Julie in CA
About my dd who has darkened skin folds, slightly elevated insulin, and a {gulp} hump... On Thursday the pediatrician forwarded her records and labs to the pediatric endocrinologist, and told me it typically takes about a month to get an appointment. Saturday afternoon the scheduler for the ped. endo. called and said that the doc had looked over the file, is very concerned about some of the symptoms, and asked if Tuesday was too soon for us to "be seen". We'll be going in tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. It's in the big city (about 125 miles away) and is a children's specialists group, which is very reassuring to me. I'm encouraged that we're going to be in a place where, presumably, they're very good at making children feel comfortable. On one hand, I'm hoping they find absolutely nothing wrong. On the other hand, I'm hoping they find a solution for her beyond just doing more of what we're already doing. :001_huh:
i.love.lucy
This is good! Those pediatric specialty places are great and will make her feel quite comfortable. Give us another update once you've seen the Dr. It must be a relief to have found a specialist and an answer to prayers to be seen sooner than you had hoped. Going to the "big city" as you put it is well worth it when it comes to medical issues. BTDT.

Julie in CA
Well, we left the house at 6:30 a.m. and arrived at the appointment right on time, 9 a.m., in spite of the long drive and the metropolitan traffic. {whew!} The pediatric endocrinologist was absolutely great, and had just the right words to make the discouraging parts less difficult. Yes, more exercise. Yes, continue with the dietary changes, BUT...at the same time, he reassured her that though there's so much she does have control over in terms of exercise and nutrition, that at the same time, she didn't cause this, and it's not her fault, just a function of her body that works differently in terms of metabolism. I think she was encouraged by that. The idea that she (and I) are entitled to *not feel guilty* about this was very powerful for us both. I think it also reassured dd to know that just because her sister is slimming down fairly easily with the changes we've already made, that doesn't mean that she's somehow inferior, or not trying as hard as her sister, just a difference in how their bodies work. The doc mentioned that in his practice, it's very very rare for any of the families to show any success with diet/exercise changes until they've been at it for more than a year. We're at about 7 months with our new habits, and we just need to stick with it even longer, and refine the good things we're already doing. He mentioned that the families who can stick with it for the first year then usually do show marked success, and we're almost there. He would like even more labs done before determining if medication is appropriate, and he's testing for Cushings/Pcos, though he's optimistic that those results will be negative, in part because dd is actually very tall for her age, and his guess is that had Cushing's been a factor, her height would have leveled out. Either way, he's doing the necessary testing, so that's good. We're supposed to go back in 3 months when all of the labs have been done and the results are in. He really had a great "bedside manner", and put us both at ease immediately, noticing and commenting about little details that I know made dd feel instantly better about being there. He asked her if she'd ever noticed how her mom has a sweet sing-song voice, and commented that it must be pleasant to wake up to mom in the morning. That it was his mom's birthday next week and he was looking forward to calling her and hearing her voice again. He also was enthusiastic upon hearing that dd already knows how to track her food using Sparkpeople, and gave her a high five and a huge grin. Altogether, it was very productive, and she left feeling better about herself than when she went in. :hurray: Thanks to all of you, for your encouragement. I'm not really sharing these details with people irl other than with my dh and dc, even though we have close extended family who would probably be interested. It just seems easier and kinder to keep this private, but I really really appreciate being able to share here and feel that someone cares without getting into the family entanglements, kwim? I know the Lord is carrying out His work in our lives, and everything is going according to plan, and it's wonderful to know that others are praying for us. :001_smile: Edited September 1, 2010 by Julie in CA
