Thanks, this isn’t quite what I am looking for but it is good to see a secular option.

Is this course overtly religious? I prefer our science to be secular but am having a hard time finding a good, secular, online chemistry option. Thanks.

Maybe a good neuroscience program? I can always modify to meet what I am looking for. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Physiological Psychology
winoelle replied to winoelle's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I took the class, so I know what it entails, wasn’t looking to DE for it, more looking for resources for a high school version or something I can modify. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Physiological Psychology

This looks great, thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I was talking with my daughter about a course I took in college called Physiological Psychology and she would really like to do a class on this and I feel it is a good follow up to her other work this year. Has anyone seen a good textbook or better yet a course that is already out there to enroll her in? TIA

We were waitlisted for the charter shool my daughter wanted to attend for high school so now I am in planning mode to continue homeschooling for 9th grade. We were looking at the Big History Project as she has done two rounds of the 4 year cycle and doesn't want to do another. Has anyone used it as World History? We are doing a Biology with a lab, will it be too much science? Thanks!

MBtP The Story of Science- Newton in the Center
winoelle replied to BusyMom5's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
I am using this unit with my 7th grader this year. The unit only covers part of the book as it is only designed as a 3 week unit. For me these usually end up being more like 4 weeks. I purchased the student workbook and teacher guide that go with the book and plan to have more like a 12 week study with it. -
Or just do them side by side concurrently? I have Human Odyssey Volume 2 and Story of Science Newton, I want to do both tohether and they cover the same period of time, should I try to line them up or do you think I can just go through each in order? I have the teacher guide and student pages for Story of Science and plan to use them.

What are your favorite strategy board games?
winoelle replied to Sahamamama's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Pandemic is super fun with a group, so definitely try it! -
Or is it just me? I used their Level One books all the way through, then for 2 years we did Oak Meadow history and I loved it. This year, OM7 history was much less impressive to me so I looked around and settled on HO Early Modern with some supplementing. I downloaded it, printed it, and meh. There is not enough there. Then I read a thread mentioning teacher's guides, got excited, went to the site, and the only one out is Modern.....Why did they do the last book first? And it was released in 2011..So I emailed and asked if any more are planned and got the usual "depending on interest more could come". So no. This reminds me of waiting for the level 2 science to come out. Not sure why I come back to them so often, must just be because there is a lack of secular materials that meet my need, and Pandia comes sort of close...sometimes...but not really.

What are your favorite strategy board games?
winoelle replied to Sahamamama's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Lots of great ones already suggested that I won't repeat. We also love Tsuro and Agricola (the 2 player version). We watch Tabletop on Youtube and get a lot of ideas there. -
I agree with this, you can adapt it to fit your needs. We use History Odyssey and I don't like "The Story of Mankind". I use Human Odyssey and just align it and make adjustments I need. We do have both the Usborne and Kingfisher Encyclopedias and I do agree that Kingfisher is a bit more advanced and meatier.

Back order policy at RR - rant
winoelle replied to ...................'s topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
They aren't secretive about it, you can call and place your order and find out right away. It may be less convenient, but definitely not secretive. -
Back order policy at RR - rant
winoelle replied to ...................'s topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I guess I don't understand the big deal. It is a pretty reasonable policy and it isn't as if they hold your order indefinitely, just 5 days. If time is of the essence you can order over the phone. I just placed an order, got a backorder item notice the next day, called and cancelled that item (I am in a hurry) and we are good to go. The customer service has always been good and the shipping time reasonable. -
Oops! I forgot to teach cursive
winoelle replied to purplejackmama's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have never taken notes in cursive, it always slowed me down. I use cursive only occasionally as an adult.I didn't really teach it to my daughter, we sort of looked at it briefly, she can read it, sign her name, that's about it. -
Looking for middle school animal study
winoelle replied to Amanda's Mommy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
For our animal science semester we used these: Science Explorer Animal Science Wildlife Forensic Science Wildlife Detectives Elephant Scientist Wild Horse Scientist (a favorite) Plus a variety of other books from our library, including more scientist in the field books. We found plenty of rabbit trails to follow and really enjoyed the whole unit. -
How to plan and organize your school year by weeks or months?
winoelle replied to Bk4's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I use excel spreadsheets, each week has two sheets and each quarter is it's own workbook. On each sheet I have the days of the week across the top and the subjects down the side. I put room on the bottom of the first sheet for library books I need to request and on the second sheet for supplies I might need. This is my third attempt at my own planner and has worked well for two years now. I ptint it out each quarter and put it in my binder. I need a paper copy to work with, but like being able to add and switch things around without endless erasing. -
Looking for middle school animal study
winoelle replied to Amanda's Mommy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We loved WP Equine Science here. I haven'tseen a full curriculum around animals for middle. In 6th grade we did a long Animal Science unit and I built our literature around it as it was a main interest for dd. You could do something like that. -
We did Alice in Wonderland at that age and it is still one of dd12's favorites. I also started the Wizard of Oz series then, we did several and she finished on her own. I think we did Dragon in the Sock Drawer then too. I also recommend the Trelease book, it had several great book suggestions I wouldn't have thought of. Sometimes a book is wonderful to read to yourself and terrible to try reading aloud so the suggestions are useful.

7th Grade Science Subtopics of Earth Science
winoelle replied to winoelle's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
klwalukas, I like the looks of Building Math a lot, thank you! I am going to try to fit that in somewhere. fourcornersacademy, we tried Elemental Science for Chemistry and it wasn't a good fit. Too much jumping around and cutting and pasting, I think we lasted about a month with it before I switched to a high school text book and some other resources. I am definitely narrowing things down and have checked out books for some of the suggested topics from the library. -
7th Grade Science Subtopics of Earth Science
winoelle replied to winoelle's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
Thanks Targhee for the clarification of environmental vs. ecology, that is the direction I was thinking and that helps. Can you do oceanography if you don't live near any oceans?
