Even our PARENTS had money on us not making it - the most optimistic bet had us at 2 years. (And by bet, I mean an actual, real, live bet. Oh, yes they did.)

We're still together, and we're both turning 35 w/in a week. :D

Oh boy. I'm really going to muck up the "average" around here. I was [gasp] 40 and my wife was 31. We've been married 10 years.

Would it help to mention we lived together for 7 years before we got married?

Oh, it would not!!!??? :tongue_smilie::lol:

LOL! I was SO determined to live with my DH for a good number of years before getting married. Alas. He joined the military to put himself through college, and the only way to live together was to get married. So- we did. :) As I mentioned above- we're coming up on our 15th wedding anniversary... but we've been "together" for 18 years.

My brother lived with his girlfriend for 10 years before they tied the knot. I think cohabitation is one good way to find out how compatible and committed you are for the long term. They've been together for 12 years, but married only two... my poor SIL had to endure all the traditional wedding advice when they got engaged. That was funny! Like anything was really going to change other than getting a certificate. :tongue_smilie: My only advice to them was: you've had a great relationship for 10 years... keep up the good work! LOL.

Living together isn't the only good way to be sure of compatibility, of course! I'm not dissing on people who go about things differently. But I don't see anything wrong with living together first either.

I will say this though. Within a year of getting married, my brother became very ill with a serious condition. They were SO glad they had gotten married- otherwise my SIL wouldn't have had the same visiting rights as "family"...
