So, about that royal baby...you excited?

Yes! I don't care about celebs at all and hate reality TV. But I see this as a historical event (birth of a future monarch) and I admit that I find Willam and Catherine very interesting.

That said, I'm not overly excited or counting down the days. But I will smile when they announce the birth.

I'm excited! I can't wait til the baby's here. I love Will and Kate (and Harry! Can't forget about him!).

I must confess that I don't love Harry - or at least his escapades as reported on the front of the tabloids, if there is any truth to any of them.  (The check-out lane tabloid headlines are my sole news source on celebrities - royal or otherwise.)

How could you not love this guy? :D  (Yeah, he did some dumb stuff in Vegas, but shhh...let's forget about that and concentrate on the good qualities). Seriously, he is very active in charities and he is adorable with kids.

I adore him.  :001_wub:   The Vegas stuff made me laugh.

I'm excited for the baby.  I think Kate is charming.

I wish them well—and all—but the mock-feudal institution the "Windsors" head up is an an anacronism that ought to be quietly dispensed with.

Maybe 10 million people could show up in Trafalger Square, and we won't call it a coup? :D

They should be Throne Out!

No, the emperor's brother and wife popped out a boy in 2006. So the line of succession will be the eldest son of the emperor Akihito, to the youngest son, to the grandson and bypass Aiko, the one and only child - a daughter - of the current heir to the throne.

There was of course some serious speculation that said little boy was what one might call a "not naturally occurring" pregnancy...as in, "make us a male child NOW you fertility specialist you" kind of thing. However, who knows and who cares. The pressure on the princesses in that family is HORRID and the press should just leave them alone for crying out loud. I remember the flap though and thought, "Wow! And Britain thought their paparazzi could be bad! Nope, the Japanese royal family has it much worse!!"

It's a sick, patriarchial, misogynistic system over there. They acknowledge the fact that after Masako - heir apparent's wife - had a miscarriage a couple of years after their daughter was born - the pressure on her by the emperor and his wife, along with endless calls from government officials to remind her of her duty to produce a son - Masako became so depressed she rarely even appears in public. Her depression is very profound. Naruhito keeps his daughter Aiko away from her grandparents - also a common fact which has caused all kinds of angst over there - because he doesn't want his father and mother to make her feel like such a huge disappointment for being a girl. Soooooooooooooo sad....

I'm slightly interested in Kate and William's baby. Slightly. However, I was a little more interested when Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Princess Mary had their children. Dh's family is Danish and they are long away shirt-tail relation to the throne. Despite the years and intermarriage with non-Danish spouses, the resemblance is still close.

I'll see if I can post a pic. Dh looks very much like the prince and when he smiles, he looks startlingly similar.

In 2013?!? I honestly had no clue! Government officials telling her to have a boy?? Did they miss the sperm talk in biology?!?

I was surprised about a year ago. Talking to my SIL (who is a teacher, including once teaching sex ed) and brother. Neither of them knew that the sperm determined the sex of the child.

Good grief! :svengo: I guess the Test of Basic Skills for entrance into Teacher Ed programs needs to be a bit more comprehensive!

think what you wish, but most of the Commonwealth is very happy to have a royal family at it's head.

I don't usually pay any attention to famous people and them having babies, but I really like William and Kate so I am at least a little excited about their new little one.  I am a bit surprised at some of your attitudes toward them though.

I think it will be a girl and she will be named Alexandra Diana.

I was in college in Texas when Charles and Diana get married.  I lived in a house with 3 other girls and we got up EARLY ( I am thinking maybe around 3 or 4, can't really remember) to watch the wedding since this was before vcr's and recording of shows so if one wanted to watch the wedding, it had to be done live.

my dd is named after Diana and the strange thing is that we have never met another person named Diana (in real life) .  I had thought that would have been a very popular name.

I'm excited about it...we're planning a tea party to celebrate the birth, which oldest DD is hoping will happen on her birthday. Although we're Americans, we're very interested in British history and the monarchy!

Tea party! Brilliant idea!

I hope your dd gets a royal birthday buddy!

Well, it won't be Prince John--that will never happen again. He will have Louis, Arthur and George in there somewhere. My guess for a girl is Alexandra Elizabeth Diana. The Elizabeth WILL be before Diana.

This is part of the reason that I'm so NOT interested in anything royal. (not meaning to pick on you, Margaret) The fact that there is something political about a BABY. I am perfectly comfortable reading about this kind of thing in history (love it, actually) but to be faced with it in the present is so incredibly icky-feeling to me. I don't like the artificial importance placed on all the minutia involved with a new baby. It shouldn't be that way.

Perhaps, but I was pretty disappointed to hear that when the grandson and wife of the wealthiest woman on the planet travel to visit a country that paid for her to be that wealthy, we foot the travel bill and all visiting expenses, too! Ridiculous, in my opinion. I've heard way more complaints from us "colonies" about the royals than support when you really look at the costs and benefits. Australians seem to be the loudest complainers, too. We Canadians are just too quiet. Maybe we shy away from complaining because we're afraid that our American neighbours will say "boot them out, like we did."

What really are the benefits of being a commonwealth country anyway, aside from participating in the games every few years? Our taxes are too high already with our own government. I just don't feel the love when throwing more money at the monarchy.

When any head of state/country visits the country he/she visits foots the bill. I believe this is the same for every country. If your prime minister was to visit Australia would foot the bill If the US president was to visit Australia foots the bill.

Personally I have never heard anyone in Australia complaining except a previous Prime minister~ but he was discounted by most Aussies because he was Irish and anti monarchy.

I think they're a wonderful couple and I'm happy for them.  But I'm not excited about the baby.  Celebrity news is mildly interesting to me, but nothing that I get excited about.

I consider this kind of celebrity news to be totally different than when say Angelina and Brad had a child.  This couple are not actors or entertainers.  This couple is royalty ... a totally different classification.

Yup that is SOP when dignitaries visit a country.

I don't give a crap about most celebrity gossip, but the Royal family is completely different.  We are looking forward to the birth.  I remember watching and being interested when it was Diana having the boys, and now to think he son is all grown up and having a child is pretty cool.

I heard today that she may be in labour and reporters are waiting outside the hospital for news. So for those interested, it sounds like it might be time.

I'm not seeing this in the headlines, so if it's true it's just happened! Reporters have actually been camped outside the hospital for days/weeks now.

I've actually been checking the news to see if there is any...news. :leaving:

Yeah I don't know.  I was told by someone I was talking to, I haven't checked headlines yet to be sure.

I wouldn't expect Australia to foot the bill. That's what we pay taxes for - to allow our Prime Minister to do his job. If his job includes visiting Australia for an official visit or a special meeting, then I'd expect for Canadians to pay. I would also think it would be fair to pay Australia for the costs of police time for the motorcades. Just because hosting countries do pay this bill, I don't necessarily think it's right.

No, not excited but while watching CNN this morning over coffee my husband felt strongly that, "There can't be anyone more happy about this baby than George Zimmerman. The media finally found something else to discuss."  We finally switched the channel to Squawk Box a little earlier than usual just to stop the noise. :)

Honestly, I feel kinda bad for her. I remember the 'crotch watch' w/several of my babies, folks calling, "Is the baby here yet?" "Any neewwwws?" and folks sitting at my place, watching me expectantly.

I can't imagine the entire world (or what seems like it) on crotch watch. No pressure there at all
