  1. I did this one (the 10 day detox) a year ago. It wasn't presented in a way that said my gut needed cleansing from parasites or whatever other detox programs try to sell you on. This was focused on getting off of sugar. I had been wanting to stop depending so much on sugar for months before I got up the nerve to start it. I really needed a crutch to mentally get going on the changes I wanted to make, and this did the job for me. I followed it faithfully for the 10 days. Like I said, it was my crutch! Stopping sugar was a head game as much as anything else for me and I really wanted hand holding. I have told people that there is nothing necessarily groundbreaking in this book, but it was what I was able to use at the time. There are many other similar books and programs out there. I think that finding the one that you are able to stick to is what matters. If I recall correctly the author mentions that the restrictions are pretty extreme for the 10 days and talks about how to see how you feel adding things back in after you are through with the 10 days. I lost 7 pounds over that time and have continued to keep sugar to a minimum in my diet for the past year, although definitely not to the extreme of those 10 days. Since then I have been able to work out what works for me in my eating so that I really ended up with a sustainable lifestyle change.
  2. green chilis sopaipillas my grandparents- I spent almost every summer growing up there. I think of a lot of other things, too, but those were the first three that came to mind.
  3. Me! I recently started getting terrible stomach aches about an hour after drinking smoothies and couldn't figure out what was causing it. I tried changing up the recipe in case it was dairy or something but the stomach aches kept coming. I didn't piece it together until I ate an actual banana. About an hour later I had excruciating stomach cramps, chills, vomiting, etc... It lasted about 45 min. to an hour. I was so miserable. I tried googling it and didn't get very much information about it being an allergy though. At least for me, there is no itchiness or other symptoms. Just a terrible terrible stomach reaction. All I know is that I have no desire to eat bananas anymore!
  4. This is so interesting. I love seeing the variety of languages that could be spoken here on this board! I think I emphasized the spoken part of it because that is what is currently motivating me to become more proficient at Spanish. I studied it for 5 or 6 years in school, but like others here I didn't keep it up. Now I am looking around me and seeing all these people who I could be interacting with instead of just smiling at awkwardly. I have requested a program from the library to get myself started again! For those of you who learned a language well in school, or who didn't learn a language well despite having it taught in school, what do you think the difference is? A family member just ran across a family visiting the U.S. who could all speak Dutch, English, and French. Is language learning more non-negotiable in other countries? I wonder if the fact that a lot of our languages are offered as "electives" changes the way we think of them as students. Or is it because some places teach a number of languages from the time the children start school, and in others it is something to start when students are coming into their teens?
  5. fairly well? As in, you feel confident having a conversation with native speakers beyond asking things like their name or where the restroom is. What can you speak, and where did you learn? I am feeling like a slacker lately for only speaking English. I am in a town with a large number of Spanish speakers, and I would love to be able to do things like chat with the Spanish speaking mom at the playground. I am making it a goal to get better! I would also really like my kids to speak Spanish as well. I think I would need a tutor for that, though!
  6. Pocketbook reminded me of what my grandma says. She always has a billfold. I have never known anyone else to have one (although AAS uses the word in one of the levels). She also refers to the commode in the bathroom. I never understood why she didn't just call it a toilet like everyone else.
  7. I visited years ago and loved it. Gorgeous. I have heard there is a ton of snow in the winter.
  8. I agree with Audrey. I think he needs something more of an explanation. My gut feeling is that if I were that age, I sure would never let something like that go. I would go the rest of my life remembering my mom brushing it off, and wondering what it was that she was hiding. What a hard spot to be in!
  9. I like calling them sharts the best. And to for the op, yes, I still occasionally remember things that happened 10 or 20 years ago and feel the same embarrassment!
  10. When you get nauseous while riding a carousel (or while swinging :001_huh: ) When you ask your kid to roll up the car window and they ask you what you are talking about!
  11. We have a few new frogs as well. We have been scouring the neighborhood for aphid covered weeds. We are releasing them soon since we can't find many more aphids!
  12. Congrats! He is so cute! We found that glass pyrex dishes were great for feeding crickets. For some reason they don't really jump out of them. Growing beardies eat tons (and I mean tons) of crickets. We ended up buying them in bulk on-line. We used Ghanns but there are other companies as well. You might want to check out beardeddragon.org. They have all the information you could ever want or need, as well as a lot of pictures of bearded dragons! :) Have fun with your new addition!
  13. I don't have an answer to your question, so I am glad that there are people here who can help you! I have never heard of this type of class and am intrigued. I do love the thread title though, because every time I read it I see "Care Bear Class." It makes me want to find a cute Care Bear shirt to wear.
  14. This made me think of the line in the movie Madagascar where Marty is running away from Alex. "Oh, sugar, honey, iced tea!" I only watched that 800 times with my kids before catching on.
  15. Mine has really liquidy poop when I have fed her carrots. It did throw me off the first time I saw it!
  16. :iagree: I have been reading her lately as well. There is some great information there.
  17. Do a search for a longline bra on amazon. It seems similar to what she is describing. Good luck!
  18. I just wanted to encourage you about your 9 year old. My 9 yo and I are in week 8 of c25k and have come so far! I know all kids are different, but I really have to work on my expectations while running with my son. I can't necessarily push myself to finish like I would alone. I am figuring out the balance between pushing myself to meet my goals while also encouraging him to run longer/farther without making it stressful and miserable for him. I want him to push himself but still have a good time. It has really been fun to get out and run with him!
  19. I have used them with my two youngest at Disneyland. One is a two year old, the other is a quietly independent four year old who will silently leave to go wherever looks interesting to him before you realize that he isn't standing there anymore. I bought these super cute backpacks from a seller on e-bay (it is a littlelife daysack) that look like normal backpacks (no cutesy animals) but have detachable leashes. They are large enough for water bottles or a change of clothes and are great on hikes as well! I was recently at a museum and was kicking myself that I didn't thing to bring them! I didn't notice any looks, but I wouldn't have cared if I had. My peace of mind and an enjoyable trip is worth a lot!
  20. I looked up French history at that point, too. Because clearly Hugo didn't explain enough! lol I just finished last week and felt so accomplished! I don't think I ever felt lost with regards to the characters or plot, but I know I didn't "get" everything. I think it would have been fun to read it in french (I hardly know a word of it). Just from the few notes I read, there were quite a few places where Hugo made plays on words that just didn't translate well into English. It didn't detract from the story, but it would have been fun to understand them. I also skimmed a lot when he got to comparing different political figures, French landmarks, or streets. There was that long section about Paris being like the world that I understood very little of. I just told Hugo that I believed him since I didn't relate to any of his many comparisons! I am so glad that I read this book. Overall I really enjoyed it. I do think it was the most challenging book I have read in a long time. I need some brain candy now!
  21. Here is one more suggestion that I don't see already mentioned. It worked with my youngest, but I don't think I tried it with my older kids. Dh took over nighttime duty for those three. But since dd is so verbal it really worked to explain to her that milky (or whatever you call it) is night night and that she could have some in the morning. For us 6:00am was my time. If she asked at midnight, or 2, or 5 I would say something like "Milky is sleeping! You can have some when it is time to wake up." Then I would usually offer some other form of comfort like hugs, or backrubs, or a sip of water. She might have complained a little, but no more than if I had told her that she couldn't have something she wanted at any other time of day (no, you are not getting a cookie half an hour before dinner). If she asked after that then yes! Milky is awake!
  22. So many good books are being read! I am just going to update weekly until I get through Les Mis. Last week I was at 33%, today I am at 48%. A little more than 10% a week? This is going to take me awhile unless I pick up the pace! I am going to do a little happy dance when I see that I am past the halfway point. I am totally enjoying it though. I start laughing now every time I read something about needing to write "a short aside" regarding a topic or person. Of course you do, Hugo! :)
  23. I am reading Les Mis right now. I wanted to try to get through it before it leaves theaters so I can see the movie after the book, just for the challenge of it, I think. I saw the play years ago. I am a little over 30% through according to my kindle app! I might have to give in and go see the movie first so I don't miss it!
  24. I looked at a lot of those reviews, too. The version that seemed to get the best reviews isn't available on kindle, and I was going for cheap! I ended up choosing the free version. It does have a working table of contents. If I lost my place without that I would be in trouble! The text itself is in line with other cheap/free kindle books I have read. I am about a third of the way through and only noticed one error in the text so far, "be" that should have been "he." I am sure there have probably been others but nothing that has distracted me from the story. I really am enjoying it! Happy reading with whatever you choose!
