  1. HI! Just posting on here on the off chance that anyone is in the Carmel/Westfield/Noblesville area? We just moved here from MA and I am trying to find some homeschool friends!! Drop me a line or post here, thanks!
  2. :grouphug::grouphug: So glad you are OK! What a terrifying experience. You are so lucky, and it is amazing that you didn't have water in the house. Try to keep warm tonight. :grouphug::grouphug: And I am sorry about the books. I know, it could've been much worse. But did it have to be the books?! :glare::) Take care, check in when you can. :grouphug:
  3. Yes, you can add it on top of your regular math. We use MM as our "spine" and then supplement with LOF and BA. We use MM almost every day, occasionally take a day off here and there, and supplement probably 3-4 days a week. I don't have a specific schedule with it, we just add it in as we have the time or desire. My son would do LoF and BA all day if he could. ;) It is our cuddly couch time in the evenings and it doesn't really seem like it is part of our school day, iykwim. Fred would also be a good bedtime story kind of book. Miquon is also easy to fit in, and you can match up what you are working on in MM with Miquon lessons. The amount of time you spend on it is really up to you and what you need to work on with your child. We skip a lot of problems in MM or sometimes topics if they have already been covered with the other things we are doing. I am also a fan of doing math in the summer, so I don't worry about finishing in May or June. I feel like I would need to do a ton of review in the fall if we didn't keep up with things over the break, so we do a more laid back but still regular math schedule in the summer. Really, at that level, it should be easy to add in the "fun math" and not add tons of time to your day. After a bit you will find a good balance with it. You may find that you won't need to do as much of the regular math after adding in Miquon and LoF. HTH!
  4. I didn't really have an opinion one way or the other on this topic earlier today. But I was just treated to a fabulous performance by some teen boys tonight during ToT. They were dressed as Christmas carolers, full on furry hats, beards, tartan plaid, and all. :) They walked up and with British accents said, "Good tidings" and "Season's Greetings". And then they opened up their book and sang a Christmas carol  They started out totally off tune not together (on purpose) and then finished together in perfect harmony. It was actually beautiful. Anyway, I appreciated the humor in it (yeh, I know I have a weird sense of humor). They were obviously performers at the high school, they were spot on with their singing and acting. As they were walking away they were sending holiday wishes to the other ToTers. I love a little creativity! BTW, it isn't even 7pm here yet and we have had 152 ToTers (approx) :001_huh:
  5. :grouphug::grouphug: It is really hard to think about it all. You do what you need to do to cope. We'll miss you. :grouphug::grouphug:
  6. Hmmmm...that is kinda like asking which child is my favorite.....:tongue_smilie:
  7. Just last week I told my DH that I would love a pair of the really good Bose noise canceling headphones. The worst time for me is in the car, I like to read and my DH will listen to music and whistle. I can block out any other noise, like kids fighting and baby cries and trains and traffic, etc...but the whistling/humming stuff just gets me. Sometimes I'll wear earplugs and it will help a little bit. I couldn't wear headphones all day of course, but really my kids don't make too many of the offensive noises. It is crazy how their LOUD chaos all day doesn't bother me, but a harmless little soft whistle sends me to crazy town.
  8. Yes! Humming and especially whistling really bother me. I wish they didn't. My DH does it all the time, and it is just an involuntary thing with him, but it really makes me uncomfortable. I feel like I need medication or something. I have to ask him to be quiet, which I feel is sort of sad, he is making a happy noise, ya know? But I can't help it. I don't need total quiet, but I just can't stand those kind of noises.
  9. My son is a lego fanatic, but also loves Kapla blocks. There's also Citiblocs which are pretty much the same thing and are easier to find/cheaper. He plays with these for hours (well, in between the legos....). He also has: Magformers Tinker Toys Zoob K'Nex I think any of them would be a perfect gift. :)
  10. Definitely try to go to some library sales. Just in the past 2 months I have gone to 4, maybe 5? in the surrounding towns. Most of our libraries have them several times a year, some of them have them once a month, and I always walk out with a huge bag. They are cheap, cheap, cheap. Most books are 25 cents or 50 cents, and the library in our town just asks for a donation. There are always TONS of children's books and lots of things that are currently popular like those you mentioned. I would still use the library. I don't think it is that hard to get things back in time, just find a system that works. I track them all online, and can renew online as well. We have a huge basket near the front door where we keep library books that aren't in use and I can usually grab and go. There are so many awesome books that I know we will only read once, and I can't afford to buy books like that. We also have an amazing ILL system, so I can get almost any book I need. For used (and new) books, I would shop at amazon or abebooks. Also, join paperback swap if you haven't already. :)
  11. This is why I buy stuff that I do not like or will not eat. :tongue_smilie: I bought the huge bag of Dum Dum pops because it was the most economical way to buy a large amount. We have HUNDREDS of trick or treaters. :glare: I can't afford to get them fancy candy. I'll happily steal a few things from my kids tomorrow night. Apparently we have some rich neighbors-last year the kids got 3 or 4 FULL SIZE candy bars. :001_huh:
  12. Worth a try!! Yes, since the shipping is so low, I am tempted to just get the DVDs. I have held off so many times because the shipping was outrageous. But now I am wondering...is there very much too see...visual aids and the like? Many people listen to the audio, so I was just wondering. I do like the idea of downloading on the iPad...I need to be more decisive. Is there a course on that?? :tongue_smilie:
  13.:lol: That is funny! I think you "win".:lol:
  14. :iagree: He probably didn't think twice about it. I would be mortified, too. The b00kshelves often don't come out until the afternoon. The UPS guy comes pretty much daily to our house and I feel like a slacker every time one of my kids answers the door in PJs.
