Today Show firing

Dh watches BBC and Sky. He likes because there's less celebrity stuff (until this week when the royal engagement was announced) they do local stuff sometimes. I remember noticing my dh was watching news about a traffic jam in Surrey. That was definitely not going help dh commute to work in the DC metro area.

The down side is I have to inform dh about what's happening in our state, county, town, etc.

I liked Matt as NBC comes on after our local news, so it was the one we watched.  I liked his delivery style and the camaraderie the group had.  I wouldn't even have recognized Charlie Rose.  We don't watch the other news channels.

It's still frustrating with just how common this behavior has been and how long it has stayed hush hush among so many.  It should have all come out back when it happened (preventing future occurrences), but who knows how society would have treated it then I suppose.

There's a certain irony that he was the anchor breaking or discussing these stories over the last few weeks.

During the election when the story broke with the ET tapes from years ago and Billy Bush was fired he covered that too.

Kinda makes one wonder how many other folks out there are wondering how long they have left, no?

Not just TV or politics, but also in Universities or workplaces.

https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/harvey-weinstein-scandal/amp/nbc-news-fires-today-anchor-matt-lauer-after-sexual-misconduct-n824831

I’m to the point where I pretty much assume that everyone I see on tv is either a perpetrator or a victim of harassment.

I have mentioned this before...But I read a book called "Age of Sex Crime" when I was pregnant with oldest. And the one of the premises was that everyone in (our) society is either a victim or perpetrator.

Interesting book but wrong time for me to read it!

(Worse than reading Silence of the Lambs when driving alone cross-country!)

First comment I read on the FB news story blamed women for being overly sensitive and ruining all these fine men. Grrrr.

It's really funny.  There have been so many of these incidents, but THIS one is the one getting to people... I have two women I know (who are politically conservative) openly talking about all this being a witch hunt.  Silence when it was politicians.  But I guess, the whole premise of morning TV is that you invite these people into your home so it feels more personal.

Have y'll read this?

https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/harvey-weinstein-scandal/weinstein-here-s-growing-list-men-accused-sexual-misconduct-n816546

It has the list of guys accused.   At this moment, I am pretty sure that George Lucas is innocent of this stuff.   A long time ago, the Princess Leia actress talked about how he was 'sexually unpersuadable'.   Everyone else has a ? mark by their name.

Gotta wonder what's in their closet...

Sadly, the comment was from a woman blaming women for ruining another fine man. Between FB comments and my own mother’s archaic comments, I’m done with this day already.

When I heard about this when I got up today, I figured NBC was looking for something new & fresh so they could say they acted right away - but that they probably knew about his actions previously.

It is all okay until it starts losing you money. GRR!

Yeah. If you recall Billy Bush was fired tapes showing him with a celebrity who later became a candidate and president. Billy Bush was participating in a vulgar conversation, not actually leading. I'm not condoning such conversations. The person he had the conversation with -- more vulgar conversant -- was elected.

I suspect NBC has known about the Matt Lauer thing a while. They are putting it out as a one off they learned about last night. My guess is last night they learned there was serious evidence that could not be covered up. Evidence the likely makes the whole NBC organization look bad. A swift firing is done to keep others from looking deeper and seeing more.

I think this is it.  One gets the feeling that they know them better.  Folks (like me) might like their personality or they may not (as others have stated), but it's more than just the typical politician or basic "someone" out there.  Obviously we don't know these people when they aren't behind the screen or in photos, but we think we do.  Perhaps it's more like a co-worker or someone you knew at church or a club or similar.  You thought you knew someone, but you didn't.

There are plenty of women who find nothing at all wrong with this sort of behavior.  There are some women who do similar things to men they get attracted to.  It's nothing new.  The story of Joseph back in Genesis in the Bible tells of something similar from the female side.

President Donald Trump noted Lauer's firing on Twitter, writing, "Wow, Matt Lauer was just fired from NBC for 'inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.'

Taken from the article.

Did this piss anyone else off?

It always pisses me off when he speaks up on these things, including that he was able to continue in the election - and folks voted for him knowing his past behavior, esp the part caught on tape.  But that goes back to my answer to the previous quote.  Not everyone (even women) consider this inappropriate.  That's life.

I'm glad the tide has changed personally.

The rest of the tweet was asking when top execs at Comcast and NBC would be fired for putting out fake news. So the more offensive thing to me is that he just used the Lauer news to push his fake news campaign.  The woman (women?) Lauer harassed is nothing to Trump.

"Hello, Pot. Meet Kettle."

He has commented on every sexual behavior story. I feel like he's trying, belatedly, to deflect.

I have to wonder if this was an excuse for them to redo the horrible 9 am hour. Put MK in his slot for the morning. Matt has been rumored for years of multiple affairs and he had one expensive contract so why now. This would give a convenient way to move her without saying how she failed her that hour. Money talks. Considering how NBC handled Ann and Tamara......

In case people missed this, the New Yorker did a big article on Trump's accusers. https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/listening-to-what-trumps-accusers-have-told-us

The harasser in chief is indeed trying to deflect and alter reality.

& also maybe we should stop hiring men until we figure out what is going on?

I suspect it’s more like there were multiple stories from other news outlets about to break and NBC wanted to get ahead of the story so that they can come out as the good guy instead of the under the rug sweeping, turn a blind eye, enabler.

They'd be crazy to MK in there. I think they are trying to figure out what to do with her. The ratings for 9 am tanked from the first week she started. I think they will find another man. The 7 am  and 8 am hours have mostly been a male anchor/host and female anchor/host:

Matt and Savanah

Matt and Ann

Katie and Matt

Bryant and Katie

Jane and Bryant

I would like to see them being back Willie to the weekday show.

I know sexual assault has existed forever, but I think widespread pornography consumption is contributing to the problem. Charlie Rose was quoted as saying, "I always felt that I was pursuing shared feelings, even though I now realize I was mistaken." Pornography effects the way men view women and treat them and encourages this idea that women somehow want or are encouraging this kind of behavior in men.

The USA gymnastics doctor isn’t mentioned either.

These stories just make me sick to my stomach for the victims. All victims, even if it wasn’t someone “famous” who harmed them.

He is one sick puppy who should rot in jail!

Preying on under-age girls (or boys) is sickening!

No offense to unsinkable, but I think that's a ridiculous premise.  There are oodles of people who are neither.

The comments on the Today Show Facebook post make me sad. The number of people who don’t seem to understand that it would have to be very bad, and corroborated for NBC to fire someone with such a big contract is really surprising. I agree with those who’ve said the network has probably known about improper behavior for a long time, and in the current climate couldn’t afford to hide it anymore.

NBC is run by chickens. They are firing Lauer now because they know through their "internal investigation" that his accuser is the first among many victims and they want to show the stock holders that they are taking immediate and decisive action. This is the same network that refused to carry Ronen Farrow's news piece on Harvey Weinstein because Harvey's lawyers called the NBC bosses to stop it being broadcasted. Ronen ended up taking his story to the New York Times as he reports. NBC is not as nice a network with journalistic integrity as they claim to be. I am a big NBC watcher and after seeing Farrow's interview about NBC's reluctance to act on his investigation, I have stopped watching them. I watch BBC and PBS now for news.

What is most stunning to me is it often seems to me (emphasis on "seems") that those with the most to lose are the ones who behave the worst.  I don't get that.  It's like I dunno is there some sort of extra thrill in it or are they extra stuck on themselves and think they are invincible?

Huh.....I am not a perp or a victim......so there is one.

But I am glad to see more speaking out!
