Getting a second shot today, I'll see if it affects my pretty severe tinnitus.  Mine is definitely worse from coffee, which means it's worse every day!

I don't think it's any worse.  Second Pfizer last week.

I developed tinnitus 2 weeks after the first moderna.  4 weeks later still there, no better no worse

This is what is concerning to me.  The FB group I am in now has 900 members.  I am holding off on the vaccine for now.

Eh, if I might get tinnitus from Covid or I might get tinnitus from the vaccine, I’m going with the option significantly less likely to make me dead. 😜 💉

I have had tinnitus flare ups for several years. Most of the time, its like the sound from a sea shell placed up to your ear. Other times, pretty loud and bothersome. In March of this year I took my second Pfizer vaccine. Two days later, the ringing in my right ear got louder and louder, at times sounding like a hearing aid that was not adjusted properly. By late evening, I had lost all hearing in my right ear. Have been to an ENT and nothing looks out of the ordinary. I was placed on a very large dose of steroids to try to bring my hearing back but that failed; only made my diabetes numbers go through the roof. I now have an appointment with a neurologist at MUSC. Hearing has not come back yet and the tinnitus is awful. Very, very loud. My daughter is a RN in Charleston, S. C. and their practice has seen several cases of hearing loss after Covid vaccine. The ENT`s in Charleston has now given this hearing loss a name. BTW, I failed to mention that my hearing in my left ear is at 65-70% loss. I honestly can not say with 100% certainty that the Pfizer vaccine did this but really makes you think! Especially when other cases are showing up. Good luck to all.

I’m on the same group, realize the majority of people polled joined already having existing tinnitus. That group is downright crazy with some of the assumptions, and lists of supplements and medications some people are taking is unreal. I can’t spend much time there day to day.  I didn’t develop my tinnitus until after my second shot but I’ve since had three of my children vaccinated, two more to go, without problems.  My husband has had severe tinnitus for 15 years and is fully vaccinated with no change. I expect to take a booster eventually. The risk from vaccine as reported to date, and the risk from covid itself are very far apart. 15% of people with covid have tinnitus or hearing loss, not to mention all the other risk. I also wonder about the combination of vaccine inflammation during peak allergy season for so many people. Anyway, take that group with a large grain of salt.

ETA: they scheduled my hearing test to determine if there is any hearing loss, but my kids swear I hear fine. 😆 🤞

I was wondering about this as well.

But I do think a lot of people are having legitimate issues.  Many are reporting that their ENTs are seeing more and more of this.  I asked my FB friends and had several report issues with tinnitus.  One is going to have an MRI next week (although I do not think it will show anything).

Out of what, almost 150 million people vaccinated in the US, and many of those 900 already had tinnitus?

Some did have tinnitus prior, but it was a very low level (like me).  They report it going from a 1/10 to 9-10/10.  Not all tinnitus is the same volume.  Probably about half have no previous issue with tinnitus.  People are reporting that it is so loud it is like a siren and they can not sleep.  These people are not anti-vax people.  Many were happy to get the vaccine, and some are going ahead with the second dose.  Many of their ENTs are reporting an uptick in people with tinnitus/hearing loss after the vaccine.  I asked on my own FB page and several have reported similar symptoms.  Others are also reporting balance issues and dizziness (this happened to one of my friends who is young and healthy).  The 900 does not represent everyone who has had issues (none of my FB friends that had this issue are in the group).  It only represents people who sought out a FB group for support.

I am in the healthcare field, so I completely understand that this does not necessarily mean the vaccine caused this.  And I also know that viruses can do the same (the doctors think a virus caused the muscle twitch I have in my ear by causing nerve damage).  I just really do not want anything to get worse.  It took me two years to accommodate  to the noise in my ears, and months to get over the dizziness I experienced.  I don't want to have to go through that again.

I have tinnitus in both ears (as well as eustachian tube dysfunction in one ear).  I've had the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine and noticed no change.  I'll try to remember to come back and update after the second dose (which will be on Saturday).

I said I'd update.

No increased tinnitus after the second dose.  I had a lot of other things, but not that.

You might research whether HBOT can reverse this. But don't wait long, because the studies I've read just overall are that it has to be treated within the first 6 months.

It's been a month now since my second Moderna vaccine.  I don't have any change in my tinnitus.  I'm on a cancellation list to see an audiologist, otherwise that's a few weeks away yet.

I spend little time on the FB group.  The polls show most of these people had existing tinnitus, and it's become very anti-vaccine lately.  I'm following to hear about the specialist from Mayo that also has tinnitus post-vaccine to find out if he had any suggestions.  There do seem to be a lot of people lately with success stories and recoveries.  There are also a variety of conditions, including those with herpes and shingles that appear to be reactivated that are causing some of the symptoms.  I don't think there is a single reason behind the tinnitus in the people there.  I see several distinct groups presenting.

I am working to cut down the medications needed for sleep, with some success.  Usually I can't fall asleep on that ear, but work my way there in the middle of the night without waking myself up now.  I definitely notice some change in my hearing and cannot wear my earbuds in that ear for audiobooks and music.  I'm slowly learning to live with it by not focusing on it.  (I have enough other stuff going on right now.)  My DS16 received his first Pfizer dose this week, so we are 6/7 for first doses and will be 4/7 fully vaccinated this coming week.  🤞

I'll update again when I know more.

  • 4 weeks later...

It’s been two weeks since my second Moderna vaccine, and I’m experiencing tinnitus. I’m 19 years old, and the static in my ears has become unbearable, mostly when I’m trying to sleep. I noticed that my ears felt a little ‘weird’ sometime within the past few weeks, but I couldn’t put my finger on it and didn’t think much of it. I returned from college recently, and that’s when it hit me that something very terrible had happened. In my dorm, our AC was pretty loud, so that served as a white noise machine and prevented me from realizing how bad the tinnitus was... now that I’m back, I have difficulty falling asleep without white noise because of this constant din. It’s driving me crazy, and it won’t go away.

My initial 2nd vaccine immune response was significantly more powerful than anything my friends’ experienced (if they experienced any symptoms at all after 2nd dose,) so maybe that has something to do with it. I’m also a bit of a worrywart, but the night my 2nd dose symptoms (intense, hours-long shivering, fever, etc.) set-in, I feared I would fall asleep and never wake up.

I just hope it’s not like this forever. I’ve felt so physically run-down. I’m scared about what my future will be like if I already have ringing like this at 19. I might’ve had a little tinnitus before, maybe, but nothing like this living hell at all. I’m going to try to get an appointment with an ear doctor very soon, but from what I’ve read it doesn’t seem like there’s much anyone can do.

I wish there was more info out there about this. I’m not someone who had any pre-existing concerns... I ran cross country in high school, try to keep in shape, and I’ve never had a major health incident in my life. I’m just some random college kid :(

I treated myself. No diagnosis by a physician because I knew what it was and knew about pemf/tinnitis studies. I had been using pemf for eight years or so before tinnitis and felt very comfortable administering it myself. Many doctors In the US don't know about pemf anyway. It's used more in Europe -- Germany and Austria -- and Russia. Unfortunately, there is a lot of woo that has latched onto it as well. However, I think it's nuts that we are not using it for pain, tissue regeneration and things like tinnitis.

The reason I use the Sota is because it's one of the cheaper devices, about $500 from Amazon. We own five devices, though, including the FlexPulse which could also be used for tinnitis. IME, the Sota seemed to do a better job. It's also recommended and sold by Dr. Pawluk, an MD who researches pemf and uses it in his practice. His website is very informative if you want to learn more. Another good source is Robert Dennis's YouTube site. He developed devices for NASA that the astronauts use while in space. He also sells a few devices which would be trustworthy.

Something else that can cause tinnitis is hyperinsulinemia. It's one of those festering conditions that can eventually cause all sorts of problems.

A short article about hyperinsulinemia, tinnitis and Meniere's:

If you want to learn more about hyperinsulinemia, a good source would be Benjamin Bikman's videos on YouTube. He studies metabolic disorders and teaches at BYU. He has also written a book, Why We Get Sick, that I'd like to read this year. He's very informative.

Ah, yeah, this forum is a good source for this kind of thread.

You should definitely go see the ear doctor!! And it could still go down on its own... I know that I've had weird vaccine effects for quite a while, so fingers crossed it starts getting better 😕.

D had her second Moderna vaccine last Saturday morning. That night she had a fever and chills and general malaise. Sunday night she had such severe ear pain she was crying and did not sleep. The next day the pain was gone but her ear felt clogged and she has ringing. One week later she still has the clogged feeling and ringing. Hoping it goes away. No prior history of issues.

Oh wow, I missed this thread earlier. I received both doses of my Pfizer shot in March. Every now and again my ears will ring so I really didn't connect the two but it was certainly an issue for about a month. I was still able to get to sleep but it could be annoying with the constant ringing. My husband received his vaccines simultaneously and said he too had ringing in his ears when I complained. Life went on. I have no idea if there was hearing loss as I haven't tested my ears but it wasn't noticeable for daily life and the ringing went away. I didn't count the days so I can't be more specific.

Tinnitusteen,

I am sorry you are suffering. As someone who has had tinnitus for 2 years and experienced extreme distress in my early stages, let me encourage you to get some support from a forum called Tinnitus Support Message Board if you feel it would be helpful. That forum was a lifesaver for me and I still post there now to help others out.

I would stay away from Tinnitus Talk though.

Even if your tinnitus does stay, there is a natural process called habituation that will provide you with relief in the future.

Just asked my 19 year old who has always had (annoying but pretty infrequent) tinnitus (and a hearing loss in one ear) if the vaccine worsened it or affected it at all. He says no, not that he's noticed.

I was thinking about this for some reason last night and about how I had occasional tinnitus for the first time ever dating to our mystery 6 week long cough/maybe it was walking pneumonia? but the timing sure was weird-thing last March/April. I googled this morning to see if it's common to develop tinnitus after pneumonia, and I just got a bunch of results about tinnitus after covid. So. Hmm. I hate unsolveable mysteries.

I had a particular form of tinnitus (I can’t recall the name) that started during an acute very stressful life event. In addition to the roaring in my ear, paired at the same time with hyper acute hearing in some ranges, I lost hearing in other ranges, and then had a lot of vertigo. From reading about it, I attributed it to a stress/anxiety reaction that can happen and cause this kind of tinnitus. It settled down, though I had a couple shorter bouts of it during that life event. I don’t expect anxiety is the cause for most people who have it as a vaccine side effect, but I wonder if for some people with a lot of health anxiety, if addressing the anxiety might help some. Anxiety can cause some peculiar tensing of some of the ear structures, which can cause symptoms.

I definitely was not commenting on her as a person.  I do not care for her either, but that does not have anything to do with the symptoms she is experiencing.  There are many people experiencing the same thing, and I am hopeful that if more well known people let the public know about their issues the medical community will perhaps pay more attention.

I did not link any of the studies in my other posts and thought some of you might be interested.

If you want to try this, you’d want to find someone who offers a type of electromagnetic therapy called repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, rTMS, which is also used to treat depression, symptoms of schizophrenia and other brain disorders. It doesn't work immediately, more like a few months.

I have had tinnitus for years. It has been there, and I mostly hear it when I am alone and it is quiet.  Sometime after my 2nd Moderna, it was much louder, to the point I was hearing it even when the TV was on.  I had not initially made the connection to the vax, but seeing the conversation here has helped me connect the dots.

Anyway, my sinuses were acting up this week, possibly on the way to an infection. I had been slacking off my supplements, like only taking vita D every other day and not much else. So I did a hot soak in the tub with Epsom salts, and took a NAC capsule (which I have taken during the pandemic on and off to help with immunity). So in the last few days, I think I took 2 capsules, and I took a Super Quercetin capsule on a different day.  I woke up the other day, and noticed I wasn't hearing the roaring in my head like I had been for the last month since my shot.

I have been paying attention, and it is definitely not the pitch that it had been during the last month.  I really do not know if the NAC or Quercetin helped, but maybe? I am putting it out there as maybe something to try, as it is a cheap fix compared to seeing a specialist.

Tinnitus and stress...hmmm, interesting.  Actually, I started back to my swimming workouts just before I even got my first vax (going to a small college pool without a lot of people from the public and watching the college covid numbers.)  Swimming helps with stress for me and it felt so good to get back to it, so I am thinking I was not that stressed, especially by the time I got my 2nd shot. It  was just noticeably louder. I have been outdoors more because the weather has been warm and I have worked in the garden a lot, so stress seemed lower with that, too.

I was seen by an audiologist, who confirmed some hearing loss.  My neurologist gave me high dose steroids and that seems to be resolving the hearing issue. The audiologists assumed it was "normal", but I knew it wasn't, so that is a problem in my mind because there are potentially people not being treated because of this assumption.  I will have my hearing rechecked down the road, but I can already tell the difference. My tinnitus is improving slowly.  I am now 8 weeks post second shot. 🙂

I had a hearing test this afternoon and my hearing is good.  She gave me a list of things to try at home, like white noise at night when I am trying to sleep.  I will be seeing the ENT on Monday to see what she thinks.

I just wanted to give a quick update in case anyone is interested.  My appointment with the ENT was a tad bit frustrating.  The doctor was great, but didn't really have any reasons for the tinnitus.  She said it could be the vaccine but there haven't been studies into it to say one way or the other.  My ears look great, no physical problems, no hearing problems.  The good news is I think it is starting to improve a bit, although some days it is better than others.

I'm 5 months out from 1 Pfizer and still have tinnitus.  Some days are quieter than others, but the last week or so has sounded like a head full of cicadas.  At the very worst, it interfered with conversation, but for a few months now it is irritating, but liveable.  I think I've habituated some, but I know that some days it is completely gone.  Haven't had one of those days in a few weeks.

I about 8 months out from my first vaccine (Pfizer) and I am still dealing with tinnitus.  It got worse after the booster, but has lessened back to tolerable levels since then.  I think it is something I will have to learn to live with, as at this point I doubt it will be going away.  My DS got ear ringing in one ear after his booster but it only lasted a day.
