LibraryLover
Given those areas, I have a better shot at attending if it's on the west coast of the US. Sacramento works best, but I might be able manage Las Vegas, depending on when. I've never been to a HS covention, but now I think it could be fun. :)

Chelli
SWB will be in Houston in June (I think she mentioned that she would already be in Texas this year) where I will get to see her, but I'm up for Festivus anywhere that Southwest flies! Hen
if we are going to try to do this every year, I would propose that we move it around the country so more people have a chance to go. There is a big blogger conference that seems to do this, last year it was on the east coast, this year it is in San Diego. Are we talking about a more academic homeschool conference that we wish we had? That would be so cool. :001_smile:

I agree about moving it around. I just read the post the idea originated in and I'm so jealous!! It sounds like so much fun. No chance of me making it out to the west coast though. thescrappyhomeschooler
I can't vote because I can't choose! I've always wanted to go to Austin, but Roswell is so very tempting! Sacramento sounds good, too. Anywhere but Vegas, baby! BTDT. Parrothead
I picked Roswell since I have about as good a chance to get there as I do of any of the options. So since I'm dreaming I figured one place I haven't been yet. Better for me would be Boston.
Veritaserum
I don't think it's fair to have it within a 12-hour drive of any place that has decent conferences already. Is it Philadelphia that has the stellar line-up? I picked Vegas because it's within driving distance, but anything in the western states (Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, California, etc.) would be doable. It seems like Texas and states east of the Mississippi have more options than those of us in the west. :)
sassenach
West coast!! Vegas would be a good choice. Lots of cheap, direct flights go in from all over the country.
Truscifi
Anywhere would be fine with me, but I picked Sacramento. If I'm driving cross country, I might as well drive all the way across the country.
justasque
What about a house-convention Festivus in Philadelphia, the day before or after the large one? LisaKinVA
West coast!! Vegas would be a good choice. Lots of cheap, direct flights go in from all over the country. Hmmm, having had to go out there several years for conventions, I have to disagree with the assumption of there being lots of "cheap, direct flights" ... of course, there are the red-eyes back to the east coat that are direct. I voted for Dallas, because I could drive (yes, it's two days... but at least we could drive). But, how did these selections come about... I see a dearth of anything east of the Mississippi. So you're saying I have your sympathy for being forced to live here?:tongue_smilie: DH is military and we have not once, in seventeen years, gotten a vote on where we were stationed... there could be worse places, trust me. I've BTDT. I totally understand the reputation Vegas has but I've been pleasantly surprised at some of the family friendly activities here. We live in the desert but can drive 45 minutes and ski up Mt Charleston or drive 10 minutes and hike Red Rock Canyon from our house. Flights into the airport here are cheap and plentiful and if everyone objects to being on the strip there is a lovely hotel at the base of Red Rock, aptly called Red Rock Hotel & Casino (of course) and we could enjoy the Festivus while looking at the spectacular mountains here... or hey, you can all come to my house. :D We've got plenty of room.... dirty ethel rackham
I voted Austin because it had the cheapest airfare. Texas would be great when it is cold in other parts of the country. In2why
Williamsburg Virginia!!!! That way everyone can enjoy the history triad of Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. Ali in OR
I would LOVE to see this happen in Portland OR--easiest drive for me. But I could conceivably consider WA or northern CA. Sacramento might be possible. Echoing what's already been said--all of the Great Home School Conferences are happening east of the Mississippi. They all look like they're within driving distance of each other to my west coast eyes. It would be nice to have some alternative on the west coast. A site like Las Vegas would mean almost everyone would have to fly in. A site in WA, OR, or CA would mean a lot of people could drive. People who can't drive to one of the awesome conferences east of the Mississippi.

Veritaserum
Salt Lake City!!! Or Denver. Are you scheduled for either of these this year, SWB?? Salt Lake is very central to the western states. Vegas is also a good, central choice. The more extreme we go in any one direction (Seattle, Roswell, San Diego, etc.), the more difficult we make it for people who want to drive. Just pointing that out. :)
ocelotmom
They are about the same for me. I'm cool with Reno. And maybe the Sacramento peeps would be ok with Reno. It's just over the mountain. I imagine Sac would be better from a Bay Area perspective, and that's a big population. Depends on the time of year, too. I'm not sure I'd schedule it in Reno any time between, say, October and April because of the risk of the pass closing.
