We school year around so this is what my 7 year old is doing right now-

Reading: She chooses any book she would like to read (she's working through the Magic Tree House series right now) and reads on her bed for a half hour before school every morning.

Bible: I Read -aloud the International Children's Bible

Math: MUS Alpha

Writing: Every other Monday I draw a shape in her note book. She then draws a picture using the shape as a starting point (this helps her imagination to get going). On the next page she writes a story about her picture. I don't require Grammar and Spelling to be correct in this. I just want her to get her thoughts on paper.

Spelling: Even though I don't require good spelling in her creative writing story, I do take her spelling list from the words she misspells in it. For that week and the next she writes these words, writes sentences for them, and looks them up in the Dictionary. It is great to see her improved spelling in her stories.

Grammar: R&S English 2 (not on Creative Writing day)

Copy work: Whatever I feel like have her do, usually a verse or poems.

History: While we take a break from SL (so that the girls can do Core 1 together). I have 30 of the Value Tales books. We are learning about 1 person a week. This week is -Ludwig van Beethoven.

Science: CL Nature Readers

Memorization: Awana

Art: once a week- Come Look With Me, draw

(Edit) Lots of Read-Alouds from the library (at night, before bed).

History: WP AS 1

Reading: He is way beyond phonics, so we'll just read books and use BJU Booklinks for comprehension

Rosetta Stone Spanish.. loosely for now

PE: Swimming and pe classes at the Y and co op

Music: co-op

WOW, that first list looks intimidating to me! I am not starting logic or latin until next year (3rd grade) so I am overwhelmed just thinking about it!

Latin will be just vocabulary words taken from GLA (because I will be using that with my 4th grader)...and only because she loves latin vocabulary. We are doing Song School Latin now and she really enjoys it, but she's not ready for any formal Latin study with grammar included in it. So we will just do some flash cards and games with the vocabulary words.

We haven't done any logic yet, and I originally thought I'd just introduce it to my upcoming 4th grader in the fall, but both of my kids like the looks of the Dandylion books. So once again, big brother is doing it so she just *HAS* to do it too...she is just like that! So I'm planning it, and seeing how it goes.

Likewise, everything except the Language Arts subjects and Math will be done with her older brother...so some of it is including her because she insists on it! :tongue_smilie:

We're debating about whether to homeschool our youngest or send her back to school next year.

If we keep her home, here's what we're likely going to use:

Grammar: First Language Lessons 1-2

Handwriting: Handwriting Without Tears My Printing Book

Phonics: Alpha Phonics & Explode the Code 1-2-3

History: A Child's History of the World

Science: Singapore Start Up Science

Math: Math-U-See Alpha & Singapore Math 1

Art: Artistic Pursuits K-3 Book 1

PE: Swimming & Little League Baseball

math: Singapore 2

grammar/writing: BJU 3

writing: Writing With Ease 2

spelling: Spelling Workout B

cursive: HWT Cursive Handwriting

history, reading, Bible, poetry: HOD Bigger Hearts

science: HOD Bigger Hearts, BJU 4, Apologia Astronomy

Spanish: co-op class

art: undecided

music: choir/drama through church

phys. ed.: swimming, tennis, skiing

I think that's it. We're not starting Latin until 3rd grade. She might also take an American Girls history class at co-op. We're heavy in science because they can't get enough, HOD will be done together at home, BJU is with another family, and Astronomy is reading at home, activities/labs at co-op.

My rising 1st and 2nd graders are combined in most areas, so we're using:

FLL 1&2 together (we're about 1/5th of the way through right now)

WWE 1 for my 1st grader, 2 for my 2nd grader

ETC 3-? (we've gotten a little lazy with that)

Spectrum Spelling, second half of 1 and beginning 2 for 1st grader, 2 for 2nd grader

Calvert Math (1 and 3)

Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding, along with lots of library books

Finish SOTW 1 (hopefully over the summer), and SOTW 2

Music and Art are still mostly random. The girls would like to start music lessons.

Reading books, reading books, and reading books

A few odds and ends from The Critical Thinking Company

Math: Singapore Primary Math 2A/2B, Rightstart games

Reading: selections from middle ages history a la TWTM, selections from SL, Ambleside year 2

Spelling: AAS finish level 2, and continue on

History: SOTW2 with AG

Science: REAL earth science, although I approach it with some trepidation. We tend to be more unschooly for science. I also have A Child's Geography vol. 1 which goes along well with the earth science.

Handwriting: quickly go through HWT second grade printing book and plan to start cursive mid-way through the year

Writing: WWE level 2 with workbook

Grammar: FLL2, also getting Evan Moor daily paragraph editing to supplement with

Music: start piano lessons, composer study

Art: continue with Artistic Pursuits and ad lib. , picture study a la Ambleside

Language: will try again with Spanish and am considering Rosetta Stone, vs. using what we already have, which isn't getting done.

Memory: continue with Bible selections and IEW's poetry program

Bible: continue reading through Vos and also the Bible; lots and lots of prayer; Bennett's Book of Virtues for character stories from time to time

I am afterschooling my now-first grade son (who turned 8 last month). I pretty much followed WTM, and this is my plan for 2nd:

Math: R&S 3 (still undecided though)

Grammer: FLL2

Writing: WWE2

Reading: books listed in Sonlight2

History: SOTW2 and AG, plus literature from middle ages

Science: Astronomy and Earth Science per WTM

Geography: world geography (focusing on physical geography, capitals, where countries are located)

Art/music/PE: hope to get involved with local HS groups

Unsure for spelling/phonics. My son was adopted from Kazakhstan when he was 4, and has some speech/language issues as well as borderline low phonological awareness (our PS doesn't teach phonics). He is going to an intensive phonological awareness program for 6 weeks this summer - we'll have to evaluate after that.

Oh Gee...i can't believe I am saying this but here goes....

We are using CLE across the board for Bible, Math, Reading, LA, Social Studies and Science. My little guys will do CLE 1 for the Bible, SS and Science and grade level for Math and Science.

I also plan to continue with Ambleside Online Year 1 for all of our read alouds, art, poetry, music etc.

I am working full time now, and need a real git it done plan...so I can have some fun sometimes with my kids. With CLE, I can work next to my kids (I work from home) and my bigger ones have no problem helping my little ones. We have been using AO Year one at bedtime for the past quarter and we are moving along nicely that way.

OY VEY...I have certainly changes gears this year...

Wendy,

Just a warning about MP's Christian Studies I. My dd, who admittedly is not the best at reading comp., had a very tough time with this in 3rd grade. Plus CSII was even tougher in 4th. I don't know if it is maturity, the New Testament or both but this year is the first she didn't routinely miss 70% of the comp ?s and flunk the tests. She's a smart cookie, but this was hard. It definately helps if you do all of the teaching helps. In the words of Mark Lowry, "I'm just tryin' to be a blessing." :001_smile:

I'm a brand-new homeschooler, never even thought about doing this three months ago but now here I am, even fresh from a homeschooling conference (ICHE, for any Illinois folks out there) with armloads of curriculum. My eldest turns 7 in July and we are turning to homeschooling in part because we are dismayed by how little he's learned in 1st grade in public school. Here is my tentative list:

Math: Math-U-See (Alpha), supplemented with Singapore IB, Right Start games, Calculadders

Language Arts: Classical Writing Primer, FLL; Spelling Power

Handwriting: New American Cursive

History, Geography, Science, Bible: My Father's World (Adventures)

Language: Prima Latina; weekly Chinese school

Music: piano lessons; occasional composer studies

Weekly co-op classes in art, computers, gym

Hoping there will be plenty of time for reading lots of living books and also to play and enjoy being a kid!

I'm loving these boards, they are becoming a lifeline for me!

DS will be 8 in December. So we are a little older.

LA......MOVING FROM OPGTR TO SING SPELL READ WRITE (got about half way through opgtr and have to give the book back to the charter school)

We will write fun sentences using words we have learned.......

We will write sentences mommy chooses to dictate to him.....throw in the basics of punctuation, capital letters etc.

Probably spelling tests this year based on the words we are learning.

Read books aloud to him (hopefully Sonlight selections)and then he can read to mommy........

MATH.....MUS finish alpha. we are working on subtraction then we will just move along into beta when we get there.

SCIENCE....Co-op class will be doing Apologia Land Animals and we will read and explore anything that sounds fun. He just loves to play in the dirt outside and harass the cats.

HISTORY.......Prairie Primer at Co-op class. Read the books during the week and do projects and discuss once a week a co-op. Other than that we will just read books about fun people that are interesting. Presidents, scientists etc.

I have dd 14 and dd 12 who need to share mommy so he's getting the layed back approach until 3-4th grade. Just LA and Math as my priority. Everything else will come.
