BeckyFL
I had no idea what they were about. As I was listening to the oldies station (70's and 80's) at physical therapy I realized that I knew all the words to these songs when I was young, but I had no idea what they meant. I wonder what my mom thought as I was singing along in the car? Â Oh, what a night, late December back in '63 What a very special time for me As I remember what a night! Oh what a night, You know I didn't even know her name But I was never gonna be the same What a lady, what a night! Oh, I got a funny feeling when she walked in the room And I, as I recall it ended much too soon Oh what a night, Hypnotizing, mesmerizing me She was everything I dreamed she'd be Sweet surrender, what a night! I felt a rush like a rolling ball of thunder Spinning my head around and taking my body under (Oh what a night!) Oh, I got a funny feeling when she walked in the room And I, as I recall it ended much too soon Oh what a night! Doo dit doo dit dit doo dit doo dit dit Oh what a night! Doo dit doo dit dit doo dit doo dit dit Oh what a night! Doo dit doo dit dit doo dit doo dit dit Oh what a night! Doo dit doo dit dit doo dit doo dit dit Oh what a night,
Jennifer in MI
I KNOW!!!!!! When I listen to some of the 80s songs from my middle/high school years, I absolutely CRINGE!!!! Â The other day, we were in the car and a song came on that had a fun tune. I was humming along with it. My 14 yo ds asked me, "Um. Mom. Do you KNOW what this song is about???" Nope!!! It was to the tune of, "There's a place in France . . . " Remember that song? Well, it's a REALLY dirty song now!!! Anyway, apparently, my boys are much more aware of what they are singing than I was in the 80s! Yikes! Luckily, my kids are embarrassed by those lyrics and don't want to listen to it (at least not when I'm in the car!).
kalanamak
Well, we all knew what it meant, but I remember singing White Rabbit, very loudly, out the car window on a long trip up Queensland (the roads were one lane paved and two gravel ditches) in 1968: Â One pill makes you larger and One pill makes you small and The ones that mother gives you Don't do anything at all. Spy Car
I knew what this one was about at time.  I gave a girl a ride in my wagon She crawled in and took control She was tired 'cause her mind was a-draggin' I said, get some sleep and dream of rock and roll  'Cause like a princess she was layin' there Moonlight dancin' off her hair She woke up and took me by the hand She's gonna love me in my Chevy van And that's all right with me  Her young face was like that of an angel Her long legs were tanned and brown Better keep your eyes on the road, son Better slow this vehicle down  'Cause like a princess she was layin' there Moonlight dancin' off her hair She woke up and took me by the hand We made love in my Chevy van And that's all right with me  I put her out in a town that was so small You could throw a rock from end to end A dirt-road main street, she walked off in bare feet It's a shame I won't be passin' through again  'Cause like a princess she was layin' there Moonlight dancin' off her hair She woke up and took me by the hand We made love in my Chevy van And that's all right with me  'Cause like a princess she was layin' there Moonlight dancin' off her hair She woke up and took me by the hand We made love in my Chevy van And that's all right with me
IsabelC
I didn't really listen to popular music until I was a bit older, but I do remember when I was little and I heard this:I'm sad to say, I'm on my way, won't be back for many a day. My heart is down, my head is turning around, I had to leave a little girl in Kingston Town. Because there is a suburb called Kingston near where we lived, I assumed that it was about a parent who left her child there, and I worried about why the parent would do this, and what happened to the little girl, and would my mother leave me a few suburbs away if I was too naughty. Jennay
I distinctly remember prancing around my room singing Madonna's "Like a Virgin" while my mom was in the next room. Jan in SC
As a child, I had a weakness for "embellishing" the truth! One time I told a group of friends that I was a back-up singer for music groups. Sadly, the song I chose to lie about was .... Afternoon Delight!!! Â I was so embarrassed when I was older and I realized what that song described. I still see a couple of those people and almost forty years later I am completely embarrassed!! TXMomof4
I was recently going through a box from highschool - it had some of my favorite cds, letters, etc. Once of those cds was Nine Inch Nails. I was absolutely HORRIFIED at the lyrics! I honestly don't believe my mother ever heard what I was listening to or she might have had a heart attack! Â My dds were in the house and I'm jumping across the room to turn off the music before they got in my room. And people complain about rap lyrics?!?! BMW
My kids laugh a lot about when I don't catch on to the meaning of some songs... Â For a long time I thought "Shut up and Drive" was a song written by a popular singer to send out the message to stay off your cell phones on the road... nope... that wasn't what was going on!!! My teens had a great laugh over this!! Â I cannot believe my mom didn't have a talk with me about what I was singing when I was a teen... I had Marvin Gaye's popular song nailed! Now if I hear it, I wonder, "what was I thinking?' "What was my mom thinking?" How could I not know THAT?
JoyfulMama
I knew what the music was saying. And much of it I wouldn't have written myself. Yet I enjoyed the music, as I loved to dance. As a teen, I felt it ridiculous that adults believed that music lyrics would influence my actions. Just because I sang a song about getting down and dirty with someone didn't mean I was going to play out the song because the song said so. I give my kids more credit than that, too. Music is a form of expression and entertainment, as is television. I don't mimic my life after tv shows/characters, either.

pdalley
Any of the music from Grease - except Sandy and Danny's solos. Â Most of the 80's hair metal that I still adore. I never heard anything 'satanic' in hair metal. Basically it was like 'get wasted, party on'. And I didn't do any of those things even if I did sing along with it at the top of my lungs. Oy.  Tonight, I celebrate my love for you It seems the natural thing to do Tonight, no one's gonna find us We'll leave the world behind us When I make love to you Tonight, I celebrate my love for you And hope that deep inside you feel it too Tonight, our spirits will be climbing To a sky lit up with diamonds When I make love to you Tonight  Tonight, I celebrate my love for you (ooh-ooh) And that midnight sun Is gonna come shining through (ooh-ooh) Tonight, there'll be no distance between us What I want most to do Is to get close to you Tonight  Tonight, I celebrate my love for you And soon this old world will seem brand new Tonight, we will both discover How friends turn into lovers When I make love to you  Tonight, I celebrate my love for you (ooh-ooh) And that midnight sun Is gonna come shining through (ooh-ooh) Tonight, there'll be no distance between us What I want most to do Is to get close to you  Tonight, I celebrate my love for you Tonight Edited October 13, 2010 by LibraryLover

Even back in the 80's, I always thought that their songs were intended to laugh at people who get so uptight about anything less than choirboy-esque lyrics.  And movies - my son was just telling me yesterday that he was in the mood to watch the Back to the Future series again. I confessed that I had loved them growing up, and then when we first showed them to our children, I was appalled at how much swearing there was. I didn't remember any of that! I told him that of course the irony is that had I not said anything to them, as adults they probably wouldn't have remembered the bad language at all, but since I had been shocked and pointed it out, now it will be one of the things that stands out for them. <headsmack>

coffeefreak
Does she walk? Does she talk? Does she come complete? My homeroom homeroom angel Always pulled me from my seat  She was pure like snowflakes No one could ever stain The memory of my angel Could never cause me pain  Years go by I'm lookin' through a girly magazine And there's my homeroom angel on the pages in-between  CHORUS: My blood runs cold My memory has just been sold My angel is the centerfold Angel is the centerfold (Repeat)  Slipped me notes under the desk While I was thinkin' about her dress I was shy I turned away Before she caught my eye  I was shakin' in my shoes Whenever she flashed those baby-blues Something had a hold on me When angel passed close by  Those soft and fuzzy sweaters Too magical to touch Too see her in that negligee Is really just too much  CHORUS  It's okay I understand This ain't no never-never land I hope that when this issue's gone I'll see you when your clothes are on  Take you car, Yes we will We'll take your car and drive it We'll take it to a motel room And take 'em off in private  A part of me has just been ripped The pages from my mind are stripped Oh no, I can't deny it Oh yea, I guess I gotta buy it!  I was in College before I figured this one out   I also walked around singing "Just a Jigalo" when David Lee Roth released it. WarriorMama
This one is a give-away: Living easy, living free Season ticket on a one-way ride Asking nothing, leave me be Taking everything in my stride Don't need reason, don't need rhyme Ain't nothing I would rather do Going down, party time My friends are gonna be there too I'm on the highway to hell No stop signs, speed limit Nobody's gonna slow me down Like a wheel, gonna spin it Nobody's gonna mess me round Hey Satan, payed my dues Playing in a rocking band Hey Momma, look at me I'm on my way to the promised land I'm on the highway to hell (Don't stop me) And I'm going down, all the way down I'm on the highway to hell  What, doesn't everybody's first-grader rock out to AC/DC? Mine does! :tongue_smilie:
posybuddy
Yes, I do ;) :D Bill  Heh. I used to think this was patently self-evident about AC/DC (I mean, if *I* figured it out back in 9th grade), but then I met someone who took their lyrics very, very seriously, and was pretty sure they were The Most Evil Band Ever. So then, naturally, I wondered if I was the one who was missing something obvious.  But ultimately, I decided that their music was so darned awesome I just didn't care. ;)

I take the blame for AC/DC but point the finger at my husband for Iron Maiden...:D  Hilarious! My daughter is unaware of Percy Jackson as of yet. I did however recently realize she'd had too much Harry Potter exposure when she suggested naming the new baby Lord Voldemort.
TanuvasaMama
I didn't realize what the songs were about, even though I knew all the words, until I started playing guitar hero. The songs are great, but then I started listening to the words...woah. Now I finally know what the song "Slow Ride" is all about...I'd just pictured a bunch of bikers driving around on a sunday drive!!! Yeah, I was wrong... Â I was a pretty wild teen, but I admit reading this thread has opened my eyes! I had NO IDEA...my sharona...the joker...celebrate my love...0_0

It's stalker city. Ditto 'Layla' by Derek and The Dominoes (Clapton).
Spy Car
How about the Jethro Tull classic album "Aqualung" with its letcherous pedophile and willing victim (Cross-eyed Mary)? dirty ethel rackham
I love lots of kinds of music. All sorts of songs. Metal, pop, whatever. Â But, at heart, the music that I love the best, the absolute best, is music from the 50's. It took me a long time to figure out why, and I think it's because most of it (but not all) is innocent. If there is anything un-innocent in it, it's usually carefully hidden. And I'm just Pollyanna enough that I like the innocence of it. Â Only my husband knows this about me. I won't tell anyone IRL because, honestly--who likes stuff from the 50's? Only nerds! I don't want anyone to know I'm a nerd! Â Me! Me! I'll be nerdy with you. I love all those songs from the '50's. I had an old boyfriend who was into oldies (that was what we called oldies back then) and he turned me on to all that great music.
kiana
I remember my sister singing 'Cecilia' and my father saying 'OMG, I had NO idea that the lyrics went like THAT!' Â But how's about 'Angel of the Morning'?
