Catwoman
I hope you got the flight and are there with your son. I had to read your post three times before "typhoid fever" sunk in! I couldn't even imagine that as a possibility. I hope the doctors make the right diagnosis and that they are able to treat your son quickly and successfully so he can make a complete recovery ASAP. Praying here. :grouphug:
idnib
If it makes you feel any better, my mom had typhoid fever when she was young. She recovered without intervention and went on to have the immune system of a goddess. She gets sick once every 15 years or something. More seriously, I'm sending good energy and hugs. Crimson Wife
Typhoid fever I believe is a bacterial infection (a type of salmonella IIRC), so hopefully he will respond well to antibiotic treatment. Just Another Jen
Just a quick update before I head back in.When we go here we were surprised to find him in the isolation section of the icu. We have to gown, glove, and mask. He has a 104 degree fever that will go down for a hour or so and then back up to 104/105. His white blood cells are so low they can't give ibuprofen and he maxxed out on tylonol yesterday. We've been packing him with ice. He is hallucinating (which later will be hilarious) um let's see. Liver enzymes high also. Tge tests for typhoid and malaria take days to come back- like until wednesday. So they have iv fluids going and a antibiotic. No water because his salt level is low. This is my very healthy crunchy western son. He is furious that a medical dr would tell him to drink gatorade when that is all chemicals sugar ajd artificials. He is vegan and cooks all his own foods. I went to whole foods last night and got him some fruit, hummus, and kumbocha. The docs don't want him drinking the kumbocha because they dont want to introduce more bacteria (even good ones) to his gut. They did want him to eat and drink so we are working on finding some foods that work. My DH took the overnight so I could get a nap. I'm headed back into the hospital now. Oh yeah and some background. He was in India from May until June before he headed back out to his park service job here in utah. He didn't get malaria shots this time, but had them 10 years ago when he was 13. So they are thinking he had partial immunity and that's why it so long to present- if it is malaria. I understand the Gatorade thing completely! If you have time, water, some honey, a pinch of sea salt and a bit of lemon juice will do the same as a Gatorade without all the junk. I use that when I do long runs and it works well.
