CalicoKat
and I can't do it. I called today to make the appointment and I started sobbing. I managed to say, "I'll call you back." But I can't. He's got a bad heart. He's "honking" alot today more and on Monday night he started waking up in the middle of the night coughing. I know I need to be a good doggy mommy. Dh's working really late today and he won't be home to help me out. My kid's are watching me sob and my baby is asking me if I'm hurt. Sammy dog has escorted me around my home for 11 years. He's a toe licker. He's a lap dog. He's got a basenji girl friend companion and she's going to be devastated too.

Or could he find a way to come home early today? This isn't something you should do on your own. You don't sound like you're in any shape to drive, or to deal with this all by yourself. I wish I lived near you. I would drive you and Sammy to the vet. I have been through it many times, and it never gets any easier. I am so very sorry. kokotg
I'm so sorry :grouphug: ( because my dog had the same issues: is it congestive heart failure? have you tried/considered any medications? my now almost 16 year old dog has been on Vetmedin for CHF for years now, and has done really well on it. It sounds like you've been through all of this and are past the point of dealing with it medically, but I just wanted to put it out there just in case)

HeidiKC
As soon as I saw the title of this thread I started crying! I am so sorry for you and how hard it is. Is there a friend you could call or e-mail to make the call for you and/or go with you? Could she call to see if the vet makes house calls for that kind of thing, if you'd be ok with that? Wonder if the vet takes e-mails?

Country Girl
CalikoKat~ I am so sorry to hear this and you will be in my prayers. I am struggling through the same thing today. I called this morning and made an appt. for this afternoon. I hoping the vet may have a some good news for us, but I really think it is time and I don't think our 12yo lab will be coming home with us. Hopefully you don't have to go through this alone and can work it out with your husband. I knew I couldn't do it myself and so waited to make an appt. until dh could be there with me (plus he wants to be able to say good-bye too). TXMary2
:grouphug: I am so sorry. My 12 yo doggy passed away on Thanksgiving morning. I cried for days and couldn't leave the house. It sucked. Your post caused me to tear up because I know the pain you're feeling. If he is suffering then ending it is the kindest thing you can do. Just be there with him so you are the last thing he sees and not a stranger at the vet. :(
WistfulRidge
:grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: Hoping and praying that your DH will be able to rearrange stuff and go with you. It is such a hard, hard thing to do and yet you know you have to do it because your baby is telling you it is time. My most beloved of feline companions had to helped along the way after nearly 19 years of life, four of which he had spent defying cancer and sticking around because he still had things to do. This was the kitty that slept by my side from early toddlerhood - that woke me from my nightmares and saved my life, my brother's life, and my grandfather's life (numerous times). It's been 13 years and I still have to take out a much worn picture of him every month or so and have a good cry over him, because when you have a furry companion that you love (and that loves you) that much there's a hole in your heart that never truly goes away. :grouphug: Praying for strength for you, and know that we're all crying with you too. 5LittleMonkeys
I've had to help 3 of my dogs end their suffering, 1 that passed in surgery and 1 that passed in his sleep. It doesn't get any easier to loose a part of your family, but take comfort in the fact that what you are doing is what he is depending on you to do. How horrid it would be to let them him suffer. Your Sammy is so lucky to have a friend like you who will help him at this time when he can't help himself. Just cry, hold him, cry some more, tell him what a wonderful companion he has been and thank him for all the unconditional love he has given to your family. If there is any feeling of guilt, let go of it because there is no place for it here and you owe it to him to let go with a pure conscience. :grouphug: and prayers that your heart will be at peace with this decision and that you can look back and celebrate what he was to you and not dwell on his passing. We had to do this in Nov, and it was horrible. Our beloved Chino also had a heart problem, was "honking", and the medication stopped being effective. It was the hardest thing we have ever had to do. :( DH took him and held him throughout the process, I just couldn't go. His best friend and "brother" Max still misses him every day. He was devastated and the first few weeks were hard. Just to LYK, it is normal for your other dog to be depressed and sad, and she may not eat too much. Our little guy lost 4 pounds (and he's not a big dog) so it was quite scary. I couldn't lose them both, so we really kept an eye on him and gave him some special meals, and finally he went back to eating normally. But he still looks around for his buddy every day. :grouphug: I am so, so sorry. I hope DH can help you out later, maybe just make the call...? I know I couldn't have done it alone, it is just so hard.
