How do you feel when you wake up in the morning?

Recommended Posts

My Dr. asked me this question this week. We're trying to figure out why my hair is falling out.....

I would frame this as a poll, but I don't want to take the time to learn how to do that right now.

So he said, "Do you wake up feeling rested and refreshed?" "No," I said, "I wake up feeling nervous". Doesn't everybody?

He prescribed anti-anxiety pills.

I mean, I have 4 kids to feed, clothe, educate, and entertain. I'm taking classes in accounting at University, and my husband lives and works somewhere else! Wouldn't that make you nervous?

So, ladies? How do you feel when you wake up in the morning? I can't be the only one who's living this way.....

I wake up peacefully. This last for about 5 minutes. Then I begin to really wake up (i.e. my brain turns on) which leads to panic. The day usually seems overwhelming to me, and I often dread getting up. For some reason all the responsibilities of my day already seem like they may not get checked off the list. Thus, the panic. I am not depressed, but I do suffer from anxiety. One way to combat it is to get right up when the alarm rings. However, I also wake up very tired and hit the snooze alarm. Sigh.

If you wouldn't mind, will you please pm me and tell me what your doctor prescribed for you? I've been close to accepting a prescription but always chicken out. I'd be interested to know what you were given and perhaps if it helps (after you begin taking it). Don't feel obligated to share this with me if you don't want to, btw. :001_smile:

Never nervous.

I feel well-rested since my dh returned a few weeks ago. This is a nice change since I battled insomnia during this last deployment.

My first instinct is always to cuddle up in the cozy down bedding and catch a few more winks, but I think that is fairly normal!

God Bless you. I'm glad your husband is home safe and sound.

Depends what time of the month it is or what is going on in my life.

I am a mornign person. I am waking about 5am here at the moment, which is just before dawn. I love it- the sound of birds and the gentle light in the mornings. I get up before everyone else, make a cup of tea, meditate, do yoga, go for a walk. I absolutely love my mornings.

However, there are days I don get enough sleep and still wake up at the crack of dawn - when I WANT to go back to sleep and I just cant.

And some days I wake up inexplicably sad or desolate or disturbed, or just feel like hiding and not getting up. I find once I do actually get up and move and have my tea and some exercise, I am fine for the day.

There is an article in our newspaper about how depression can be linked to not getting enough rest. I do think its sad that so many people just never feel deeply rested. Sometimes I feel it too....and ongoing underlying exhaustion. DH is taking me to Bali in 3 weeks though and hopefully 5 days of massage and sitting by the pools and adventuring will help me to rejuvinate. The week before that I am taking a week's silent retreat as I do each year.

Sore for a few minutes. Pretty good once I've stretched in the shower, and then I dress fairly quickly and BANG, out the door, drive, rush from the car to the office, grab my stuff, stride to the wards, and BOOM I am ON!

On weekends I do the same thing, but it is the laundry and dishes and toilets I attack.

When I was younger and had no arthritis, I went from asleep to BOOM. My dad used to start whistling polkas when his eyes opened, and usually hit Sousa by the time he was dressed. I come by this honestly.

DOOMED!

Seriously, it's chronic, although this summer for awhile it went away. Sunshine helps, winter makes it worse.

It's kind of a joke in my marriage. I wake up and my husband rolls over and says, "Jennifer, you are NOT doomed."

Honestly, if I don't eat after dinner I tend to wake up feeling better. Ditto if I got lots of exercise the day before. Ditto if I partake of 'tea' the night before.

I feel doomed because like you I have way too much to do and there's no way to catch up. Plus I have bad dreams or outright nightmares most nights.

Hung over. Which I would understand if I'd been drinking the night before. It's unfair to feel so crappy without having the fun of the party beforehand! I'm fine once I'm up and moving and had some coffee but yeah, lately I feel hung over when I first wake up.

I wake up tired. I usually never get enough sleep. I'd like to just sleep until either the kids wake me or I wake myself.....but then, as someone else mentioned, I'm grumpy if I do that. I have to have time to myself in the mornings. I don't even like DH to be up with me. I don't like to talk in the mornings and if other people are up, then I have to talk. And if the kids are up, then I have to start tending to their needs. But yeah, I usually wake up tired.

Well rested and ready to start the day. Even after my 2YO wakes me up on average 2 times :)

Since I have been on a good diet/exercise program and have been taking greens and probiotics, I feel WONDERFUL in the mornings. I get about 7-8 hours of sleep and 2 interruptions, but I feel great. Have been this way for a few months!

I can't believe he prescribed you anxiety meds based on what you just said.

Your hair falling out should have tipped him off to have some blood work done. You could have low iron. That is the first symptom of it, and feeling tired and anxious.

I have anemia, and that is how I felt every day. I am an anxious person by nature, and was already ON anxiety meds, so my Dr. did bloodwork and that was the cause.

Honestly, I would have been offended at any Dr. who decided to throw anxiety pills my way before checking out anything physically wrong. Anxiety meds tend to be the "quick fix" for many general practitioners today. When in fact, these meds can be dangerous. Whether benzos, SSRI's or SSNR'I's.

When I get up in the mornings now, I need coffee and some time to wake up. But I do not feel the way I did before, and what you are describing now.

Prior to fixing my iron, I felt doomed, anxious, tired, not rested, and my hair was falling out as well. I also had VERY low Vitamin D. Like, non-existant.

I never thought anything of it. Not until I mentioned my hair falling out to my Dr.

I would get a second opinion if it were me. Anxiety pills(And I know because I am on them, and was on them PRIOR to my anemia ) were not prescribed to me lightly. I saw three different specialists before I was prescribed anxiety meds. and this sort of medication should not be prescribed by a general practioner either. It should only be done by a pharmacologist or Psychiatrist who specializes in this area, and can monitor your condition closely.

I would ask for a complete blood test, to include Serum iron, Ferritin levels, Saturation levels, B12, Homocysteine, Intrinsic factors, Folic Acid, and Vitamin D. Most Dr's will not ask for Ferritin, and Homocysteine, But I would be assertive on this.

If you are not taking a mutli-vitamin, I would start doing so. One without Iron until your levels were checked.

I hope you feel better real soon.

I'll admit to feeling nervous when I first wake up. I don't feel better until I see that everyone else in the house is fine. It's just what I do and I've gotten used to it. I have battled depression/anxiety in the past (after losing several family members unexpectedly) but I've reached a place that I am happy with now. Hope you figure it all out.

I wake up feeling oh, crud, what time is it? because I have been oversleeping for the past month, and not being able to go to sleep until very late.

I think it's because my body/mind want to adjust to the time change before my consciousness realizes what's going on.

Generally, I wake up feeling focused, looking forward to getting stuff done. Physically, I usually feel tired or my ankles and feet hurt.

I like the way Peela says she feels. I wish I could get up that early and be cheerful about it, and feel rested.

Dancer67, I think you are spot on. I agree that it is irresponsible of a doctor to "throw" anxiety meds at a patient based on what the OP has said she said. I agree that bloodwork should be done to determine deficiencies, before just diagnosing "anxiety". There are so many other possibilities. Doesn't sound like a good doctor. And anxiety meds have their own side effects- and what if you are anxious due to deficiencies as well? You are being sent on a wild goose chase.

Get some bloodwork done. Then you can rule out those things and come back to a purely emotional disturbance.

There are other things you can take for anxiety too, such as magnesium and/ or herbs. Doesn't work for everyone but it can alleviate symptoms for many people.

DOOMED!

This.

But more specifically, tired, sore, and anxious. Coffee and having completed lesson plans prepared for the day help. Once everything is moving in an organized routine the anxiety subsides a lot. But, I have also had diagnosed anxiety disorders since preadolescence. Planning in detail the things that can be planned helps me manage that issue.

Sleepy. Not nervous.

I used to wake up nervous. One day I realized it was not normal. I truly didn't know. Once I realized that, I started taking steps to relieve my anxiety. I was very fortunate to be able to relieve most of it with changes in diet, exercise, sleep (and rest) and so on. But the absolutely number one strategy that helped to relieve it was realizing that it wasn't normal.

Your doctor should absolutely have done some bloodwork to rule out some of the most common causes of anxiety and exhaustion, like iron, thyroid and so forth. If you're not comfortable trying the meds, go back and tell him so, and ask for a thorough work-up first. You're not challenging your doctor, just letting him know you've had time to think and you'd like to rule out other factors first, then try the meds if nothing else works.

He did prescribe the anxiety pills in response to my comments, but he also sent me to the lab for a complete blood workup. In a couple of weeks I am also scheduled for a scan of my thyroid, because that is where we suspect the problem lies. So I didn't mean to insinuate that the anti-anxiety pills were ALL he suggested. I was just surprised that my comment about waking up feeling nervous seemed so out of the ordinary. I truly thought that was the norm for people like us with extremely busy schedules, hence this thread. But thanks for your post and and your suggestions. I'm not sure if I will be getting all those things checked in the blood work, but I'm confident we'll get to the bottom of this.

Warm Regards, Jackie

Did he also check your thyroid?????? Hair falling out is a huge indicator. It can indicate many things. I hope that he did the blood tests and ruled out the many physical things that could cause hair loss and nervous feelings (as if you didn't have good reason to feel that way anyhow!) before giving you anxiety meds. Please tell me he did this and that he referred you to a psyc who is trained specifically in these types of meds. If not, get a different dr.

I wake up feeling tired and a little worried if I doing have dh's clothes and lunch ready. I just hate having to figure out what to pack him in the morning while I am still waking up.

Yes, as I just responded to a pp, the doctor DID also send me to the lab for complete blood workup, AND a thyroid scan at the hospital in a couple of weeks.

I wake up feeling like a mack truck! My back hurts and my head hurts and I feel foggy and groggy until I drink my coffee and the ibuprophen kicks in. I also feel anxious and nervous because of all that is on my plate right now. I would be really stupid NOT to feel that way, even though I know it is not helpful or productive.

Please have your doctor check your thyroid levels and do a fasting glucose 2 hour test. Low thyroid or high insulin levels (or in my case, both) could be contributing to the overall crappy feeling. I hope you feel better soon...

I wake up exhausted! :tongue_smilie: My alarm goes off at 5:45 so that I can have time alone with God (and to make coffee) before my kids are up. Every morning I stand up and turn off the alarm (which is not next to our bed) and debate going back to sleep. And then I remind myself that I need to make time for my First Love (and that I can always take a nap later - which I never do, but the thought alone is comforting).

This all wouldn't be so bad if I could just make myself go to sleep earlier!

I wake up tired. I start feeling more normal after an hour or two. I won't say I've never woken up nervous, because it has probably happened occasionally... such as after a bad dream, or maybe on days where I had a big test coming up, or maybe on moving days. It is really rare, though.

If I've been drinking coffee lately (shich I have...) I feel tired and I need a cuppa joe. If I am off caffeine, I wake up happy and refreshed.

I don't think it's normal to wake up nervous every day.

On the other hand, my hair has been thinning a lot lately! I'm following a lot of the advice given on your previous thread.

Good luck getting to the bottom of this!

I have insomnia so I don't wake up rested UNLESS I've taken medication/herbs and slept well.

Do you know why you wake up feeling nervous? Could it be that your dh is away, or do you feel your workload is too great? Are your curriculum choices teacher friendly or teacher intensive?

I didn't wake up nervous until I adopted a child with behavioral issues. Some days I just can't get out of bed. I know that once I do I have to face her, and it's not something I look forward to. I'm SO THANKFUL that I haven't felt that in awhile now and things are going well.

There must be something in your life overwhelming you. Try to figure out what it is so that you don't have that feeling in the morning!

I actually had a doctor ask me what I did for a living, and when he found out I was a SAHM he told me to get a job so I didn't have the time to sit at home and dream up illnesses that I didn't have. He was an *ss and I've been on high blood pressure meds since that day! I guess I dreamed up high BP and caused it.

Not nervous unless I have to go into the city or have company coming. Sometimes tired if I haven't slept. Usually thinking "here we go again" with the schoolwork, housework, etc. Coffee now!

I agree you should have a thorough work-up to see what's going on and not just treat individual symptoms.

Well, if I ever get enough sleep I wake up just shy of great. Just toward the end of my 20 nights of Ambien-induced slumber I was feeling like my old self.

If I'm not sleeping I am tired. If you read the thread about a month ago it was actually getting to the point I think I was suffering from depression.

I know if we lived in a society that did not dictate a normal awake time and a normal not awake time I'd be okay. I'd stay up until 2, 3 or 4 am and sleep until I couldn't any more. To start that would be getting up around 1 or 2 pm.

I am looking forward to the day dd is independent enough and old enough for that to happen.

Ok hon, first thing you need to do is find a dr. that will put you on a permanant dose of Ambien. I have been taking it for about five years and sometimes I have spells where I get five or six hours of sleep per night for a month and then other times when I only get two or three a night. The Ambien has no effect on how much I sleep but if I don't have it, I don't sleep at all. If you can't find a regular dr. who will manage it then find a pdoc who will. I know the terrible desperate feeling of having not sleep in a week and have no Ambien and knowing that you aren't going to sleep tongiht either.

Second, do your very best to adjust your schedule to your natural cycle. That is one of the great things about homeschooling. I do my best when I go to bed around two or three and sleep til six when I have to get the kids up and off and then I go back to bed at eight and sleep until hopefully 10:30 or 11:00. Also try to do this without caffiene. I know it is so tempting to try and use caffiene to get you up and going but the half life of caffiene is eight hours so come seven at night when you should start winding down you are getting a second wind. I have pretty much cut caffiene unless I need to drive somehwere and I do think I am doing better. And of course, you can always talk to me. You know I will be awake to keep you company. :grouphug:
