I just found out that I have thyroid cancer

Recommended Posts

I had a biopsy on Monday, and they called me with the results today. I go for a pre-op on June 2nd, and surgery on the 11th. The Dr said after surgery, I will get radiation. I'm in complete shock because he told me weeks ago that 95% of thyroid nodules are benign. I guess I'm in that 5%. I'm scared to death. I've had this lump(I can feel it) on my neck for over 2 years now. My PCP told me "not to worry" about it, so I never got it checked. But I've been feeling crappy for about a year now, so I went to a specialist. Anyone have a positive outcome that they could share with me?

My husband's co-worker was diagnosed with thyroid cancer a few years ago. He had surgery and radiation. His voice was hoarse for awhile after the surgery, but that did get better. He is now fine and happily retired and playing with his grandchildren.

I'll be praying for you! :grouphug:

I'm so sorry.:grouphug:

My cousin's wife was diagnosed with thyroid cancer after their first child was born, almost seven years ago. She went through treatment, then had two more children, and she's absolutely fine now.

I'll be praying for you.

I didn't have thyroid cancer, but I had Hodgkin's disease 15 years ago. I had an enlarged lymph node in my neck. had one major surgery and 6 weeks of radiation tx. My radiation was from my jaw to my the end of my ribcage.

1. Breathe, this is a scary time.

2. Listen to your heart and your doctors. If you have a dh that will be your guardian that is valuable. I told my dh to keep all of those people with negative thoughts and stories to stay away from me. The only thing I was in charge of was my attitude, I didn't want that messed with.

3. Depending on the area they radiate you may not have to shave your armpits for a while. I know that is probably the least of your concerns, but it was nice to not have to shave for two years.

4. It's okay to cry, it's okay to have a bad day.

5. If you believe in the power of prayer, pray.

6. Find someone to talk to. It may not be your spouse. You may want a support group where you can dump all of your feelings. That's the only thing I didn't do and sometimes wish I had.

7. Don't forget to eat right and get the proper amount of rest.

(HUGS) Feel free to PM me if you want.

I had a friend that went through this several years ago. She has been fine since. Thyroid cancer is one of the most easily treated cancers, because the radiation that they use is extremely effective. If I'm correct, usually you take a pill of radioactive iodine, which attaches to and kills any thyroid cancer cells in your body. I think you have to stay away from others for awhile because you will be somewhat radioactive. The iodine very specifically targets thyroid cells, which is why thyroid cancer is so treatable, and it doesn't do any "collateral" damage, so to speak. All the best,

Kayleen

It is generally speaking the one of the slowest growing cancers and outcomes are usually excellent.

Please please test your vitamin D levels right away. Low vitamin D levels have been correlated with pancreatic, breast, lung, colon and prostate cancer. Optimal vitamin D levels are closely linked with immune function. Raising your D levels to optimal levels will benefit you tremendously.

Also knowing your CRP levels and lowering that to optimal could be beneficil, though D is definitely the biggie.

Wishing you health,

Katherine

Oh, no. :grouphug:

I won't ask, but I hope it is one of the very curable ones.

Don't be scared. Thyroid cancer is easy to treat. My step-mother had it several years ago, had the surgery and radiation and is in great health today, cancer free.

I had malignant melanoma several years ago, and I know how scared you must feel. You'll be ok. :) :grouphug:

:grouphug: The 'C' word is so scary to hear.

Everyone I know who had thyroid cancer has gone on to live a normal life, cancer free with a few modifications. If caught in time, it is one of the easiest cancers to cure.

May you be free of anxiety, may your doctors do their jobs well and may you have a quick recovery.

They did a biopsy and said I had cancer. But then when they go in there it wasn't cancerous, just a nodule with blood in it that made the test read wrong. I have known others that have been through the same thing.

I haven't read all the posts, but even if it is cancer, it is one of the most curable cancers there is. The reason is because they can give the radiation to the neck without damaging other organs.

I pray that everything works out well for you.

Julie

praying for you.

My dh just told me a story yesterday of a gal he sees regularly as a result of his job.

They found thyroid cancer; removed her thyroid. Doc told told her she had six months... because in every other case like hers, that's the longest that patient lived. This was 3 or 4 months ago.

This gal went back recently to be checked. EVERYTHING is totally CLEAR. She's fine and feels great!
