fairfarmhand
died this morning. We're not sure why, but it was mercifully quick. Perhaps colic brought on by a sudden weather change? Dh took her to the Ag center for necropsy and disposal. And I have a very droopy 13 yo girl. We have other horses, but Abby was her first and she was very sweet and very special. We're all pretty teary. School's out for the day.
Happy
Oh my, I'm so sorry. Hugs all around. Losing my horse was devastating for me...and I was a grown woman who had buried her parents. Hugs, hugs, hugs.

fairfarmhand
It happened so quickly. The vet didn't even make it. She was fine last night, then this morning, she was pitiful. She wanted out of the barn; When I let her out she walked out front where the other horses were, seemed like she wanted to see them, and then walked back out by the barn, lay down, and died. It was almost like she knew she was dying and wanted to say goodbye to our gelding who was her special friend. I'm glad it was quick;
creekland
:grouphug: I hate losing ours. We raise them to sell, and selling is rewarding as I know they are going to good homes, but when they die... I just hate it. You have my sincere sympathy and more :grouphug: . fairfarmhand
Abby died of a ruptured cecum (intestine). She was old and her teeth weren't the greatest, so chewing fibrous matter wasn't so easy for her. Apparently that created a 10 inch mass in her digestive system which tore open, leading to peritonitis. She was kind of dehydrated, which made it worse. I know when it got cold, she hated to drink water. From both the vet and the dr who did the necropsy, there really was nothing that could've been done. Even if the vet had arrived in time, the survival rate of the surgery she would've needed was like 5%, and more than likely would have just prolonged her dying process. So despite the sadness, my dd and the rest of us feel a little bit better about it, knowing that we did what could be done, she died quickly, and she had a happy life. Liz CA
So sorry. If you haven't disposed of him yet, go here http://imsilver.com/ and have a bracelet made. Maybe you could call and have them cut some tail hair. I was very thankful that the vet suggested to cut a piece of the forelock off when I had to put my gelding down. I was too distraught to think about it but now I am glad I have it.
