  1. Yes. I taught 30 years ago before I had my own children. Now, I want to get back into the school district here so I can do enrichment classes. I took the Core yesterday and I found that to be quite easy. So, I don't have any real concern about the curriculum content but rather with the jargon and 'ed-u-speak' which I am sure has changed significantly since my time in college.
  2. Can you share the name? Or just message me? Thanks. This all came about really suddenly and I'm rushing to get everything finished and submitted before the big summer crunch hits the state education dept. Yuck.
  3. Has anyone taken this? I'm trying to re-vamp my certification that expired 30 years ago. I know it's not just content but contains a lot of teacher lingo which I'm sure has changed in 30 years. I would love to hear from anyone who as done it recently.
  4. Simple answer: Yes. Expanded answer based on you additional info- In your case, I would only say 'yes' if I was sure son had his wits about him and understood the implications of hard jumps. Safe jumping must be observed.
  5. Just FB search Kate Estes. Two or three will pop up. She has 'homemaker/homeschool mom' in her description.
  6. Anyone have any anecdotal stories? Did it help? hurt? Would you do it again?
  7. It's messy but so what? In just a few minutes it would be tidy. It's not as if there are three day old cereal bowls half filled with milk or full ash trays lying around. It isn't even cluttered. It just has bits and pieces lying about. It would go from messy to tidy in about 10 minutes and back to messy in a blink - several times every day if there are actual people living in the house.
  8. He has an appointment tomorrow with Alaska Fracture and Orthopedic Clinic. I've heard good things about their sports medicine guy.
  9. Update of sorts: Still waiting for a spinal orthopedist appointment but had the scans read by a neurologist today. He said that with the way his scans look, he might as well be a sky diver...he has way more damage than would be expected for a 17 year old kid. However, the irony about this whole situation is that the pain he is experiencing is from the muscles rather than the spine. So, if we hadn't had the muscle injury, there would have been no scans to pick up the spinal issue until the impingement had progressed to a dangerous point. So, at present man/child will definitely be looking at extensive PT along with reduced impact activities otherwise, he says that surgery will be in his future sooner rather than later.
  10. I've been on the phone all morning getting referrals, sending records, etc. And, as luck would have it, my older son's girlfriend works for a neurologist and her boss is going to take a look at his images and let us know where he thinks we should go. But, the good news that I am hearing is that while a rest from gymnastics and skating may be required, developing a strong ( or in his case, stronger) core and a good stretching program is very beneficial. I did locate a practice here that does a lot of spine work and has sport medicine doctors on staff. It would have been easier if they had the word 'spine' in their practice name. So, we have some good leads and some referrals being sent out. Hopefully we will get a new direction and some solid advice. Funny side note - I mentioned that several people mentioned that swimming might be a good alternative while his back heals. He said that sounded good to him and then asked if that included diving because that wold be a cool alternative sport. :001_rolleyes:
  11. The man/child hurt his back about 18 months ago. He was helping me in the garden and was moving rocks in the 15-20 lb range. He didn't lift with his knees...someone asked him why. He said the rock didn't come with a warning label. I figured it would get better in a week or two. So, we did the ice, then heat, ibuprofen, etc. It improved a bit for awhile. Then it worsened and we saw a chiropractor. In the last year, he has seen two different chiropractors, 2 different massage therapists, and finally a new physical therapist, taken a slew of NSAIDs and used a TENS unit. All this time, he has been a competitive figure skater and gymnast. In fact he just landed his first double back layout with a full twist. (Once he is 'warmed up' he is relatively pain-free.) But, when not pushing and pumping adrenaline, he is in constant pain. he just turned 17 and he hurts like an old man all day long. Our PCP just recently referred him to a PT who wanted an MRI before he started working on him. We got the results. :crying: My competitive, athletic son has arthritis, two inflamed discs, one bulging, as well as a congenital narrowing of the spinal canal all exacerbated by severe muscular 'guarding'. The worst of it is that he wants 6 months of absolute rest for healing before he starts to work on his back. The only treatment he recommends is massage and dry needle acupuncture. I just can't imagine kiddo having 6 more months of pain before anyone starts trying to 'fix' him. I also can't imagine him with 6 months of physical down-time. Even with the pain he has now, the only relief he finds is at the gym. I know we need a second opinion but I don't know where to go or who to see. We have a very small pool of medical specialists here so options aren't terrific. I'm open to any ideas and thoughts people might have. I would love some good ideas for supplements that might help with joint, cartilage, and bone health as well as anything that might benefit inflammation. My person belief is that working to build core strength will help support his spine and would be beneficial. Working to decrease inflammation would be a good thing. Anything else I'm missing?
  12. Not road trips but I've flow to Australia from Maryland with a 3 month old . That trip is over 20 hours of air time/ about 30 hours with layovers. I've also done the same round trip with a 10 week old. Lots of car trips with infants over the years. Move as far as you can while they sleep. Stop for nursing and diaper change when they wake rather then when your normal schedule says it's time. Have snacks available in the car for everyone else so you can go long stretches without stopping to take advantage of that sleep time! Have Mama sleep with a small blanket or burp cloth tucked under her shirt for a few nights before travel. Tuck it in around baby or give it to him/her to snuggle to keep Mama's scent close.
  13. I soooo agree. If I follow the guidelines published by the American Diabetes Association, my numbers are in the 2-300s after meals. Yikes. Their suggestions for 'low carb' meals are no where near what I can consume and keep my numbers under 120.
  14. My son's figure skating coach is there with another one of his skaters. Keegan Messing is skating for Canada, not USA, but everyone here in Anchorage is pretty psyched!
  15. Does that really make sense? This all happened over the course of a few days. I would think that if she had lice when the hairdresser put in the highlights, it would have been mentioned then. And, surely, it couldn't become a huge problem in the few days between the highlights and the shearing. (I've dealt with lice in my kids. It doesn't become a huge issue overnight.)
  16. The first thing that comes to mind about mom's motives is how powerless she must feel. How often do we hear people on this very forum talk about how awful the 'system' can be for people who need real justice when things happen to their kids. Maybe Mom just really, really wanted everyone to know what kind of jerk she thinks the Dad is. maybe she wanted to let his friends, family, etc know what he did in a 'big impact' kind of way. I'm not saying I think the mother is right. I'm just saying that maybe she felt that she needed to make this is big deal for anyone to take it seriously.
  17. I have tried everything on your list! I have to say, that for me, menopause was the best thing to ever happen in terms of migraines. I don't know how old you are, but hold on to the idea that it will improve in time. In the meantime :grouphug:. I get just how miserable it can be.
  18. I started guarding at 16 and worked as a guard every summer through college as well as guarded /taught swimming while in college. It's a great niche skill that could land him some extra income where ever he works. I would only be concerned if it was a small pool without adequate coverage that wouldn't allow guards to rotate stations or take appropriate breaks. Otherwise, if you son is a responsible kid who you feel would keep his mind on the job and not on chatting with friends or being easily distracted by others, I think it's a great job for a teen.
  19. Thinking of you. Phone calls like that can be so hard. Waiting can be agonizing.
  20. Both - Athletic in its preparation, Artistic in its presentation.
  21. My daughter's two front teeth were completely in before the baby teeth feel out. Happened to another one of mine as well...just can t remember which one. I don't think that's completely uncommon.
  22. The story does it...........differently. There are some things the movies does very well. I really found the movie compelling. BUT, the story just has far more nuance. I read the story first so my understanding of the movie came with the story already in my brain. So, I probably have a different take on the film that someone who didn't read the story. The focus of the book is different, I guess would be the best way to explain it.
