What country would you take your family to if you left the U.S.?

Recommended Posts

Well, I'd love to be back in England with my family but the current political and economic climate there is worse than here in the US. My brother lives in NZ and that's one of the few places I've ever wanted to visit, so I'd probably choose NZ... or perhaps the wilds of Scotland, if they locals would have me :)

A lot of you are saying Australia. Havent you read Collapse?? Jared Diamond talks about how societies succeed or fail and he targeted this country as being of the brink of failure. :001_huh: Also, me and a boyfriend looked into living in Australia in the 80's and they wanted anyone not a citizen to either have a patron or have enough money that they would not be a drain on the economy. Available jobs were for citizens.

I have wondered the same thing...where would we go. I dont want a country where Sharia law will come into play (Britian, Canada), not too much violence or upheaval (lots of countries), where non-citizens may be targeted (pick a place), where the drug lords arent killing people (Mexico) where poverty does not rule....

Maybe there is no place like home (I do like the joke about Texas). But I really wish there were a good place to consider. Maybe a good place to look is South America somewhere??

THese are my thoughts....

My friends are from Italy, and we have talked about this. They would not want to raise thier son in Italy (political reasons) and if this country goes down a similiar path... they said Ireland is still affordable, but they could afford to live in Switzerland. I think we could all get together and buy Iceland, aren't they bankrupt? :001_smile: I have wondered if Alaska would also try to become independent of the US, but if Texas would - I would much rather stay in the south. I love this country and I have hope that the freedoms and rights of the people will prevail.

If I had to move, we would probably go to Switzerland. My father was a Swiss citizen, and I have hundreds of relatives over there, so it would be a simpler move than any other place.

Having said that, if the sky was the limit and I could just pick, I don't really know WHAT I would do. I am so fascinated by the whole world and want to see every inch of it. If it were up to me we'd probably be gypsies, but dh wouldn't do well on that life. He needs a home base. He would probably be attracted to a warm, Spanish-speaking locale, so it's easy for me to see us ending up somewhere like Costa Rica.

I would want to move to a nation that has the basic freedoms especially those that we are supposed to have under the Constitution.

Freedom of speech.

Freedom to believe as I wish.

Freedom to bear arms.

Freedom to maintain my property.

Freedom to HS my children.

Oh yes most importantly, freedom to keep an ape (see primate thread and yes this is a joke).

that only leaves....... Texas! (It is after all a whole 'nother country)

Ok, that was funny! BTW, I am a Texan by birth. I know relatives that still think Texas should secede.

LOL! Nice idea, but then there'd be the pesky problem of governing. We'd have to have a Shoe Wearing Doctrine, the Harry Potter readers would have to be kept in one area, some people would have to wear the CC stickers, the Dyson and Miele people would be fighting over the state vac...we'd have to ship all those heavy Kitchen Aid mixers over, there'd be the question of whether to observe Halloween, and what if they don't have Mike's there?!

I used to live in Austin and I would have to go with the Texas answer. I loved it there (well, except for the fire ants and the heat in the summer). My practicality wins out though because I can't imagine living anywhere else. My youngest daughter was born with a clubfoot and it has been difficult enough getting her good ortho care here in the US but that problem is worse outside the US. I have one friend who brought her son to the US from South Africa for his foot treatment.

England or Wales. I've always been an Anglophile. I'm not thinking in anyway realistically, like if we could work there or would be allowed to go or whatever, just that I've always had a fascination for those countries.

My grandmother was French and I've been to Paris many times. I think it's a beautiful country but I don't think we're hip enough to be French. Or thin enough. :)

I hate to even admit this, but the size of a country's spiders would have more to do with my ability to live there than whether or not I could homeschool.

Australia is out. Their spiders are enormous.

I wonder about Great Britain. I might be able to live there. Or Ireland.

For me it has more to do with their snakes.

Australia is out for me, too. Even though I love the way they talk, I can't be living somewhere with all those snakes.

Do not disregard - if it will be bad in US, it will be much much worse everywhere else. Not to offend Canadians, but doesn't Canada prosper mostly because of being protected by uncle Sam's back? Don't know anything about Australia though. But while there is a crisis in America, guess where the prices for food and utilities raising - in Europe, they don't share. Don't under-estimate the kindness of Americans, they maybe are spoiled rotten and fat, but nobody else except Americans will help you in the moment of tragedy or famine, not Europeans, not Canadians, not Australians, not Russians. Germans? - You have to be really kidding. Have you heard Canada or Australia did anything for anyone, for hunger relieve, or military help, and so on? ... Just Americans and British. Not politically speaking at all, just that's the way it always was since 1st World war and now days. Now you can bang me. There is no better land than America and there is no better nation than Americans. God bless!

As an American citizen, I'm offended. Wow!

Oh, and to the answer the question, maybe Costa Rica. My niece and her dh have been in Nicaragua for 9 years, so we might visit them. They've built a lovely straw bale house on 10 acres. Of course, I'd have to learn how to spell it since my first 3 tries were wrong. On the other side, I would vote Ireland cause I've always envisioned a lovely little white cottage surrounded by all that beautiful green with a local pub where all the villagers gather in the evening. You know, like Waking Ned Devine.

Are there truly no snakes in Ireland? Or is that legend?

Because that would make Ireland the perfect choice for me. And I like the way the Irish talk, too. I like little cottages surrounded by green countryside. Of course I don't want to live in the part of Ireland depicted in Angela's Ashes, or The Magdaline Laundries.

Nobody has said my choice: Sweden. Of course, it's like übersocialist, so maybe that's why.

After that we have anywhere in the British isles. I also wouldn't mind Canada, except for the cold thing.

I think those of us with large families might get permission to move to European countries in the interest of repopulating them.

The US doesn't just let people come here when things get tough at home, and I would assume other countries have similar rules. My guess is that the more attractive a country is for immigration, the stricter the rules are. After all, they don't want people like us coming and taking up land and jobs - I would assume.

I would love to live abroad again, though I couldn't leave my aging parents or MIL to do it at this point. But I can't really imagine deciding that problems we have created in this country are too great so I should leave, and then expect that that leave would be easy.

You're really a "glass is half empty" kind of gal, aren'tcha?

Anyway, I lived in Texas for about 7 years as a child. I have fond memories of it. I could live there again, I think. Or somewhere in the UK. Whichever.

I could envision three options; Japan, Australia and Britain. Japan because dh and dss are all fascinated with it and are learning the language. Although I enjoy sushi, I would have serious issues with food, language and culture. Australia because our worldview and culture is similar, and I can see growing to love the country. Britain because I've spent a significant amount of time there, am familiar with the geography, and of course the language. I'd also be willing to fight in the coming British revolution. I'm not sure that either the Japanese or British would be willing or able to take us, so ~ Austraila is the lucky winner. :D

Why do people keep saying Canada is cold? It is not cold. It is not cold.

I tell myself that every day, and every day it becomes a little bit more true.

Yeah, but I think Colorado is cold!

I love it and can't really think of anywhere else I'd rather live.

Maybe we could just travel around the world, homeschooling as we go.

(yes this is a fantasy, but I choose to take the question in that manner)

I would love to live in Denmark (from what I have read) but I would wither-away due to a lack of sun and warmth. I just can't do cold much anymore. Shoot, I think Atlanta is cold in the winter... Boy how my once Northern blood has thinned.

You are sadly misinformed. Have a look at this, for example. Canadians have been in Afghanistan since 2002. Canadian peace keepers are renowned for shipping out as needed around the world. Our 14th Prime Minister, Lester B. Pearson, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957 for proposing peace keeping activities in the Middle East.

Same with Canada. We're in recession but it's nothing like what's going on in the US or Europe.

Yes and as pointed out the Canadian military has been tending the mess in Afghanistan for years now, with continued committment just announced again recently. Our military may be much smaller, but we give and give and give of it to the fullest of our capabilities. To say we do nothing is just so... egregious.

well, I supposed it's to be expected in a way, since Canadians don't generally go around the world saying "hey! look at me! look at me! I'm saving your a$$! You OWE me!"

Ok, you get the "Ignoramus of the Week" award. America is made of dirt just like every other continent and Americans are made of flesh and blood, just like everyone else. You need to brush up on your history and read world news. Did you know that Australia sends fire fighters to California when you Americans have it bad?

Haven't read the book, now I want to :) I would imagine he talks about our economy being based on primary resources instead of manufactured goods? It is still required to have a patron or enough money to live on for two years. You can't get welfare or Medicare until you've been here two years. Some jobs require applicants to be citizens or permanent residents, but they are mainly government jobs. All other jobs are open to anyone who is here legally, and if you look hard enough you'll find jobs if you're here illegally...

Sorry, I won't leave my mom. Period. Ever. Until she is 6 feet under or agrees to move with me, I am where I am.:)

However, if she were to leave with us, shouldn't we pick from the happiest countries list? Denmark , Puerto Rico, Colombia, Iceland, N. Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Switzerland, Netherlands, Canada, Austria

This list is from this summer so I guess it could have changed since then, but any from this list would do. Dh has relatives and friends in the Netherlands, so I guess we should look into going there. However, Puerto Rico is a lot closer and a lot warmer.

OTOH- we have nothing of particular value to offer another country, so I don't know why they would take us.

You can live in Southern BC. They barey get snow there. But heck, Sweden is at least as cold as us and much colder then some parts of Canada.

We're getting a bum rap on this climate thing!

I don't live in the states - but if I had to leave Canada for some reason, I'd want to go somewhere totally different than here...I don't know where though... maybe Russia? That would be kinda cool. :)

I'd love to live in the Northern US if I had to leave Canada, but then they're sort of Canada Lite anyway. :D

I would go to Switzerland in a heartbeat. I went there years ago on a European tour, and still remember the people being just so friendly, as well as the scenery being breathtaking. I would love to live in a simple chalet and listen to my little goats ring their bell collars outside on the greenest grass you've ever seen.

UPDATE...

Ooop! I've just learned that homeschooling is illegal there, so I'll have to withdraw my vote!

My goodness! Who piddled in our Post-Toasties this morning?

To all the non-US board members: I do so apologize. Please know that not all Americans are egocentric and tactless. In fact, there are very few rotten apples among us, but one or two can make the whole bushel stink!

To answer the OP: Well.... Since Lake Ontario is practically in my backyard, I think the choice is obvious- get in a boat and start paddling! :D In all seriousness, if a disaster forced us to relocate, and I was allowed to choose, I'd probably choose Canada. But the idea of a quaint village in the English countryside- as mentioned by a previous poster- sounds awfully nice. Still, if several thousand Americans set up shop there, it would no longer be quaint or a village, so that kind of kills that idea!

I just hope I never have to make that kind of decision!

Switzerland does not allow homeschooling. It is illegal period. That is why no one is choosing it.
