  1. Did you all know their products are available as ebooks? Page 54 of the catalogue says all their student wkbks and teacher editions are available as ebooks. So I went to the website and lo and behold... http://classicalacademicpress.com/ebooks/ You can even rent them to save a bit! Somebody give me a happy dance smiley!!! (I'm on my ipad and I don't remember the code.) (I'm in Australia, so anytime I can save on shipping, I'm a happy camper!) So I'm looking specifically at W&R. Looks like printing is limited, but I might get the ebook version of the teacher's manual and the printed student book so that I can make copies for my younger kids (allowed in the printed book copyright). But if you're happy for your student to write on separate paper you can save a bit that way as well. :D
  2. Victor Journey Through the Bible? http://www.amazon.com/The-Victor-Journey-through-Bible/dp/156476480X
  3. Hmmm, I'd let your oldest complete the history cycle with SOTW while the youngers do GTG or FIAR. Then start a new history cycle the following year, with your k'er as a tag along (not expecting a great deal of work, but enjoying any picture books, colouring pages, activities you do). That way your oldest will have been through the whole cycle and starting her next go-through, and you're keeping them all on the same cycle which will be easier for you. My problem when I try to do them separately, though, is that my oldest wants to do what the youngers are doing. So if I tried to do GTG with just my youngers he'd revolt. YMMV. ;)
  4. We love GSWL. The lessons are short and effective. They're so simple and to the point that you honestly might be dissappointed if you really love the format of the SSL lessons. If I were you I'd do Minimus if it was already on my shelf. Then on to LFC.
  5. Do you already have a computer at home? (Okay, you're posting here so obviously you have something!) If so, are you happy to use that computer to video chat on your end? If so, you'd only need to purchase something for him. Whatever he chooses, you should be able to make it work. If he goes the iphone route he can use Skype on it and you can use it on your PC. I use Skype on my ipad to skype with relatives on their pc. If they were also on an i-something we would use Facetime.
  6. I've watched the premiere now and it's safe to say that it's only based on the book, not the book made into a movie/tv show, that's probably one of the reasons why it has a different name. There are entirely new characters (Maggie- the doctor), the circumstances of the boy's death are different, even the fact that he was the first to return in the show. I won't say more since some of the plot from the book may end up in the show. I had to keep reminding myself it's only based on the book (chanted that to myself several times) so that I could focus on the show and not the differences. I'll probably watch it, at least a few episodes, because the premise is so intriguing. I'm curious if this is supposed to be a mini-series? They could certainly stretch it out to be several seasons.
  7. Pet Sematary. Thankfully it's not like that, not a horror show.
  8. IIRC from other posts, Heather's a midwife.
  9. Thank you for the update. This puts my mind at ease and helps me map out a plan for my oldest. :)
  10. This. Easy and painless. We're just starting it although I've had it printed and ready to go for longer than I care to mention. With each page we'll also google some images to go with it. I also plan to do some of the Montessori landform activities. I also like this geography terms poster and am adding it to my wishlist... http://www.rainbowresource.com/product/sku/038146/2c72c4c6e3a7313ac82f770b
  11. For us it would just be all or none. We do things as a family and that's that. If it were me I'd try my hardest to find discount tickets and all go together, because it sounds like all your kids will enjoy it (and honestly will age out of it before too much longer!). Maybe your kids can brainstorm some ways to make some money before then? Tell them if they can raise half the money you'll match it? Mow lawns, make necklaces to sell, etc.
  12. I'll just reiterate that you want a pediatric chiropractor. The icpa website referenced above is how I found my current chiro (although she's not listed on there now for whatever reason). My 8 month old has been going since birth. He and my other kids are adjusted once a month now, the first couple of months he had one every 2-3 weeks. She only used her fingertips to adjust him at first. It's very gentle, and no neck manipulation. She uses an activator for the rest of us, so over all it is very gentle. I prefer this to the drop-table adjustments because it is so much more gentle on the body. When you make the initial call you can ask them what kind of adjusting they do.
  13. No, but thank you! I'm hoping for a bit of sleep tonight. These days it's a toss-up as to whether I'll get to sleep or not. It's a phase, it's a phase, it's a phase.
  14. Not reading the thread...the show is premiering here in Australia tonight. I'm recording the first episode but I'm not sure I'll watch the whole series. I just finished the book and found it a bit anticlimactic. The premise is cool, but the actual story in the book was a bit of a let down. Still thought-provoking. I imagine they'd have to change the character storylines quite a bit for tv. Actually, just from the commercials they changed one major thing...the parents in the book are more elderly, I think their boy died fifty years before. It's a major thing because it so affects everything about how they relate to their son and to other townsfolk. The note from the author at the end of the book says he wanted to explore what it would be like if you could just have that bit of more time with a loved one after they're gone. Lovely idea.
  15. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some days are like that. :D
  16. I don't order from Amazon because of that per book fee. Per shipment? Fine. Per book? Nope, too expensive. I have ordered other items from them in the last few months, though, and their shipping was less than two weeks, so maybe that's improved. :) Book Dep, yes, the shipping fee is just in the price. But I prefer it that way so that I don't have to worry about graduated shipping rates, etc to make sure I'm getting the best shipping rate. And it's always cheaper than buying it here in Australia. Book Dep is owned by Amazon. When Home Art Studio first came out it was only available through Jerry's. They wanted $36 to ship one DVD!!!
  17. So annoyed that after I posted here I discovered that Awesome Books has recently done away with their free postage! Grrrrr...
  18. I had a baby last year and found myself visiting pregnancy boards with birth clubs, you know the ones. After spending so much time here, I was flabbergasted at the tone of the boards there. Choosing to homeschool your kids (or caring enough about their education to seek out forums with the title of WTM) requires a certain maturity that is not required for mere pregnancy. :D These boards have such a good tone to them. We have our moments, but overall the level of maturity and thoughtful responses makes this a 'safe' place to ask a question about nearly anything.
  19. Regarding the lead- did they test the bathtub? That's where it turned out to be in our old house. We got the tub sealed and the lead levels reduced right away. (This was a baby so nightly baths with some of the water inevitably ending up in the mouth.)
  20. I've ordered dozens of used books from Awesome Books, free shipping to Australia when you are purchasing at least two items. It's my favourite source for picture books, Usborne books, etc if you don't mind used. You can purchase in $AUD and pay with paypal. Prices vary with the value of our dollar, but used books start at about $4.50. (Used to be under $4 until our dollar tanked.). In the dozens of books I've ordered I've had a few turn up in pretty bad used condition, but for the most part I've been happy (I'm not that picky, though). Their customer service has been fine when I've needed to contact them. Shipping speeds vary, generally 2-4 weeks. I can't get over the prices of books here. You use Booko, right? I can't believe how often the Aussie booksellers are $20 or $30 more than buying from Bk Dep! I don't know how the bookstores stay open at those prices. I wait until I have over $500 to order from RR to get that 20% shipping rate, or combine orders with other homeschoolers to reach that amount. It's annoying that their prices plus 20% is still cheaper than anywhere else. Sharing your frustration. ;)
  21. Flickr has 1 TB of storage for free. You can set privacy so that no one else can see them. If you ever do have a disaster and need to download them, the files are the original size, not compressed. But apparently they can only be downloaded one at a time, I read there are services to help with bulk downloading. Free, can't beat that!
  22. 9yo boy here too. Unfortunately his attitude is rubbing off on the 6yo which is really frustrating. Thanks to these boards I was expecting this, there have been other threads about unreasonable 9yo boys. ;)
  23. Another vote for Feedly. I use it on my ipad and pc. The only frustration I have is that if I leave it open it will refresh itself and I'll lose my spot. I used to leave Google Reader open in a separate tab and go back to it during the day. With Feedly I must make sure to finish what I was reading or it will refresh and mark that entry as read.
  24. This. But we are starting Fable about halfway through WWE3 and will continue to use it on our weeks off from Fable.
