lewelma
Yeahhhh! Congrats and glad to hear from you again! We've been on vacation with my parents. We got back yesterday, and the committee posted it this morning. It was a lovely surprise! However, the news has ruined ds's concentration for the rest of the day! So much work has gone into earning this medal. I am just so happy for him. [edited for anonymity] The xxxx is next week, and we expect that he will get his butt kicked. It includes xxxxx. :tongue_smilie:

lewelma
Thanks everyone for all the well wishes. As many of you know, we started on this journey less than 2.5 years ago. I posted here asking for advice about how to help my mathy kid find something to do that would match the violin string group, trio, concerts, competitions, etc. DS had felt drawn to music because of his wonderful teachers and opportunities, and he just did not have that kind of mentoring in math. Kathy in Richmond directed us to the NZ IMO training program, which I had never heard of. We spent some time at a dessert bar that summer trying out previous camp selection problems and finding that together we could do *none* of them. But he decided to dedicate that year to coming up to competition level. That was 2013 -- the last year I was involved in his math education. And I will say that that year broke me. I got major burn out from that huge push, and it took me 6 full months to overcome it. I'm a science person, not a math person, and the theoretical math we were working on was like nothing I had ever seen. Keeping up with him in order to guide and train his thinking was a desperate effort for me. From Dec 2013 to Feb 2015 he took 4 AoPS classes, and here we are. He started 9th grade in February. I want to thank all you lovely folks for helping me design a program suitable for my ds. Many of you have read about our struggles and successes, and I truly appreciate having a place to share and seek advice. Where would I have been without you? lewelma
I have a funny story. Because ds is homeschooled, the Committee asked me to help them find a testing venue as they have always worked with schools. As of yet, we are not connected to a school, and the committee has not yet replaced their representative at our local university when the last guy moved away a few months ago. My neighbor, hearing of our troubles, offered to give it to ds at the Law Library where he works. So ds took it there. My friend decided to give ds 'scrap' paper for the exam that was actually 'scrap' paper - with old legal briefs on the back. I'm not exactly sure that this is what the committee was referring to in the instructions, but my friend thought it would be very funny as all scrap paper has to be turned in. We figured that ds was the only examinee that had a law librarian's business card stapled to his exam with real, legal scrap paper for his workings. :001_smile:

MBM
What wonderful news!!!!! It is so much fun to follow your son's journey and no doubt will be helpful for future mathy kids who want to know what others have done. We will be rooting for your son in the next competition!!! :D Congrats again!   Edited to not mention where you live, just in case.
quark
<removed quoted text> :grouphug: You know what they say about behind every successful person, there is always someone there right? It takes a lot of work (sometimes crazy, sometimes wonderful) to keep up with our kids. It must be so fulfilling that all this hard work is paying off! Truly well done. <removed quoted text> Keep these stories Ruth! Some day it will be in his biography and some homeschooled kid will read it and be inspired. I am doubly impressed because of the scarcity of resources you have in NZ to nurture a kid like him. So happy for and proud of you guys.

lewelma
AW, thanks so much guys.He is at the xxxx right now and was pretty discouraged about it last night. He is expecting the exam to be too hard -- likely hard enough that he will spend four hours answering none. I just keep reminding him that it is practice and not to worry about it, but that is easier said than done. This whole year has been such a rollercoaster!
