Granny_Weatherwax Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 (edited) Do you wear t-shirts and leggings, pj sets, or those fancy nightgowns with matching robes? For me, t-shirts and shorts/leggings/sweats/whatever is a sign of being poor or young, something a teen or college student would wear and I just cannot do that anymore; except for when I'm camping. Then it's all about the base layer. Even then, I have a specific base layer set designated for sleeping. A matched pajama set is typical for comfort and hanging around the house. This is what I go for; usually from Kohls or JCPenney or other box store. The set I have now is about 6 years old. The lacy, silky nightgowns with matching robes are for sophisticated, mature, secure, feminine women. I would love to be able to wear the silky nightgowns but I feel like an imposter when I look at them. The women who dress that way in movies and on TV seem so put together and on top of things. Perfect hair, perfect manicure, glass of wine, dust and dog hair free homes. Nope, not in my life. Edited April 24, 2016 by ScoutermominIL Quote
clementine Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 PJ bottoms (pants or shorts) and an oversized, soft t-shirt - never a matching set. Quote
Alice Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 In the winter flannel PJ or fleece PJ pants and a Tshirt. In the summer I have other PJ pants from Target that I wear with a Tshirt. Generally the Tshirts are ones that are old and I no longer wear during the day but that are comfy and I like them and want to keep them. 1 Quote
Shelly in IL Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 I got a cute nightgown from tjmaxx. Spaghetti straps and knee length with a matching robe. Too hot all.the.time. In perimenopause to wear anything more- even in winter 1 Quote
Granny_Weatherwax Posted April 24, 2016 Author Posted April 24, 2016 I guess I'm young and poor then... Shrug. Please, don't take offense. I grew up poor and without real pjs and that's what I meant. I associate those with my childhood and or being in college. Quote
Critterfixer Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 Please, don't take offense. I grew up poor and without real pjs and that's what I meant. OneStepAtATime Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 Whatever's clean and easy to access. :) Tshirt and old sweats? Sure. Nightgown? Sure. Pjs? Works just fine. If it is clean, soft, comfortable, and won't tie me up in a knot overnight, I'm game. Quote
katilac Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 Typical nightwear for me is something like an oversized Avengers t-shirt and loose cotton shorts. I like a lot of men's t-shirts that would never fit correctly for day wear, so I just buy them big and - BOOM! Pajamas. Quote
katilac Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 Too hot all.the.time. When I'm hot, I trade the t-shirt for a tank top and ditch the shorts. I never did wear nightgowns much. I do have a long flannel one for when I'm sick, lol, that's everyone's signal to be extra nice to me. Quote
Farrar Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 Please, don't take offense. I grew up poor and without real pjs and that's what I meant. I associate those with my childhood and or being in college. I didn't, really. But what you describe is exactly what I sleep in - old T-shirts and sometimes pj pants, but often old sweats. I don't associate that with being young or poor, just comfortable and sleep. I find most things sold as pajamas are clingy in the wrong ways and not really breathable fabrics for me. I get very uncomfortable in most of them. Like, the fabric feels soft in the store, but wearing it for an hour, it makes me itchy and sweaty. 3 Quote
Hypatia. Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 Some kind of top that I where I can easily get a boob out for the little one, comfy pajama pants with it in the morning or evening. Quote
Prairie~Phlox Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 Panties & that's all. Always have & I hate it when I have to wear pajamas. 2 Quote
SemiSweet Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 For actually sleeping I wear a tank and underwear, but for lounging I wear leggings or booty shorts and a tank. I'm always hot, and for some reason I've developed an aversion to sleeves. I'm guessing that's because of spending the last three years in Hawaii. 2 Quote
alisoncooks Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 A soft, oversized graphic tee (currently this). If I am walking around the house, I usually throw on a pair of lounge/pj pants. 1 Quote
Wheres Toto Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 Another young and poor I guess. Not offended, just find it amusing. I grew up very poor and wore those cheap polyester nightgowns. Hated them. They were scratchy and ugly. I wear sweatpants and t-shirts, or sweatpants and long sleeve fleece tops from Target. I think they are actually meant to be worn under clothes in the winter. I have restless leg syndrome and for whatever reason, it feels better if I have cloth against my legs. So I always wear pants. And I can't stand when loose pj pants ride up during the night so the thicker sweats with elastic bottoms are much more comfortable to me. Our bedroom is super-cold in the winter (an add-on that's not hooked into the heat), and it's rare that it's hot enough at night for the sweats to not work even in summer. Nightgowns get all tangled up as well, since I'm a restless sleeper. Quote

LucyStoner Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 My pajamas are mostly what I slip into when I need to get out of bed but not get dressed (kid crying or need to go make coffee or whatever). In bed I am almost always sleeping without anything on. I run hot but I like the feel of heavy bedding over me. If I wore both pjs and used my bedding, I'd melt. 2 Quote
Pawz4me Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 (edited) For pajamas I wear a Hanes t-shirt (I have a collection of colors, all washed until they're super soft) and yoga pants or elastic waist shorts, depending on the temperature. I slip the yoga pants or shorts off when I climb in bed. I'm neither young nor poor. :) I wear what I do because (1) it's extremely comfortable -- much more comfy than any pajamas I've ever found and (2) if a neighbor happens to see me when I take the dog out for his last whizzer at night or first one of the morning it looks like I have on real clothes. creekland Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 At home without anyone but hubby around, nothing. At home or traveling with others around, a large older t-shirt of some sort and shorts or sweats pending weather. I've never understood why anyone pays for PJs of any sort. I don't think badly of folks who do, but it's just not something I'd spend money on. That sort of money goes into our eating out and/or traveling account. My guys grew up wearing t-shirts and shorts or sweats (or just underwear) and still choose to do that. They don't seem to feel deprived. 1 Quote
heartlikealion Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I wear pj pants/pj shorts/leggings paired with a t-shirt/tank/pj top and it's not uncommon for the most ridiculous sock mates -- whatever I can locate. I don't sleep as well barefoot. I get cold easily. I have no desire for the silky stuff. My robe is thick and has a hood! It's one of my favorite Christmas gifts. Dh got it for me. Quote
medawyn Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Right now, whatever fits and doesn't bug me (39 weeks and counting...) When I'm nursing, always a nursing tank (I need a little extra support) and underwear or comfy jammy pants. We keep baby in our room for 3-4 months, but after that the rocking chair is COLD on a sleepy posterior. Although it's been a while, but if the day comes when I'm neither nursing not pregnant, I imagine I'll be back to panties/nothing with something easy to slip in next to the bed for middle of the night kid stuff. Or those times when the neighbor rings the doorbell at 3 am to tell you your garage door is up and scares the beejeebers out of you. Quote
Granny_Weatherwax Posted April 25, 2016 Author Posted April 25, 2016 I could never sleep in just a tank or underwear. I am way too body conscious. I have bits and parts that just aren't as firm as they should be or are covered in stretch marks and I want to keep all of that covered. I hope you all feel my cyber envy. 3 Quote
AnnE-girl Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I generally wear pj pants and old t-shirts or one of DH's t-shirts. I have a few summer nightgowns, but I don't like how they bunch up around my legs. Actual pajama sets never fit me well since I'm so short. I've never associated pjs or lack thereof with economic status. I grew up solidly middle/upper middle class. I do draw the line at leaving the house in clothes that have been slept in, or sleeping in clothes that have been out of the house without washing. I think the ritual of changing for bed helps transition to sleep, and clothes that have been out in public seem gross for my clean bed. Quote
Joyofsixreboot Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 (edited) A tank or cami and panties. I despise pj's, pants are horrible and nightgowns are the work of the devil. Edited April 25, 2016 by joyofsix 2 Quote
SparklyUnicorn Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Young and poor? Geesh I'll go with young. I wear shorts or sweat pants and a t-shirt usually. Problem with PJs is they don't tend to have petite sizes. I don't want something I'm going to trip over nor do I want to hem pajamas. And I don't like stuff like night gowns. My MIL has sent me PJs. She somehow finds stuff that fits my height. Quote
kitten18 Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Tank top and underwear. I can't stand anything on my legs when I'm sleeping. It all gets tangled up and i feel like I'm suffocating. 2 Quote
Bluegoat Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I don't usually wear anything, I can't stand the feeling of moving around and the cloth of my clothes rubbing against the sheets. If I have to wear something it's usally boxer shorts and a tank. For camping I tend to go with long underwear. 1 Quote
Mimm Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 In summer I wear only my panties. In winter, I will sometimes add a t-shirt and pajama pants on cold nights. 1 Quote
The Girls' Mom Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Usually a ratty old t-shirt and my undies. I cannot stand pants/shorts or long gowns...my legs feel smothery. Dh has the same sleeping attire. 1 Quote
J-rap Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I love the feel of real pajamas, and that's what I wear. I can't sleep with nothing on (not comfortable for me at all), and heavier stuff feels uncomfortable. Cozy pajamas in the winter and thin cotton pajamas in the summer is what I like. 2 Quote
mtomom Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I wear shorts or pajama type bottoms with an oversized t-shirt. I actually wear men's undershirts on top most often. They are cheap, light, and comfortable. 2 Quote
Wabi Sabi Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Leggings and a tank top...aka young and poor. ;) Quote
Lolly Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I wear clothes until I go to bed. Then, I take them off...I guess I wear sheets. 2 Quote
AmandaVT Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 tank top and unmatching shorts or PJ's pants depending on how cold it is outside. Add me to the young and poor category! :-) Quote
Luckymama Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I don't wear anything ;) That heated mattress pad dh bought for our anniversary a few years ago has paid off in savings on pajamas :D 3 Quote

meena Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I've gotten a few pj sets as gifts. I usually split the sets and only wear the pants because the shirts are either long sleeved (too hot most of the year) or just an uncomfortable fit. Most often I wear pj pants or shorts and t-shirts that have gotten demoted from regular wear. My favorites include freebie YMCA and Lightning hockey shirts, as well as a t-shirt my DH was wearing on one of our early dates. I have one sleeping night shirt that is super frumpy but it's so soft. DH knows I've had one of those days when all I want to do is take a bath and get in my comfy shirt. Quote
Farrar Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I can't wear nothing to bed like a lot of you. For one thing, sometimes the kids still slip in bed and that seems awkward. But, more importantly, whatever I wear to bed is whatever I'm wearing in my dreams. No, really. 3 Quote

Joker Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I can't wear nothing since one of our dogs sleeps under our covers. I just can't do it. All four of us are pretty much always sweats/pj pants/shorts and t-shirts. Quote
HSmomof2 Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Usually a t-shirt and yoga capris. I prefer to exercise in the morning, so wearing this, I just need to put on a bra and shoes. Quote
edelweiss Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I wear matching cotton sets. My favorites are from Garnet Hill. Quote
SKL Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 (edited) At my present age, I can't stand tight clothes, so I wear loose pajama pants (or shorts if it's hot out), along with whatever [loose] t-shirt I have been wearing all day. I also wear this same get-up all day long when I'm at home (which I usually am). When I was younger, I would wear long johns and a t-shirt. I have never owned leggings, and sweat pants tend to be too tight at the waist for sleeping. I have a big drawer full of floor-length "decent" night dresses. (All gifts.) But I almost never use them, because they don't allow the freedom of movement I need. The source of my pajama bottoms for many years was my kid sister, who sometimes bought me pajamas for Christmas. Now we have a no-gifts-for-adults rule, so I bought my first pair of flannel jammy bottoms this past winter, after a couple of my favorites became too holey. Edited April 25, 2016 by SKL Quote

SKL Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I have nothing against sleeping nekkid, but guess what - that's not an option in perimenopause. :P One has to be prepared for anything. Plus, my bedroom door needs fixed so I can lock it. Plus, I might as well wait until my kids are old enough to never wake me with the sound of retching etc. By that time I may be in an assisted living facility. :P Might as well get used to wearing night clothes.
