Best Pirate Party Ideas?
BritAnnia replied to Old Dominion Heather's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Write up a bunch of pirate nametags and each child gets one as the party begins. ie:For a boy named Billy - Blackbeard Billy. Birthday boy is Captain "child's name". Everyone must talk like a pirate, including parents. Even better if parents are cabin boys for the day, doing the Captain's bidding :) Treasure hunt for sure... all together or in teams. X marks the final spot but have the map lead to a few places where extra clues are found before finding the X. Sandboxes are fun for hiding treasure. Peg-leg relay race. Really just hopping to a certain point and back again. With a parrot on their shoulder? Even better! Depending on how messy you want to get... two sailing ships cut out of cardboard, one for each team to hide behind. Water balloon "Cannon ball" fight. -
So much for facebook privacy
BritAnnia replied to melmichigan's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I didn't know about having the info removed. I only knew about the site because my dh showed it to me. His info is totally screwy. No wonder we get weird promotional junk mail. Currently his info lists him under his mother's name (female version of his name but clearly a female name), and wrong ethnicity. Oh, and Dh's brother's house 1/4 mile away also comes up under MiL's name. She's a strong marketing draw apparently! -

The odds are well in your favour. I've had a kidney infection misdiagnosed as viral infection and ended up in hospital for almost a week. Weird thing was I did not have any back pain at all, just extremely high fever, chills, couldn't keep even a sip of water down for days. That's the main reason I ended up in hospital, the dehydration. You're drinking a lot of water and already on meds so you'll be fine! Hope you feel better soon.

So, what brain dead thing did you do today?
BritAnnia replied to Brigitte's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Fed the dog and cats their evening meal by preparing the wet food as usual and carrying it all to the back porch where the animals were waiting. Set down the dog's food, gave him the signal to eat, filled his water bowl, filled the cats' water bowl, filled their dry food dish, stepped over to the dryer to check the timer, then walked back into the kitchen... with the cats' wet food bowl still in my hand. No wonder the poor cats had been extra frantic in their meowing tonight. :tongue_smilie: -
I wouldn't choose a greyhound with a cat in the home. My brother adopted a rescue greyhound years ago. It was a beautiful dog, had to be taught to play, unfortunately it did catch a few cats in it's day :(

Addi or KP for my next knitting needles?
BritAnnia replied to PeterPan's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Thanks for the feedback. As I already have the KP Options it looks like I can step up and go with Addi's next time. I always find for new projects I want to use a needle that's already in use so having two or more of my most used sizes would be wonderful. -
Addi or KP for my next knitting needles?
BritAnnia replied to PeterPan's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I prefer a sharper point to my needles and I like the KP's. The one Addi circular I have is a #2 and not as pointy as the KP#2. Would that Addi be a lace point or...? I didn't realize they had different sharpnesses. A set of interchangeable pointier Addi's might be finding it's way to my gift wish list ;) -
Addi or KP for my next knitting needles?
BritAnnia replied to PeterPan's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Not read the previous posts so I may be repeating someone else here. ETA: Okay, now that I have read through the previous posts I see I am in the minority. :tongue_smilie: I have the KP metal options set and I love them. I also have some of the KP metal DPN's and smaller sized fixed cable circulars. I have one Addi smaller size fixed circular and though I like it, I much prefer the sharper point on the KP needles. I drive my Dh a bit nuts by insisting on saying at least once a week "I looooooove you, bed!" as I snuggle in for the night. I honestly do love love love it ever since I got the memory foam mattress topper about 10 years ago. We have the one from Costco, though I think the ones they sell now may be an inch thicker than our old one.

Anyone make (homemade) ground sausage?
BritAnnia replied to Halftime Hope's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I did some about a year ago using a couple of recipes from this site. http://forum.sausagemaking.org/ I forget exactly which ones I used, (I took notes and promptly lost them).... a hot italian (good), a rosemary one (too salty), and an English (bit bland). I learned the reason English sausages are so different from American sausage is because it's ground so much finer, almost to a paste. That was a huge deal for me because I just can't afford the mail-order English sausages at $8 per lb, plus $50 shipping! I haven't tried using rusk or any skins yet. I recently bought more pork to have another go once I find my scribbled notes from the first time. HTH -
s/o swimming threads - do you remember learning?
BritAnnia replied to fivetails's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We took swimming lessons at school. Our little infant and junior school had it's own old bus which was a very special thing at the time. We'd bus the mile or so to the comprehensive school's swimming pool to take our weekly lessons. There would be so many weeks of lessons and then awards were given in the form of a small coloured patch of fabric. I forget the exact colouring but each colour symbolized the distance swum. (Is swum a word?) ie: Red for one width of the small pool, yellow for one length, etc. The fabric patches were usually sewn directly onto the bathing suit and we were all very proud of them :) -
s/o Older kids and Bedwetting
BritAnnia replied to funschooler5's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We tried a variety of things, none worked. GP's and pediatric specialists all said the same thing, "He'll grow out of it." and he did. Puberty kicked in and no more problems since. -
I wanted to make something very similar to these for Christmas gifts in 2009. Would you believe I could not find any nice beads at any of the usual craftstores? It's all ready-made necklaces or bags of teeny tiny seed beads. If ever I stumble across a store that sells nice beads I'm going to be buying a small supply because I think the finished bookmarks are just lovely.

Irish twins while nursing?
BritAnnia replied to Meriwether's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My sister's first two children are just 10 months apart. Both were surprise pregnancies, the first happened when she was on the pill and the second so soon after giving birth/while nursing. -

Here's a link to my knitting album on photobucket. You can view a slideshow here... I hope! (Please let me know if the link doesn't work. It should be set for public viewing but PB can be such a bear to navigate I may have muddled a setting somewhere.) -

' Lion Brand is often on sale at places like Jo-Ann, Michaels, ACMoore. Whether I'm buying yarn from there or online, I always try to get a sale price. I'm also still a newb at knitting. I find learning and trying different yarn brands and blends is as fun as trying different techniques and patterns. -

Not sure of adding my input here as I just bought yarn that sells for $50 a skein. Now to find the perfect project that is also within my ability level so I don't mess it up! WEBS is currently having a sale, even backordered sale items will be sold at sale price. http://www.yarn.com I also like Knitpicks and Dizzysheep (great for smaller orders because shipping is only $1). http://www.knitpicks.com and http://www.dizzysheep.com A few sites I have bookmarked but have not yet ordered from... http://www.discontinuedbrandnameyarn.com/ http://www.discountyarnsale.com/default.cfm http://www.elann.com/Commerce.Web/ http://www.littleknits.com/ (eta: another link) hth -
How did your husband propose to you?
BritAnnia replied to wy_kid_wrangler04's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I just love reading through these stories. Dh and I had been dating for 17months, however 8 months of that time he was stationed in North Dakota while I was home in the UK. At the time my parents did not have a home phone (and this was before cellphones), so I'd call him collect from a public phone at work and we wrote A LOT of letters! I was planning a trip to visit him and was to book my flights that very day, we'd talked about in the weeks beforehand sorting out the details. Early that morning my brother stopped by my house and told me 'dh' had phoned him and wanted me to call first thing. First thing meant lunchtime for me which was 6am in ND. I didn't think all that much of the request. It was a little unusual but I was excited to be buying my tickets to visit him and thought it was regarding that. So at luncthime I call and in a sleepy voice he first asked me if I'd bought the tickets yet. I hadn't. He jumped right into it... "Don't get them, I was thinking we should get married instead." Erm... okay! And that was the entire proposal. A collect call while I was at work and he was half asleep, 4000 miles away... how romantic! We celebrate 22 years this June :001_wub:
