marbel
The husband of a fellow boardie, Pam L in Mid Tenn, has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, requiring long-distance travel to a specialist. She would appreciate prayers from those so inclined! I just thought those who "knew" Pam here might want to know about it. She has given me permission to post. Post edited by moderator: Please send a PM to the OP for additional information on ways to help the family. (Moderators, if this is against board rules, my apologies!) umsami
:grouphug: Thanks for posting. Will be praying, too. I want to say it's the same cancer that L.R. Knost (gentle parenting advocate/author) has been fighting. She travels to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville for treatment. https://www.youcaring.com/l-r-knost-568460

Lanny
There may be organizations that help people in the situation Pam's DH is in, with Travel and other expenses. How one locates those organizations, I don't know, but I believe they exist. Possibly start with the American Cancer Scoiety and go from there. Liz CA
Maybe someone in the Portland area can be of help as well with accommodations, travel advice and all the other thousand little details.
ktgrok
Happy to help, but do check if your health insurance will help with travel costs. I know ours did when my husband at the time traveled for a heart transplant evaluation and my mom's did when she traveled for surgery for lung cancer. Also, make sure to ask the hospital about any programs with local hotels...usually there will be some that give a discounted rate to patients/families. Lanny
I googled and found this web page of the American Cancer Society. https://www.cancer.org/treatment/finding-and-paying-for-treatment/understanding-health-insurance/if-you-have-trouble-paying-a-bill/programs-and-resources-to-help-with-cancer-related-expenses.html Please note from the above web page, among other things: Help with air travel or transport for cancer careThe National Patient Travel Center (NPTC) is a central clearinghouse that refers callers to over 3 dozen charitable or special discounted patient air transport service groups. NPTC can help patients with cancer find a program to assist with the costs of air travel for illness-related reasons, including air ambulance services. The National Patient Travel Helpline screens callers, verifies the illness and need for transport, and determines if the caller is eligible for help through one of the air travel programs. You can call them at 1-800-296-1217, or visit them online at www.patienttravel.org.
marbel
Thanks for all the comments and advice. I will be sure Pam sees them (if she is not reading here herself right now). :-)
emzhengjiu
As wonderful a cause as this is, please do not post "Go Fund Me" links. It's okay to start a thread about the general situation and ask members to send PMs for additional information. Thanks.

Pam L in Mid Tenn
Thank you to everyone for all the hugs, prayers, kind words, links, phone numbers, and ideas. I am too tired tonight to follow through with anything, but will certainly look into resources.

Mabelen
Prayers. A way to help families in these circumstances with air travel is by donating air miles. I recently donated to two different organizations that help with patients and their families travel needs. Something to look into, although the miles don't go to specific people but to the organizations themselves who then select candidates in need. Pam L in Mid Tenn
Does anyone know of a reasonably priced hotel close to OHSU in Portland? A "middle of the ground" type? Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn Express or something like that? NOT an el cheapo like Motel Six. NOT an executive conference like Marriott or Hyatt. This would be for our initial appointment with the doctor. Only a two or three night stay. Thanks!
creekland
Just catching up on "new" (to me) things on the Hive and saw this. Sending my :grouphug: and prayers and really hoping all goes well. FWIW, with my mom and her travels to doctors, the hospital had a person who gave us a list of places to stay and those places had discounts they offered to those with medical visits making the cost cheaper than anything I could find online. I suspect it's worth calling (or searching online at the hospital's site) to see if OHSU has something similar.
