I cannot believe I'm listing my second child's high school plans... Where is the time going?! Ana will be a senior and Christian a freshman!

Math - Foerster's Algebra I with Math without Borders

Science - Shepherd Science Biology

English ~ Rod & Staff Grammar 7

Composition - Undecided but something combined with WWS 2 simply because he had a really good attitude about WWS 1 and it's practically self-teaching at this age, so we use it in combo with me teaching another IEW course.

Windows to the World

My Father's World - Ancients (Lit, Bible, & History)

I'd really like him to take the Robotics course through Landry, but we'll see. I think it is something he'd really enjoy.

Biology - Science Shepherd

Geometry-Jacobs 2nd edition supplemented with Geometry by Jurgensen and Brown

Latin-finished Henle 2, started Latin readings with Eutropius (We are using War with Hannibal)

English-Writing With Skill 2 (I thought we would have time for more than this, but we haven't)

Literature (1/2 credit) classics, reading and some writing about them

Logic - Socratic Logic

History - A History of the American People-local class, but the same text and plan that I used with my older kids.

It has been a good year.

Just 5 more weeks!!!!

Geometry: Discovering Geometry, Serra (the course is fine, but I would pick a different one if I had it to do over again)

Conceptual Physics, Hewitt using Hewitt manuals and supplies, adding in GPB videos

Trisms' Expansion of Civilization: This includes history (we used SWB's book and A Short History of the World as spines with countless other resources), philosophy, economics, art and music history, architecture, literature, language arts using IEW, geography, rhetoric, and some scientific history.

We also used the sentence diagramming book listed in my siggie, finished How to Read a Book, and are still working on A Workbook for Arguments.

We're planning a 9th grade curriculum for DS next year and it's great to see all the different approaches folks are using. This will be our first year not using a packaged curriculum.

Our current thoughts are:

AoPS Algebra 1

Derek Owens Conceptual Physics

Possibly a self designed Literature program focused on reading and writing (My wife is a very good at writing and will be a big help here)

Maybe AP US History and AP US Government since there is a lot of overlap there

He plays rec sports and has private music lessons which include music theory

This spring he took 3 college electives thru Coursera and enjoyed them, I assume he will want to do more of those in the fall

If you have ideas on this I'd love to hear them.

Thanks

A variety of out of the home electives including: Fencing (1.0 credits), Maya Computer Graphics (0.5 credits), Beauty & the Beast Musical Theatre (0.5 credits), and Newspaper Team (0.25 credits). These were all taken at a homeschooling resource center.

I might have posted our 9th grade plans in another thread, but I may have made some changes since then. I included what my dd did her freshman year, too.

DD-

English at Co-OP

World Geography

Earth Science

Algebra I

Beginning Painting

Spanish I Ă¢â‚¬â€œused Rosetta Stone, but had dd repeat when she went to public school in 10th

PE-Softball

World Literature-HO Ancients L3

DS-

Algebra I Ă¢â‚¬â€œLialĂ¢â‚¬â„¢s or Prentice Hall- Still undecided

Honors English I- EIL Intro to Lit; LLTLOTR; Analytical Grammar; VFCR C; WWS 2

Honors Biology- Miller Levine; Lab class

World Geography- OM World Geography; Maps for Geographic Literacy

PE/Health- OM Integrated PE/Health

Art-OM Drawing & Design

Photography- OM Photography (1 semester)

Creative Writing- Video Game Narrative Writing (1 semester)

Video Game Theory & Design- MIT OpenCourseware (1 semester)

WeĂ¢â‚¬â„¢ve decided to bypass the foreign language for ds because IĂ¢â‚¬â„¢d rather spend the time doing something more relevant to his goals. If he needs to take it for college he can do it there, but since he will most likely be starting college at the CC first or going to a private Art school he doesnĂ¢â‚¬â„¢t need it for high school. However, we will be doing Latin over the summer and trying the NLE in the spring.

I'm still planning, but I feel better than Tiger isn't the only one taking Algebra I next year. (We started hs late, and ps had accomodated his LDs so much that we started MUS Alpha in 7th grade and went from there. We're in Pre-Algebra right now.)

Math - MUS Algebra I

Writing - IEW SICC-B

Grammar - Fix It

Latin - LP 2

History - Ancient World - The spine will be SWB's book.

Literature - So many choices; I must narrow them down.

Science - Earth science - I'm still trying to decide on a curriculum.

I'm going to try to fit a programming course (courtesy of my sister) into the first semester, and return to Logic in the second semester.

I'm sure Tiger will do theater again, but that might be his only extra-curricular pursuit.

These are the courses DS chose for 9th (next year):

Greek 3 (Lukeion)

Latin 2 (Lukeion)

Turkish 1 & 2 (finish 1, start 2)

American History (several TTC courses plus assorted readings & primary sources)

American Art (.5 credit; TTC course + readings, museums, etc.)

English Language & Composition (mix of English linguistics, American nonfiction, & intensive writing)

Algebra II (Thinkwell)

Astronomy (several TTC courses + college text + labs/observations)

Programming (.5 credit, self-directed)

Linguistics (.5 credit, self-directed)

PE: competitive fencing, recreational swimming, biking, hiking

The languages, linguistics, programming, and astronomy are interests he's been pursuing for fun, which he wants to continue for "credit." As for the others: he read a book of essays on classical history and asked to focus on learning to write essays and research papers this year, US History is something he just wants to get out of the way, and he considers Thinkwell the "least worst" method of learning math, lol. (I did add in the half-credit in American Art, because I have the TTC course and lots of books and thought it would be worth doing in conjunction with American History.)

I think we've finally solidified the coming year. I've even got most all of the curriculum purchased and I'm ready to start digging through and scheduling.

Bible - The Kingdom of God: A Guide for Old Testament by Francis Breisch Jr. w/guide and tests from Christian Liberty

(Honors) English/Writing/Language Arts/Literature - This has proven to be the toughest class to figure out and will end up being quite cobbled together using the following resources.

Analytical Grammar season 2

Wordly Wise 3000 Book 9

Oak Meadow English 9 (without the grammar)

Writing the Essay (technically, we're actually doing this over the summer)

Writing the Research Paper (we may also be doing this one over the summer)

Figuratively Speaking

Wordsmith Craftsman

Jensen's Format Writing

The Exciting World of Creative Writing

NANOWRIMO

Literature List - I'm leaving some wiggle room here. Only the first 5 must be done, the rest are open to substitution, though DS14 helped choose the books.

The Wizard of Earthsea (OM9)

Animal Farm (OM9)

To Kill a Mockingbird (OM9)

Our Town (OM9)

Romeo & Juliet

Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Madness or Tales of Death and Dementia

Around the World in 80 Days

The Old Man and the Sea

A Separate Peace

A Tale of Two Cities (Europe)

The Good Earth (Asia)

Things Fall Apart (Africa)

Whale Rider (Australia/New Zealand)

End of the Spear (South America)

Shabanu: Daughter of the Wind (Middle East)

Endurance: Shakleton's Incredible Voyage (Antarctica)

Math - Teaching Textbooks Geometry. *We actually already started this and, so far, DS is enjoying it. I am still unsure as to whether we'll do the co-op class for the extra support or if he will be okay without it.

Social Studies - Oak Meadow World Geography plus Brodd's World Religions as supplemental reading.

Science - Apologia Biology at co-op class plus Campbell's Biology: Concepts and Connections as supplemental reading. *He has also decided that he would like to read the Holt Environmental Science book that Oak Meadow uses but without doing the entire course. He said it looked interesting.

Foreign Language - Co-op class utilizing the book Easy Spanish Step-by-Step.

Other

Physical Education - Tang Soo Do (year-round), baseball (spring/fall), swimming (year-round)

Fine Arts - Photography co-op class if it is determined that we won't be doing the Geometry class since they both meet at the same time. Drum lessons.

Electives - Drama (Fiddler on the Roof)

Am I missing anything?

I still feel rather lost even with most of our curriculum purchased.

English: MCT Level 4, Trisms Discovering the Ancient World

Math: MUS Algebra 1

Science: Science Shepherd Biology, Explore Evolution

History: Trisms Discovering the Ancient World

Foreign Language: Destinos

I've got the basics down. I'm not sure what electives I'll pull out of Trisms. It claims to offer 5 credits but I have no idea how I want to assign credits beyond English and history.

She also has no PE; she hates anything that looks like exercise, and I'm considering not requiring PE for her graduation. Anyone skip PE?

She may do a health half-credit using Apologia's Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology and some more in-depth sex ed.

She may do a photography credit if I can find something to use for it. Suggestions? She'll have use of a Nikon D3100 with the kit lens.

She'll be trying out American Heritage Girls with a friend as an extracurricular and social opportunity.
