Life is hectic and I'd like to relax with a pot of tea all week and fold/iron laundry. :)

So can you think of any movies that are slow, quiet, peaceful, or intense but kind of quiet and slow ;), anything along that vein?

For example

Strangers in Good Company

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102993/

Enchanted April

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101811/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Andromeda Strain

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066769/combined

Thanks!

go for oldies - they took time to develop the story.

one of my favorites - the Philadelphia story with cary grant, Katharine Hepburn, and jimmy stewart.  lots of witty repartee.

you might also like it happened on fifth avenue - which is actually a Christmas movie I saw this season for the first time, and it is a keeper.

It isn't fiction but the french documentary To Be and To Have is slow and engaging. It is about a one room schoolhouse in France. We really, really liked it, and recommend it often. But, we always have to warn people that it is a bit slow.

Pretty in Pink

Say Anything

Any movie directed by Whit Stillman. Nothing seems to happen, but when it is done it feels like everything happened but you aren't quit sure what, lol. I have seen Barcelona and Metropolitan.

How Green Was My Valley, 1941

Since You Went Away, 1944

Nice, slow character development.  These are two of my favorite older movies.  Not sure how quiet you'll think they are.

ETA: I also like Life With Father.

Andromeda Strain? I remember it well, and it was very intense! Great movie!

This one might be too intense, but the soundtrack is lovely: The Mission

Yes, this movie is far too intense to be classified as "quiet and slow", but the theme music is "Nella Fantasia" and is very restorative.

Here's a youtube link to Chloe from Celtic Woman, singing it with her dad playing the oboe in the background.  :)

Another quiet and slow movie:  Ladies in Lavender with Judi Dench & Maggie Smith.

Jane Austen adaptions are my "restorative" movie genre of choice, however.

Barry Lyndon. Not my favorite, but the director invented a special camera to shoot in candle light...

Man from Snowy River. Just kidding. (I've never been able to get thru that one--it's not only slow, it's BORRRING.)

That one with Brad Pitt that takes place over years and years--ummmm...oh yes--Legends of The Fall (it's my go-to Se2y Brad movie).

I see two versions of Persuasion - 1995 and 2007. Which do you prefer? (I prefer as close to the book as possible.)

1995!

Movies I recommend:

On a Clear Day (not on a Clear Day You Can See Forever)

Waking Ned Divine

Calendar Girls (might be not as slow as you want, but such a great movie!)

Pride and Prejudice (the BBC miniseries and the 2005 movie)

Billy Elliot

The Notebook (don't judge me!)

The Help

The Secret Life of Bees

Oh we love The Secret Life of Bees! Love!

We just watched Nebraska on dvd from Netflix. It has some bad language, but it is an excellent character-driven movie. Even my 14 year old daughter liked it. I also just watched Becket on Netflix streaming. I recently read a biography about Eleanor of Aquitane and wanted to learn more about that period. It was really slow moving.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Some I've seen, many I haven't. I'll be loading up my queue tonight and putting a few movies on hold at the library. :)

just watched Kon Tiki this week. It was good and slow.

The Sheltering Sky was a quiet and slow movie if I remember right.

I can't remember what it's called, but there's some documentary on Netflix that follows a bunch of monks who have taken a vow of silence. It was interesting, but it doesn't get much slower and more peaceful than silent monks. ;)

Into the Great Silence.

It took 16 years between the time the monks were asked to be filmed and the time when the monks finally said, "Yes, you can film."

I'll second A River Runs Through It.  If you can stand to sit through it.  I remember watching it thinking, "Now, it's going to get going."  ........."Now, something's going to happen."  ......."Maybe NOW."  Nope, nothing ever happened.

I like movie like that sometimes. Almost painful to get through. :)

I watched The Horse Whisperer for the first time last month. That was a snoozer. But I liked it!

I've been meaning to watch A River Runs Through it. For like, 20 years...  Hmm... I wonder what year that came out?

Two I was going to mention -- Babette's Feast and A Room with a View -- were mentioned. Oh, and Ushpizin and Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Love those!

What about

Driving Miss Daisy

Quartet (Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, et al.)

High Noon (suspenseful, but slow)

Waking Ned Devine (leisurely until the climax)

Foreign and older and mini-series were good suggestions. Oh, these are NOT to be missed:

The Shop around the Corner

Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949; Alec Guinness plays 8 different parts)

The Ladykillers (1955, w/Peter Sellers and Alec Guinness)

Much Ado about Nothing (Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Keanu Reeves)

Arsenic and Old Lace (Cary Grant)

Oooh -- Roman Holiday (Audrey Hepburn)

Twelve Angry Men

Mr Smith Goes to Washington
