  1. I'm in Salt Lake for another five weeks or so. I'm planning to order some curriculum while I'm here in America but I'm curious if there's any stores around here to preview some of it. I've been to the library and checked out oodles of homeschool books I've always wanted to read. :hurray: Thanks!
  2. Can anyone give me an idea how much the heat treatment would cost? Ballpark of course, I know it will vary, pm me if you'd like. They seem to think it is only a problem in their bedroom now. I'm not sure what they've done to treat it, they make think that vacuuming is enough and not be aware what is needed. But I will arrange for an inspection and we'll go from there. They'll both be recovering from heart procedures. One of them is not very hygenic. They could be spreading them like crazy. I'm afraid to get in their car, but I certainly can't afford to rent one for the five weeks I'm there. I've booked a hotel for the first week and see how far we get. It's just heartbreaking for me to be on the other side of the world from them, and find out they've been dealing with this. Plus the hoarding and the general uncleanliness of their house. But in five weeks we should be able to do a lot to get their house in shape. In between surgeries and hospital visits. I'm going without kids, so I'll actually be able to get things done!!! :hurray: (while missing my kids and husband like crazy) :crying:
  3. Sigh, I typed up a whole response and lost it. The issue about the mental state is that they've apparently known about the bed bugs for several years and haven't done anything. Too expensive, probably. But that means they had them last time I visited. But I didn't sleep there. A family friend pulled the couch away from the wall and found dead bugs eveywhere. So it sounds bad. I'm hoping against hope that it's limited to upstairs since that's where they sleep and where the living room is. Most of their books are downstairs. Where can I purchase the zippered mattress covers? Do they need to be special ordered or can I find them at Wal-Mart or BBB? Thanks for all the info. I haven't visited these boards in ages but I knew someone here would have experience with bed bugs. Thanks heaps.
  4. I live on the other side of the world from my elderly parents. I am visiting later this week because they are both going through some serious health issues. I've just learned that they have a horrible bed bug infestation. Horrible, as in they've had them for years. I learned this through a concerned friend of the family. They don't even know I know yet. I was planning to stay with them but now I've got to figure out what to do, I won't be able to sleep there. I need to know where to start. I know the things are very hard to get rid of. I'm assuming the worst, that they will have invaded every corner of the house. They have heaps and heaps of books. I will be contacting an exterminator, of course. Will we be able to save their furniture? Couches, mattresses, etc. Do they get into the carpet? Can their books be saved? To make it all worse, one of them is a bit of a hoarder and it will be hard to convince them to rid themselves of things. I had high hopes of just cleaning up while I was there. Now it's a different ball game. Thanks for any advice. And please, be kind. I know this brings into question their mental state but I can't worry about that until we get them through their medical procedures and their house cleaned up.
  5. Bumping this to see if anyone has used the iBook? We're travelling and I'd like a downloadable version rather than the printed book. Wondering if it' sufficient by itself or do you really need the printed tm.
  6. I also think it was Get Color...the pic at the top of this article seems familiar. http://www.hgtv.com/design/decorating/color/jane-lockhart-talks-color-tips
  7. I wouldn't risk the friendship by doing this. A week would be okay. Not five. Hire someone else.
  8. Congrats! What grades/subjects will you teach?
  9. You can get an ipod that is only for music or audio, no screen. Would that suit?
  10. I was hoping that someone would explain this! Never heard of it either.
  11. Not too long ago I was reading the section of the WTM that goes through a typical day/week for each grade level. It mentioned that one day a week the child would be writing letters. I thought that was a great idea- letters to relatives, friends, emails, etc.
  12. I just want to share a bit of my story in the hopes that you might be encouraged (or anyone else who comes across this). I have experienced post natal depression several times. With this last pregnancy I was so afraid of it happening again that I was in tears when I was discussing it with a midwife early in my pregnancy. She gave me a referral to PANDA. (PANDA is an Australian resource: Post and Antenatal Depression Association.) I was feeling good, so I called and made an appointment for much later so that we could meet before the baby was born and discuss coping strategies. I've never actually seen a counselor for depression before, but like I said, I was feeling good so it was easy to call and book an appointment. Then the depression hit. Hard. I knew I should call and reschedule that appointment for sooner. But I didn't, because when you are in the midst of it you find it nearly impossible to get help, to make that call. So I suffered and when that day came I went to the appointment, because I knew I might not make it if I didn't. She came and got me out of the waiting room and by the time we got into her office and I sat down in that chair I had dissolved into tears. She listened, and she helped. And it was so good to have that, to have someone I could tell all my deepest fears and emotions to. Her job is to deal with depressed mums, so she's used to it, and she didn't blink when I told her I was afraid I'd hurt my baby. Or all the other stuff I told her. She's heard it before. And she helped. And talking that stuff out with her made it so I could get through the next couple of days. And then I'd go back and see her the following week, and I could get through another couple of days. I was off the charts for depression and mid-line for anxiety. And she got it, totally got it. Later I got to participate in a group with other mums, and it was so nice to be able to voice all those things in a safe place. I was afraid of taking the medication too, and managed to get through the pregnancy without it. I'm not sure that was the best decision. I started it soon after the birth and I'm still on it (baby is 13 months now) because I've learned from experience that it takes my body awhile to settle down after a birth. I heard on the radio over the weekend that 1 in 7 new mums in Australia is diagnosed with depression. And I think, if 1 in 7 are diagnosed, how many more are going undiagnosed? I know it's hard to get help, but that's because you aren't thinking clearly. That's why I linked some hotlines above, you can call and be anonymous and hopefully talking to someone will help. Please get help, please make the call. Don't spend your whole pregnancy like this. (I hope I don't sound over-dramatic here. The experience is still fresh for me, and I hate that anyone could be feeling that way.)
  13. Here's a list of support resources by country and by state for the US. http://www.postpartumprogress.com/postpartum-depression-support-organizations-in-the-us-canada-uk-south-africa-australia-new-zealand Here's a hotline for postpartum. I know you aren't postpartum, but they'll be able to help. http://www.postpartum.net/ The hardest part is making the phone call, and then following through. If you are in Australia, here's the link to PANDA. I used them and the experience was good, I highly recommend them. http://www.panda.org.au/
  14. I've had good luck there too. I'm curious about your US forwarding address, who did you use? When I've looked into it I've had a hard time figuring the cost and whether it would be worth it.
  15. I was so there during my last pregnancy. I remember too well how it feels. I don't know how I made it. I didn't want to take anything either, but I did as soon as baby was born. How far along are you? What country are you in? I have to leave now but will come back to this post later. Just breathe and hang on. You'll get through this. You will.
  16. Yes, yes, they'll love it! Very unique experience and so fun!
  17. I'm in Australia also, and thinking if it was one of the fb groups then the buyer may not necessarily be a homeschooler. If it was one of the homeschool sites it's more likely she is a homeschooler. I have bought and sold on some of these sites before, I agree prices are high because you are getting it without paying international postage. I always check before I buy, I know exactly what deal I'm getting and I would expect others to also. Postage here can be awful, I've posted things in more than one package before to save money for the buyer, I always let them know just like you've done. I don't think a refund is warranted in this case. PS- My last two RR orders only took 3-4 weeks! Happy dance!
  18. Salt on cantaloupe and green apples. Sugar on grapefruit. :)
  19. We recently got some of these Private Eye Loupes and they are a big hit. http://www.rainbowresource.com/product/sku/000357/30784aef47e99282105bd6c3 And I like these dry erase pockets: http://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=049212 And these Prof Noggins trivia games. There are so many topics my kids would like to get them all. http://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?subject=19&category=6377 I'd like to get some of these Fandex but haven't yet: http://www.rainbowresource.com/searchspring.php?q=fandex That's enough for now. :blushing: Wait! Learning wrap-ups! http://www.rainbowresource.com/product/sku/013150/30784aef47e99282105bd6c3 Okay. Done now. :auto:
  20. These pencil boxes with a base plate on top are soooo perfect for Lego lovers! http://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?subject=1&category=4586 This allows my kids to take Lego with them to wherever we are going- in the car, friend's houses, waiting rooms, etc. They're a good size, holds heaps of minifigures and enough pieces to build on the go. We get asked about them all the time. And they are so inexpensive! I could do a commercial. :coolgleamA:
  21. I'm so glad it worked for you! It was someone here that helped me figure out how to print to OneNote. :) :driving:
  22. You need to open the pdf in Adobe, not in Chrome or another browser.
