  1. From Henry V WESTMORELAND O that we now had here But one ten thousand of those men in England That do no work to-day! KING. What's he that wishes so? If we are mark'd to die, we are enow To do our country loss; and if to live, The fewer men, the greater share of honour. God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more. By Jove, I am not covetous for gold, Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost; It yearns me not if men my garments wear; Such outward things dwell not in my desires. But if it be a sin to covet honour, I am the most offending soul alive. No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England. God's peace! I would not lose so great an honour As one man more methinks would share from me For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more! Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host, That he which hath no stomach to this fight, Let him depart; his passport shall be made, And crowns for convoy put into his purse; We would not die in that man's company That fears his fellowship to die with us. This day is call'd the feast of Crispian. He that outlives this day, and comes safe home, Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd, And rouse him at the name of Crispian. He that shall live this day, and see old age, Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours, And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian.' Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars, And say 'These wounds I had on Crispian's day.' Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot, But he'll remember, with advantages, What feats he did that day. Then shall our names, Familiar in his mouth as household words- Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter, Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester- Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red. This story shall the good man teach his son; And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by, From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remembered- We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition; And gentlemen in England now-a-bed Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.
  2. Nothing, but then again I do not charge them for food and board so assistance around the house is expected. I would deem it a poor precedent were I to pay children for assisting with the upkeep of the house.

  4. I am most glad to see that the Mt Vernon Ladies Association won the volume. It goes to a place that it belongs. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/06/22/george-washington-personal-copy-constitution-ready-to-hit-auction-block/
  5. Just about anything by the incomparable Kipling. Gunga Din and If or course there is also Shelly and Prometheus Unbound To suffer woes which Hope thinks infinite; To forgive wrongs darker than death or night; To defy Power, which seems omnipotent; To love, and bear; to hope till Hope creates From its own wreck the thing it contemplates; Neither to change, nor falter, nor repent; This, like thy glory, Titan, is to be Good, great and joyous, beautiful and free; This is alone Life, Joy, Empire, and Victory.
  6. I admit that I also listed community service but what does one do when they refuse? What does one do when the assigned task is not performed or performed badly? You speak about "heavy handed adult supervision" but these children may be too far gone. They have lost respect for adults. Now a 200 lb ex Marine (and that type) may be able to put the fear of God into them but that is because of the implied threat of violence. It is easy to say well "I would explain to them" but I am not sure that it is not too late for that.
  7. Well, it did work, we had remarkably few problems. Students were polite, homework was done, we learned what we were supposed to and frankly the school was a great place to be. Everything that American public schools are frequently not! As to the other part of your comment.....beyond it being simply ludicrous, you realize that you are now accusing all parents who spank a 10 year old of sexual assault as well as groups like the Government of Singapore . It is no wonder that many people smirk (or openly laugh) at psychobabble when comments such as that are made. You really argue that a father who spanks his 10 year old is sexually assaulting him? How about if the boy is 9years, 11 months and 28 days? You know how very insulting you are being towards the parents of many on this board as well as many posters and frankly how very very silly.
  8. I went to a school where 15 year olds faced corporal punishment.....believe me it worked. I also remember the case of Michale Fay (18 and caned in Singapore for theft and vandalism.........one thing about Singapore....there is not much vandalism http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/singapore-lashes-out-at-caning-critics-1372049.html). What was ridiculous was all the hand-wringing in the States over this, kid got exactly what he asked for. I think a spanking for these punks would be well deserved.
  9. They can be made to apologize, but it will mean nothing. The vicious cruelty exhibited by those on the bus excludes any ability for commiseration or feeling for their victim. What is a little scary is that people seem to believe that if the kids say sorry that they mean it. Are we that gullible?
  10. The truth is that your children would not behave like this. What was seen on the bus was the result of decades of coddling, of telling children "You are special", of refusal to adhere to basic standards of morality, of abandoning any standards of behavior, of removing all threat of punishment, of psychobabble rather than parenting, of screeching every time a parent spanks his child, of condemning the good kids when they stand up to the bad ones. This is the world that the "experts" demanded when they decided that they knew better than a parent how to raise children, when psychobabble became the norm. These kids do not need a counselor, they will never understand why they were wrong, all that we can hope for is that when they leave school fear of real punishment will keep them from straying....but that is, alas, a forlorn hope. Of course this is a wider problem, it is not just the way we raise children but society as a whole that faces enormous problems. A society that also refuses to maintain standards, that expects someone else to take responsibility for one's every need, that has discarded personal responsibility and accountability, that makes excuses for outrageous behavior.....well what did we really expect?

  12. 1. We need corporal punishment back. 2. There has always been scum in schools but when I went through there were also large numbers of good kids. We would have stepped in (after we recovered from the shock, such a thing was inconceivable back then). Of course today smacking one of those punks around would get the good student in trouble. ....of course we (the taxpayer) will be keeping them in welfare or prison for years to come. Yet another PS success story!!!
  13. Without a doubt.....rabbit. If you do not like it you can always eat it, rabbits are tasty :-)
