  1. (OMG I thought I was losing my mind. I have this "revived" post saved, without looking at the dates I started reading it today and was utterly confused. ) This is one of the KEEPER posts for certain.
  2. My now 7th grader did well in a few FLVS classes last year. He is an Aspie and the digital interaction was great for him. We opted out of it this year, though we positively did had a good experience with it, primarily to decrease screen time. My son had some very, very good teachers. His only struggle was in the oral DBAs (Discussion based assessments, AKA oral exam). He has auditory memory issues which reared its ugly head during a Math DB. I would ask him to write down whatever question the teacher was asking him but you could just see his anxiety mounting, then he would shut down. And he did meander off into the internet between lessons, so to cut down on screen time while I have his younger siblings home this year homeschooling, we opted out of it. He enjoyed 6th grade Math, Science, Reading, Keyboarding, and Digital photography. We dropped History and Language Arts because they were not good fits for him, however a friend's son is excelling in those 2 classes!
  3. i'm pretty much obsessed with YALE schools in Southern New Jersey. Obsessed because we moved from there the year before my son was dx'd. :cursing:
  4. 7th,5th, & 2nd HITS -- Saxon 8/7 (Aspie) & Saxon 7/6 (advanced learner) CLE Lang Arts for all 3 (shocked about this one) I needed something "meaty" that could cover certain areas - this fit the bill but cannot believe how much we like it. And I **love** it for my 2nd grader w/building phonics/reading skills. How did I not use this in years past? Discovery Streaming. (love) Reading Wonderopolis and Student News Daily every day. From the Teachers Pay Teachers site I downloaded morning work for all 3 - definitely helps us all get our heads in the game (and allows my coffee to do its' thing) also enjoying from TpT the Gr 3 Lang ARts Notebooks for beginning grammar skills with 2nd grader. (Like it so much I bought Math Interactive Notebooks for older 2 kids) Misses - Hake Saxon 2 was way, way too slow. We skipped to book 2 in the workbooks and added in Real Math 3 from his former private school
  5. Thanks for this, Hunter. Natural Speller looks like something we could use here!
  6. Our neuropsych highly recommended encouraging physical activity as most Aspies tend to be "soft." He recommended "repetitive physical activity" but my guy has dyspraxia, so finding something PHYSICAL he can do has been a challenge. Yes, he is completely obsessed with computers/videogames/etc. We just don't want that to be his obsession, because it is truly all-consuming for him. He swims. I don't think he swims well enough to be on a swim team but swim lessons with a coach who pushes him to do more and more have been awesome. On our way home from a lesson I feel like I have him *all* with me and we're not living/talking in his world. Then recently we added golf. We found a golf coach and he takes private lessons - same results. We're trying to push him to get more "into" the sport of golf by buying him books, putting the golf channel on, etc...
  7. Would he consider a dance academy f/t? Something like Orlando Ballet's Academy ( I think they use K12), Patel Conservatory (think Hannah Betts) or something out-of-state like Rock Academy in Philly? If he's considering a career in dance this would afford him opportunities and open doors. I'm not saying they are lax with schoolwork, but it they have rigorous dance requirements so maybe he can focus on dance a bit more while completing requirements or taking more electives.
  8. My 6th grader is currently doing Winston and I recently ordered grammarlogues on HSBC (jury is still out on it).
  9. Wow... so many great ideas! Thank you!!! Ironically, I just ordered the Intellego unit studies on Middle Ages 1 (gr 6-8). Thank you again!
  10. "fun" if you found one or used such an item? I feel like such a boring teacher some days. I often look at http://www.ellenjmchenry.com/ and think her curriculum items look like fun! Ideas? Suggestions? -Kathy, the boring momma/teacher
  11. Is anyone doing this and if so, are you using Kingfisher? We need to change it up a bit and I'm pulling out my older version of TWTM now to look it over.
  12. What about Lost Tools of Writing? by Circe
  13. Asking for help... EEL is simply not working for my son. The chart copying has become a dreaded chore with very little retention. Now that we're half way through though, I'm now looking at either going back to R&S or AG. (He is a 6th grade Aspie.) I find the layout to be very confusing, but we have continued to get through it week-after-week. It's just not working for him. It's not sticking. I understand this is only year 1 of EEL for him and the expectation is that by year 3 in essentials he will have mastered it, but I feel like he is terribly confused and that we lost what he learned in FLL and R&S over the years. I've tried cutting back on chart copying, but then that is a lot of chart to memorize/master. Copying does obviously make it easier to retain. We do continue with sentences and using the Analytic Task sheet to diagram the sentences. I'm really at a loss. Then in IEW, again - little retention. I think he is completely over-focused on the stylistic techniques and dress-ups. But I do think this is something that we could probably get through if we continue with IEW. Suggestions? THoughts? I'm debating even continuing at this point :( TY!

  15. My gifted 4th grader is in a local private school where she's doing well and loves life after homeschooling since 1st. It's working for the moment, so we're keeping her there. BUT I am not happy with their Lang Arts. She had completed FLL3 prior to entering this school for 4th and is ahead of peers in L.A. which attribute to FLL. They do use ZB Spelling, a grade ahead, so that's OK, but no formal grammar is unnerving me because we DID do grammar last year. I'm debating what would be ...hmmm, not necessarily the EASIEST, but the program that would "get done," the program that would be the most comprehensive with the least amount of pain.... to afterschool grammar: I'm debating CLE Lang Arts or FLL4. Thoughts? Never used Shurley - open to that as well. TY!
  16. I was really pleased to see my 4th grader come home with Wordly Wise for her vocab and her spelling "texts" were a grade ahead. I'm pleased with their math so far, but she is ahead. My first grader, who is a great little reader, is not as far ahead of the game as I thought he would be! (We are in a small private this year.)
  17. 1st grader will be doing MM2 and finishing ETC series 4th grader will be doing MM5 and ____? I'm going to decide based on her homework next week, but I'm tossing around FLL4/Hake5/Mct
  18. Our testing was 3 two hour days but it was supposed to be 4 two hour days.
  19. I think you'll find the list helpful when you're filling out all of the patient intakes. Definitely include your list in with all of the assessments you will have to fill out. One BIG oops that happened with us almost happened because dh mistakenly told NP that ds had no words before 5 which was the ONLY factor excluding him from a Aspergers dx. When I went in for results they told me that and I looked at them like they had 2 heads:001_huh:, my ds lost his speech but it did return. He was delayed but he most definitely had speech at 5. I came home and showed my DH our son's PreK video with ds talking and singing. For the record, after that correction, ds had a 99 on the Aspergers assessment. So our mistake was having my dh take ds to the first appointment because he was VERY fuzzy on dates and milestones. Milestone questions were HUGE. You'll find all of the little details helpful you wrote out helpful! Our NP testing was an hour initial interview, 8 hours of testing (but ds did it in 6) then an hour wrap up interview 2 weeks after testing completed.
  20. My youngest guy has dark hair/light blue eyes and tans really well. The dark/light complement garners a lot of attention. We've had people stop us often. I find it a little distressing now that he's 6 because baby stage is over, and he has 2 siblings. We only have one dd and she is really good about it, and will be the first to tell you how cute her little brother is, but sheesh... hello, 2 other kids. I feel awful that the other 2 (older sister, the other an oblivious older brother) sometimes have noteven been acknowledged by people while complimenting youngest.
  21. Thanks Doodler.. that's a great suggestion. Jennifer, funny... last night I was on here reading through some of your old posts trying to find the link to the one book you suggested, Unstuck. After adding that to my wishlist I found Big Picture thinking and added that to my wishlist too. I have an obnoxiously long wish list. Thank you!!!!
  22. Need more conversation skills work for my 11 yo Aspie guy. do you have a favorite book or resource or something that has worked?
  23. http://www.greenville.k12.sc.us/taylorse/About/Writing%20for%20Everyone.pdf A book by Gould, method is really popular for formulaic paragraph through 5 paragraph composition.
  24. Same boat here for my 11yo Aspergers guy. This year we wrote- a lot! We used The Paragraph Book, King's Writing Skills 1, WWW5, did some 4 Square writing (*totally clicked with him*), and hired a writing tutor. This year we will be doing IEW with CC in addition to The Paragraph Book 2 and Writing Skills 2.
  25. My guy, who all of sudden seemed to struggle with retention, has done really well going from what we had used (Horizons, MM, and Singapore) to Saxon and the key to... series. I've thought about adding in some R&S since he does so well with R&S grammar.
