a word about it.:) Second reaction: Boy's name, not that I would name a boy "Harley" Third reaction: Motorcycle. Trivia: There's an actress named Harley Jane...something or other. She was in "Parenthood," and she played Richard Dean Anderson's wife on Stargate SG-1. nmoira
I say boy only. I don't see how it works as a girl name at all, myself.Kevin Smith's daughter is named Harley Quinn. I don't know any male Harleys under 20, and suspect it's yet another name usurped by girls. Pretty soon there will be no "boy" names left. Julie in CA
I'm only telling you this 'cause you asked! :D The name Harley really does scream "redneck", imo. On the other hand, I completely support the rights of a parent to name their child after a motorcycle if they so desire. ;)
PinkInTheBlue
Sounds like both to me and I immediately thought of motorcycles even though motorcycles aren't even in my life.

MrsBasil
I thought of a motorcycle and then the comic book character Harley Quinn, who is a female. I would think boys name only if it weren't for the comic character.

BearWallowSchool
I liked it for a girl. I was thinking Harley Ann (my mn). Boy name has already been chosen. Since some of you know female Harley's I will keep it on the list.
milovany
What do you think of Harlow instead? I know it's a star-baby name, but when I heard it after [said star][can't think of her name right now, Nicole Richie?] used it, I really liked it. My dh would never go for it. sewingmama
If I HAD to use it I would only use it on a boy -but I don't like it for either sex. Yes I associate it with motorcycles and think that the parents or at least the dad is a fan. In Australia at least I also associate the name with "bogan" - because only bogan parents name their kids Harley.:D

ChristusG
I love the name Harley! Of course I think of the motorcycle, but that's not all I think of....and I wouldn't necessarily think the parents love motorcycles. I know three Harley's. One is a man about 25 years old. One is a little girl around 7 years old. And one is my FIL's dog.

JFSinIL
My first thought was indeed motorcycle...and how it would make a cool guy name. I might be more inclined towards Haley for a girl.
sassenach
Our Laborador is named Harley. My husband is a Harley rider. So it makes me think of motorcycles and 80lb black dogs. The only Harley I have ever met was a girl. I don't like it as a boy's name.
Julie in CA
We are from Kentucky so the community won't mind! Glad you weren't offended! :D At the same time though, it's possible that the baby with the cute redneck name might find it a bit of an impediment if they should decide on a different life later on, kwim? Just as an example, I find it extremely unlikely that we'll ever see a president with the first name of "Bubba" either!

Dawn in OH
I think it's fine for a boy or a girl. I've never actually met anyone named Harley, but I do like it. I never ever thought of it as a "redneck" name until someone mentioned it here, but now that I read that, it's kind of stuck in my head for the time being. I'm sure that will wear off.
