akmommy
I have one and really don't like the thing, but I'm left handed and for some reason I've never found a manual I can use comfortably. They make me feel as if I'm all thumbs. Thankfully we just don't eat a lot can goods anymore.
gardening momma
I grew up with only a manual can opener. When we got married, dh wanted an electric one (his mom had one). So we got an electric, and I got used to it (I still have a manual from before we met).
Daisy
I grew up with one...but never bought one myself. I don't like kitchen gadgets, expecially ones that take electricity, so that may play into it. I only open a can....once a week or so? So, why bother? :iagree:
stephanier.1765
I have an electric can opener. I did not realize I was in the minority. :tongue_smilie: Ditto. My parents had one and so it never occurred to me not to have one. It's lasted about 100 years...well, I could be stretching that a bit. MamaT
Mine is manual. I don't have a lot of counter space and can't see the point of taking it up with something I use once or twice a week.
Okra
To me the only reason for an electric can opener is if you have arthritis or some other reason it would be difficult to open a can.
mommymilkies
I don't know anyone with an electric. I remember trying one once (a house we rented had one preinstalled on the cabinet) and being scared to death of it.
Mejane
I have an electric one, but only use it when I'm opening many cans because I do have arthritis and my wrists hurt. Maybe once a year.
lionfamily1999
We use a "key."
Jennifer in NH
I have a manual one, but years ago(25) I had an electric can opener. I also had a very smart cat. That cat would put his chin on the top of the opener every.single.morning. at 5 am. It would wake me up. I got rid of that opener and vowed never to have one again unless I no longer had a cat. I still have cats, no electric can opener. Jenny
Parrothead
I have both, but the electric is the back up opener .
missmoe
Just the fact that you had to add the comment about the backup manual can opener explains why I don't have an electric one. ;)
Rhonda in TX
I got rid of my electric one years ago. I like being able to throw my manual opener in the dishwasher.
Lolly
We had an electric can opener. No one but me could get it to open cans. We now only have a manual. It IS easier to use.
elegantlion
http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-CO100B-Traditional-Multi-Purpose/dp/B001QVQ6IM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298598500&sr=8-1 this is mine. I got tired of buying a new can opener every couple months, but maybe I was just buying cheapies... Oh thank you. I'll look into this one. My dh does have carpal tunnel and my mom has arthritis in her hands, so maybe that why I'm used to people having them.
alpidarkomama
I don't own one, and I actually can't think of a single friend who owns one either! :)
Plucky
I only have a manual. In fact, we just wore our old one out & had to buy a new one. I like electric ones that go under the cabinet but I haven't been able to find one I like.
Dolphin
This makes me so much happier. I had a brief thought that I would show her this poll when she comes over next... but then I realized the poll won't matter to her. I asked a bunch of nutty homeschoolers, so of course they would all be strange like me:lol: (Have I mentioned that I am the ONLY one of my friends or family that homeschool)
RoughCollie
The poll results so far surprised me. I thought *everyone* had electric can openers. I guess I'm more high tech than I get credit for! :001_smile: When I read "a manual for back up", I thought the OP was referring to the owner's manual, especially since DH couldn't figure out how to use our electric can opener last night. I do have a couple of manual can openers in the camping box, though. Edited February 25, 2011 by RoughCollie
ereks mom
...and for several years now, we've only owned/used a manual can opener.
AngieW in Texas
I can't stand electric can openers. We got one as a wedding gift and I never could get it to work. It went to Goodwill. I like my Swing-Away manual can opener.
SailorMom
I like my manual one - I can throw it in the dishwasher. I have two, acutally - so that one can be in the dishwasher and i can have another one to use.

elinnea
I've always had a manual one. We have the kind that doesn't leave the sharp edges.
Jenny in Atl
Electric can openers are so 70's... I honestly don't know anyone with one. Maybe people who eat out of cans all the time?
Joyofsixreboot
It would take up space on my counter. Yuck
elise1mds
I *have* an electric can opener. It's attached to the underside of my kitchen cabinets. I hate it. I never use it, and since I store stuff in the corner of the counter near where it's attached, I'm constantly catching my hand on it. I'd like to get rid of it, but DH likes it. I use a manual can opener by choice.

~Tara~
We had an electric years ago, but always thought it'd be nice to have a manual around 'just in case'. That never happened until the electric broke. I refused to buy another for the few can I open and considering the trouble I had with the thing. I'm manual and I'm not going back!! (unless health required such) :D
Momma H
Had an electric. I just took up counter space and I don't open enough cans to justify.

Holly IN
I have manual. I do NOT miss the electric can opener. I got one for my wedding and hated hated hated it!! 2 years later I got a manual and loved it!! I can open any can very easily (big or small without fighting the can to fit into the electric one.) I will not go back to electric can opener. The manual frees up my counter. I can store in my drawer. No fighting the can with the opener. ;) Love my manual!!! Danestress
I remember seeing a few when I was a kid, but it seems dumb to me. Who can't just open a can? You need to take up counter space and burn fossil fuels for that?
dirty ethel rackham
I have my Pampered Chef manual opener that doesn't leave sharp edges. I haven't seen an electric that does that - but I haven't really looked either. But, alas, as my wrists get worse, I will either have to rely on my kids to open cans or find an electric one. KrissiK
I have no desire to have an electric can opener. I agree with the others - takes up space. My manual one works just fine!
Retired
I had one of the electric under the cabinet when they came out but stop using electric over a decade ago when I realized just how lazy America was getting. I do thing electric is great if someone has arthritis or some type of hand weakness.
4wildberrys
We had one growing up, but I have never wanted or needed one. I guess unless, like a pp said, you have arthritis and need the convenience of an electric----I personally think they are a ridiculous waste of counter space :tongue_smilie: Of course no offense to people that own them and like them :001_smile: And honestly, I don't think I know of ANYONE of my generation that owns one. I see them as one of those passing fancies of my parents generation.

ChristusG
We used to have an electric can opener. I despised that thing. It was difficult to clean, always splattered the contents of the can everywhere, and occasionally even DROPPED the can! That was a mess. I threw out the electric and love my manual. ChristusG
. For that reason, I unplug most kitchen appliances -- coffee maker, toaster, etc...-- unless I'm currently using them.) Thank you LOL! It drives my husband crazy that I unplug our toaster when I'm finished with it. He never does. I always come along behind him and unplug it when he's finished with it. He just thinks I'm paranoid!
