  1. @Beth S They are good if people would otherwise not floss, but they are not ideal in that the same bit of floss is in contact with all the teeth/gums, potentially spreading bacteria. When you use floss, you use a new bit between teeth, so it’s more hygienic.
  2. FYI They make metal as well as biodegradable floss picks if you want to avoid the guilt. I’ve gotten them for my mom who reports that they work just as well.
  3. We got a letter from the school district approving our transcript and that was that. Do you not have to report to the local school superintendent in Ohio? If so, just ask them to look over the transcript to make sure it meets requirements for graduation and then get it in writing. ETA we were also told we needed a GED for one school. As it happens, it was a very junior admissions person who told us that and when we went up the ladder it was straightened out (of course a GED was not needed).
  4. I’ve never seen markers that aren’t in plastic… 😉 I’d go with paper lunch bags with a pencil and a tiny notebook and/or some bulk candy. Or maybe something like those wooden paddles with elastic and a ball attached? It isn’t a party until someone risks losing an eye.
  5. Oh, and let him know that the cabin of his plane will likely be sprayed. A small thing, but it can be freaky if you’re not prepared for it.
  6. The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate The Invention of Hugo Cabret My Side of the Mountain The Wolves of Willoughby Chase From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs Basel E. Frankweiler The Earthsea Series Cold Sassy Tree eta if you’re looking for an easy French series, Les messagers du temps was a hit here Sorry for being too lazy to add the authors. Also, I can’t say I remember exactly what age these are for, I just remember they were favorites here.
  7. Yeah, I get it. FWIW, I always have to tell my big city travel doctors what I need because I’m more familiar with where I’m going than they are. What usually happens is that I tell them, they don’t believe me, and then they come back after doing a bit of research and acknowledge that I was correct. 😆
  8. @Faith-manor re typhoid vax, I’m pretty sure you can get it at CVS or Walgreens. There are also typhoid pills if the shot is hard to come by. It’s definitely something I would look into. Does his company not have a travel doctor ?
  9. I recommend an oldish book called Culinary Artistry by Dornenburg and Page. It is sort of a primer on combining flavors. Looks like they have a more recent book called The Flavor Bible. I have a friend who quite likes MasterClass cooking classes. She is an accomplished cook, but says she still learns new things/ gets ideas from watching them.
  10. More than the German and Mexican ? I didn’t know that. It’s true that I didn’t get the last one in Germany but a different European country. I was surprised, because I’d gotten the regular old one in another country the month before.
  11. Not anymore, unless they have more than one formulation. The last tin I picked up has hydrogenated rapeseed oil and I think maybe shea butter. I think the Mexican version has mineral oil though.

Where I live at least one person in that operation would be required to have gone through a food safety training program and passed an exam. Their truck would also be required to have a hand washing station. Restaurants generally have more health code violations than food trucks. You’re considering destroying someone’s livelihood for something you have no idea about. MYOB.
  13. A water-sealed fermentation pot is the easiest way to avoid this. And it makes the most satisfying bloop-bloop noise while it is fermenting. And doesn’t make the whole house smell like sauerkraut.
  14. I ferment sauerkraut in the cooler months. I have a big K&K Keramik crock that I love for this. I use it for cucumbers sometimes too. @regentrude What Amira said for the yoghurt. A simple way to keep the mix warm is to put it in a cooler with warm water. If you like thicker yogurt you can add a bit of milk powder beforehand.
  15. Ketosis can make a person much drunker much faster. Someone I know, who also usually processes alcohol normally, wound up in the ER because of this.
  16. Easiest and fastest way to have non-mashed eggs for egg salad is to push the cooked eggs through a gridded cake rack.
  17. “Don’t yuk (or icky in this case) somebody’s yum." 😉
  18. I am a label reader too. I really like what Mexico has done, which is to put big seals on the front of packages so you can immediately see if a product has excessive sugar, saturated fats, sodium, etc. It saves me a lot of time—no more poring over labels. I’m guessing the US would never go for something like that.
  19. We have Xootr scooters. They’re a lot sturdier than Razors, so no wiping out on uneven surfaces. They fold easily and, while not nearly as light or compact as the Razor, they are easy enough to carry around. eta just had a look at their site and see that they have some scooters that are narrower than ours (which are about the width of a skateboard), so maybe even easier to carry around.
  20. Re talking to someone at the university and the effect it would have on his application: faculty have no input at all regarding admissions at the undergrad level, so he shouldn’t worry about that.
  21. I’m very sorry for your loss.
  22. Have you tried using scarves with your current clothes for a pop of color near your face? You might be able to get away with your current clothes as long as you have something flattering near your face. They might also help you find what colors you feel best in to give you an idea for new purchases.
  23. Not with dough, but a clafoutis is barely more work than serving fruit fresh. One step up from that is fruit with sabayon thrown under the salamander for a couple minutes. I’m lazy in the summer months. I also like crisps and crumbles.
  24. If you want to get more of a feel for Philadelphia, which is a city of neighborhoods, you might want to stay at someplace like the Alexander Inn, a little boutique hotel. Points for being close to both Fergie’s and Dirty Franks. 😉 Or maybe try a hotel closer to Rittenhouse Square, which is a lovely part of town. Wander over to Delancey Street and admire the gorgeous townhouses. Or go a little further to St Alban’s Place to see where part of The Sixth Sense was filmed. (I love that neighborhood.) The Parkway is pretty deserted at night and not great for walking around. As for mass transit, it isn’t Philadelphia’s strong point. It is a very walkable city, however. One of my favorite things to do is just wander around—there are so many neat little alleys and hidden spots. It’s also a phenomenal restaurant town, lots of little BYOBs, and there is a bar on pretty much every corner, which is very convivial. The Mütter is a really neat museum, although they’re going through some stuff right now that many people aren’t happy about. Still worth a visit. It’s very interesting and informative and really not creepy. The Penn Museum is also worth a visit, particularly if you like archaeology. The Barnes is absolutely worth a trip as well, as is the Rodin Museum. Friday nights at the Art Museum are pay as you wish, and if you’re lucky there will be a party. There are lots of fun pop-up parties in Philadelphia. Eastern State is a fun tour, and the surrounding area has tons of bars and restaurants. Go on the City Hall Tower Tour (you’ll need a ticket in advance) for great views. Personally, I’d skip the Reading Terminal, which has become something of a tourist trap, and head to John’s Roast Pork for lunch (although it’s a bit of a hike). There’s also decent Vietnamese and Mexican not far from the Italian Market. It’s really hard to *not* find good food in Philadelphia. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
