  1. My kids are in college and they buy all used and when they resell, the don't get ripped near as badly as with homeschool used curriculum. I know some of you understand and feel my pain, but truly, accepting the whole idea behind spending say $120 on a set of books, using them once and then not being able to get $60 for perfect condition is demoralizing and just chock full of limiting beliefs IMO. I felt repressed by this whole concept all 14 years homeschooling and just really glad to not be bound by this anymore. I apologize if I have been insulting....but I'm glad to have moved on to a different tribe and a different mindset in life.
  2. The set I bought from MFW: http://www.mfwbooks.com/item/50084/Physics-Complete/ The price of the Microchem kit I bought new and I also bought the Apologia Chem set new from MFW: http://www.qualitysciencelabs.com/chemistry-labs/microchem-kit-standard-edition/ Maybe there is a glut of these items out there, maybe a lot of people just aren't hitting this high in school---but for whatever reasons it doesn't matter because it drives me batty. I price my curriculum well within reselling limits, as I homeschooled and bought and sold stuff for 14 years. There has been a change though---could be just more homeschoolers, more slick advertising from companies manipulating people to buy new---2ND EDITION, 3RD EDITION or a new shiny cover---when everything else is the same.
  3. http://logosscience.com/physicskit.html Current price is $274.
  4. No, the physics stuff is all nonconsumable. And yes, it will cost a fortune to mail but I was trying to be as generous as possible, which I why I decided to come here and vent.
  5. OK---so comment on this: I have an almost brand new set of Apologia Physics---my son didn't even use the test pack. So whole, complete set. I also have a Logos Physics experiment kit I paid $240 ----I have the entire set priced at $120 INCLUDING shipping. So does this sound like too much? It stresses me out even asking....
  6. My point......exactly! Sold by a used book seller on Amazon---not a homeschool family trying to recoup a few hard earned dollars to buy the next years books. And guess what---I bet YOU will go and resell these same books on Amazon for the same $5 or even ask up to $10---am I right?? I know I am.
  7. Lol---pricing my used once curriculum at less than 50% what I paid new is practically giving it away in my eyes. But yes, I am literally going to box the stuff up and give it to the charity out of Oklahoma that helps needy families. Even locally, the cheapness of the mom's I have tried to sell to makes me cringe.
  8. I find it so irritating when I try to sell my used curriculum what absolute nitpicking cheapskates people are!!! I buy the stuff brand new, use it once and the used buyers want it for more than 50% off what I paid for it or they turn up their noses, or tell me the stuff is a bit dated etc. Really?! Why not have some dignity and just cough up a few dollars to educate your kids?? It's what I did, and we were one income and struggling in those days, especially once the kids got to high school. But I was determined to give them the best. I think I'll just donate all of my Apologia and other name brand, popular stuff because trying to sell to cheap, nitpickers has me flat out pissed. This is the #1 reason I am SOO glad to be done homeschooling---the complete waste of money on buying new curriculum, and then the complete waste of my time and mental energy trying to resell to cheapskates!

  10. Sonlight, once again. Evergreen A Guide to Writing with Readings by Susan Fawcett Open Door to Spanish by Margarita Madrigal
  11. I like the Conceptual Physics idea. My son did Apologia Bio in 9th, and I wish we would have waited. I spend oodles of $$$ on Conceptual Physics for 12th and we ARE going to use it---but frankly I see it as a great course for 9th and WAY too easy for 12th! He knows a lot of this stuff...well, actually most. But Apologia Physics is a joy-sucker for ds, so I did get the Problem Solving wb. You could do Conceptual Physics and then perhaps add a couple of the Tiner books with study guides from Memoria Press to supplement a couple of additional topics, like Chemistry.
  12. We used IEW for years with mixed reviews/results. It got quite tedious after a couple of years. While browsing at Amazon I found a book called Evergreen by Susan Fawcett and it has been THE book that has resonated and motivated my son more than anything else!!! He truly loves it---and he NEVER, EVER says that about any curriculum. It's actually a book meant for community college, but it walks the student step by step through paragraphs and then the 5 paragraph essay, with exercises to practice right in the book. It's actually exactly what I have been looking for ALL these years---which the homeschool market could never fulfill for me. The homeschool products for the high school level has just been so....juvenile...for my son. This speaks to young adults that are obviously more mature. That said, he will be finished with this book mid year, so I did go ahead and get IEW Advanced Writing program, as it sounds like there are some good topics addressing writing college level papers and taking notes effectively. We LOVED the High School Essay Intensive.
  13. This topic has been HUGE with our teen son!!! His sister would get up at 7 and power through her work and be done no later than noon most days. The Boy has consistently fiddled his way through a 6 hour school day in no less than 7-8 hours every.single.year of high school so far. Until I finally just lost it one day----I was just finally fed up with his dawdling and then complaining that I assign too much work. So this is what I did and it's been a miracle at motivating him to manage his time and get his work done: He MUST be up and ready to work on school by 8 am, I assigned 3 2-hour blocks of time for his subjects. Anything not done in the 6 hour time frame is now considered 'homework' and he must cut his afternoon of skateboarding and socializing short to come home and do this 'homework'. NOT ONCE has he had to come home early so far in the last 2 weeks---so I found the formula that works with The Boy. If he could find employment in this town, we would require him to have an afternoon job, especially since he now finishes before 1pm everyday!

  15. I thought the RWT for Apologia Biology was great!! I loved the extra explanations and added, interesting content. My son did NOT have the patience to sit, listen and take notes for 30 minutes twice a week unfortunately. The alternate tests are great too.
