  1. My 15 year old is in her 3rd year of German with WTMA and loves it. She has learned so much!
  2. Same. Mr. Hummell is great - my daughter has him this year for Creative Writing and a few years ago for Expository 1 and he's one of her favorites, but she really like Ms. Henry too and is having a great year.
  3. Never mind. Wouldn't you know, as soon as I posted, she gets in.
  4. Is anyone else not able to get into classes this morning? DO gets an error message when she tries to get in for her class this morning.
  5. Thank you, that's basically what I started doing, then thought I'd ask here. That would be great if you find the link to the Zinn guide - thanks!
  6. I'm just curious, has anyone used the Hakim History of US books (not the concise edition) along with Zinn's A Young People's History of the Untied States? I'm planning to use these books for American History next year, and wanted to know before I sit down to do it, if someone has already matched up the Zinn chapters with the Hakim books. I'd love to see what you have if you've done it.
  7. I vote for Brambles Academy. Although we rarely use it, ours is Avalon Academy. Avalon is the street I grew up on. I would have used our street now, but it's just a boring old number. My favorite is my friend's. "Last name" School for Wayward Boys.
  8. I think I want to do Mississippi history over the summer with my rising 7th grader. Before I start researching resources, are there any state history programs already out there? Or do most people pull it together themselves? Any suggestions or tips?
  9. I have felt that way about all the previous years, but have found the pre algebra explanations much more thorough. I do find I have to remind myself to go back and read the teaching tips in the teacher's manual. There's lots of good information in there that usually clears up any questions I might have.
  10. My dd is finishing it up now, and has used Horizons from 1st grade as well. We did hit a wall about 1/4 way through. I can't remember what it was now, but we stopped and she did Derek Owens pre algebra before returning to finish Horizons. It's been a good fit for her. I was happy with the teacher's manual, it's much better than the ones for the lower grades, which is great for a non-mathy mom like me. I feel it's pretty challenging, and looking at Foersters, which we plan to use for algebra, is laying a nice foundation and she'll be well prepared for the transition. I know you wanted to hear from people who don't like it, but I wanted to share our experience as someone who has also used it from the beginning. :)
  11. Thank you for this - I don't know why I didn't think to just go over the chapter on our own or use khan. I went straight to, "Oh no, it's not there! What will we do!" D'oh!
  12. I ordered the Algebra 1 Home Study Companion from Math Without Borders. My version of the textbook has the chapter on BASIC programming which MWB left off. I'm fine with that. They have replaced it with a chapter I don't have - Linear Functions, Scattered Data and Probability. Is skipping that chapter going to be a problem, or should I look for a copy that has it? I hate to have to get a whole new book for a short four lesson chapter. Thoughts?
  13. Not direct, but we share some grandparents. Her great grandparents are my 3x great grandparents. She is my 2nd cousin twice removed. On my maternal grandfather's side. http://www.biography.com/people/bonnie-parker-9542045 Yes, my maternal grandmother's line goes back to Charlemagne as well.
  14. DD, who is in 6th grade this year is doing Medieval right now - she's also in the expository 1 class. I had the same concerns as you since we'd already been through SOTW, and honestly, the first few weeks I was ready to drop it because all they did was read from the book and take the chapter tests. Things did pick up though and they do outline and write a research paper every 5 or 6 chapters I believe. They also keep a timeline. She has really enjoyed the class and the instructor. That said, I don't think we'll continue with history in the fall because we feel we can manage the same ting at home. We will continue on to Expository 2 though. Hope that helps. :)
  15. Hi Stanleyfamily, welcome to the forums. :001_smile: Sometimes you have to be very specific in a search. It won't let me link my search, but if you do an advanced search (the little gear symbol by the tool bar) and search Robinson and choose Titles Only, you will get several past threads on the topic. Hope that helps.
  16. My dd is in the medieval class this year. I was concerned at first, because it felt like they were just reading the chapters and taking the quiz. I can do that at home - and did the first time we did SOTW.Things got ramped up this week though. They started their timelines, and are researching and writing a paper on a topic they've read about in the first few chapters. They have good discussions each week too that dd looks forward to. Which writing class is ds in? Dr is also taking expository 1 with Mr Hummell and loves it!
  17. :grouphug: No advice, just hugs and understanding. I'm dealing with very similar circumstances with my parents and it's hard, especially being 2000 miles away.
  18. :iagree: My daughter is loving this class as well. I was concerned about the workshop method, but it seems to be a good fit for her and she is enjoying it. She feels like the material is a good fit. We were concerned it might be too easy, but looking ahead, feel it will be challenging, but not frustratingly so. She hasn't had much writing instruction, but writing seems to come naturally to her. She is excited about this class!
  19. Thank you all so much - I knew if I asked, y'all would jog my memory. For some reason I just couldn't see to reduce 99/22!
  20. We're solving for x in proportions today and I am having a hard time understanding how they came up with the answer they did. I admit, math isn't my strong suit, but I used to be pretty good at these. I don't know if I just haven't had enough coffee, or have really completely forgotten how these work. I'm good all the way up until they divide 99 by 22. How are they getting 9/2? Okay, my example didn't paste correctly. Anyway, the original problem is 11/22 = x/9. How are they getting 9/2?
  21. But if you do want to disect without the ick factor, I ran across this yesterday. http://www.boredpanda.com/knit-animal-dissection-anatomy-emily-stoneking-aknitomy/
  22. Yes, and if we decide not to do the online classes in the fall, we will just go straight into algebra upon finish her current program. I will check these out, thanks!
