Some things I have been reading (can’t link today because trying to do that logs me out) say that 1918 flu came in two waves.

First wave was less bad, but then when people thought it was over and got complacent, it was the second wave that proved very lethal and debilitating.

There were warnings by some medical field writers that something similar could happen with Covid-19 too.

So it was a heads up not to get complacent if , for example, one is on US west coast and it seems to run through our states and Peter out.  It may well come back worse.

Dh hasn’t been nearly as concerned as me, but he did just tell me today that he’s more worried about the fall.  (I’m just trying to white knuckle March, *then I’ll think about September, lol.)

I have these soap pumps from Walmart. They are designed to turn regular hand soap into foaming. You fill it only to the bump on the bottom and then add water to the rest. It takes a day or so to turn fully foamy. It makes a filled jar last much longer. I’m sure someone can say whether or not diluted hand soap will still work effectively. There’s a pretty amber jar option I have in my kitchen.

Thanks. Looks potentially helpful here too.

I have no reason to think it would not work.

The soap dislodges oily dirt and skin oils sending debris including virus down drain in water.  It was a homeschool science unit — How soap worked. I don’t recall details but one end of chain of molecules was fats soluble and the other water soluble or something like that.  I’ll tag Dicentra as a chemistry maven in case of possible better explanation @Dicentra

Not trying to totally derail the thread, but has anyone ever used the gatorade powder? For stocking up purposes, we don't have room for a bunch of gatorade

We use it all the time in summer here.  You can also get hydralite tablets which are really good if anyone gets gastro.

My dad has a hearing aid appointment tomorrow at Costco.  That same Costco was crazy busy today.  I'm wondering if I should cancel it?  He is well now, but lives in an apartment with a lot of older residents.  I do not have any other appointments schedule for him at this time.  What would you do?  No known cases here yet.

I am reusing Bath & Body Works foaming soap dispensers for this. I put water in up to a certain level & then add liquid soap the rest of the way. I have 5 of these -- enough for my kitchen, upstairs bathroom & downstairs bathroom plus two spares. When one is out, the kids pull the spare from the closet. I refill the empty (or near empty) when I get the chance & stick it in the closet. It is mixed & ready to use when the next one empties. I use scented/colored liquid soap because it is "nicer" than the clear stuff. The kids seem to go through the jar about as often (once per week) but I'm using less liquid soap overall this way.

I would keep the appointment.  Get it over now when there are no known cases...hopefully it won't hit your area, but if it does this is one less appointment to deal with.

(I live in Seattle and thought about canceling my dental appt. but I decided to keep it.  I did ask if anyone working at the office had a cough when they called to confirm the appointment yesterday, though.)

I do this, too, using my favorite Mrs. Meyer's dish soap (radish scent). One inch of dish soap and fill it to the top with water. Works really well!

We live near Washington DC, which is very busy and near several international airports.  It's just a matter of time 😞.

But...I'll take him.  DS has an orthodontist appt tomorrow too.  I have a colonoscopy next week and, if they are going to cancel that, it'd better be before I start the prep -- LOL.  After that, we don't have any appointments scheduled until April.  I think we'll know what is happening here by then!

Oh wow...the prep.  After the reports of people buying all the toilet paper you'd better make sure you've got a good supply at home or else reschedule!

My stash from CVS. Went there for hydrocortisone cream for my allergy but bought these instead for $9.99 total. The hydrocortisone cream is cheaper at Target and Safeway.

The article I read (which sorry, I can't find right now) said that they were "isolating" sick people in the same rooms as healthy etc. so not exactly a good test of isolation protocols.

One couple that was on the ship is from our community and are family friends. He is a doctor, actually. I’ll have to ask them for more details on how things were handled on the ship. It was a very difficult time for them, especially since they aren’t spring chickens.

LOL!  I do, and the flushable wipes the ladies on here recommended, but told me not to flush -- LOL.  I also got some chicken broth, which was almost sold out, and lemon jello.

I got to talking to the manager helping out checking people out.  He said by 10:30 this morning they had over 250 people buying supplies.  Very high for a weekday.  I also got to meet an individual who told the manager that this virus was just a front to stop people from caring about the environment.  It was comical.

I have decided that I need to add white cotton gloves to my supplies.  My hands will thank me later.

They should talk to the people I have heard telling stories about "the elites" engineering this to reduce the planet's overpopulation and save the environment.

I have a foaming dispenser!  I’d forgotten about it! I got tired of paying for the foaming dispenser soap and put it in the closet.  But now I’m realizing I can use regular liquid soap mixed with water in it. Just now, I set it up in the kitchen to test. If it works well (and it sounds like it will), I’ll put it in the most used bathroom.  Thank you for the reminder. 🙂

I'd keep the appointment too, but if it were my Dad might suggest wearing gloves or at least paying very close attention to hand washing/sanitizing.

I'm actually trying to get appointments out of the way now, because I don't think it's going to get better for several months.

ETA: we're also in an area with no known cases. I'm sure it's here somewhere, though.

If my translation efforts are right it looks like Italy are planning to increase intensive care units by 50pc and sub intensive care units (?) by 100 pc

Are they going to increase their staff by 50%, too? God help those doctors and nurses.

I know in Aus there was talk of trying to bring retired health care workers back online as required.

I did read somewhere that the plan in au is that all desk job doctors and nurses may be put on wards, plus specialists will need to be functioning like doctors,

Similar to plan to what is used by  Delwp. Everyone who works for delwp and parks turn into fire-fighters when there are big fires no matter what position they usually hold.

From BBC https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-australia-51716454/coronavirus-travel-ban-in-australia-chinese-student-spends-a20000-to-get-to-class

“Karen Ji is a Chinese student studying law and commerce in Sydney, Australia.

When the Australian government announced a travel ban on arrivals from mainland China, Karen had to decide between missing the start of the university year, or the expense of travelling to a third country.

She told the BBC she ended up spending A$20,000 (£10,000; $13,200) and two weeks quarantined in Thailand to get to class on time.”

“Research Letter

March 4, 2020

Air, Surface Environmental, and Personal Protective Equipment Contamination by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) From a Symptomatic Patient

Methods

From January 24 to February 4, 2020, 3 patients at the dedicated SARS-CoV-2 outbreak center in Singapore in airborne infection isolation rooms (12 air exchanges per hour) with anterooms and bathrooms had surface environmental samples taken at 26 sites. Personal protective equipment (PPE) samples from study physicians exiting the patient rooms also were collected. Sterile premoistened swabs were used.

Air sampling was done on 2 days using SKC Universal pumps (with 37-mm filter cassettes and 0.3-μm polytetrafluoroethylene filters for 4 hours at 5 L/min) in the room and anteroom and a Sartorius MD8 microbiological sampler (with gelatin membrane filter for 15 minutes at 6 m3/h) outside the room (eFigure in the Supplement).

Specific real-time reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) targeting RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and E genes4 was used to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 (see detailed methods in the eAppendix in the Supplement). Cycle threshold values, ie, number of cycles required for the fluorescent signal to cross the threshold in RT-PCR, quantified viral load, with lower values indicating higher viral load.

Samples were collected on 5 days over a 2-week period. One patient’s room was sampled before routine cleaning and 2 patients’ rooms after routine cleaning. Twice-daily cleaning of high-touch areas was done using 5000 ppm of sodium dichloroisocyanurate. The floor was cleaned daily using 1000 ppm of sodium dichloroisocyanurate.

Clinical data (symptoms, day of illness, and RT-PCR results) and timing of cleaning were collected and correlated with sampling results. Percentage positivity was calculated for rooms with positive environmental swabs. Institutional review board approval and written informed consent were obtained as part of a larger multicenter study.

Results

Patient A’s room was sampled on days 4 and 10 of illness while the patient was still symptomatic, after routine cleaning. All samples were negative. Patient B was symptomatic on day 8 and asymptomatic on day 11 of illness; samples taken on these 2 days after routine cleaning were negative (Table 1).

Patient C, whose samples were collected before routine cleaning, had positive results, with 13 (87%) of 15 room sites (including air outlet fans) and 3 (60%) of 5 toilet sites (toilet bowl, sink, and door handle) returning positive results (Table 2). Anteroom and corridor samples were negative. Patient C had upper respiratory tract involvement with no pneumonia and had 2 positive stool samples for SARS-CoV-2 on RT-PCR despite not having diarrhea.

Patient C had greater viral shedding, with a cycle threshold value of 25.69 in nasopharyngeal samples compared with 31.31 and 35.33 in patients A and B (Table 1).

Only 1 PPE swab, from the surface of a shoe front, was positive. All other PPE swabs were negative. All air samples were negative.”

John Campbell mentioned this yesterday in his YouTube video...about the UK allowing quick re-registering of retired doctors and nurses. I thought it interesting since one might assume these people would fall into the higher at-risk age groups.

Yes I was wondering this.  Given the fatality rates in different demographics it makes sense to have younger doctors and nurses on this as much as possible.  However I guess they could use the retirees to handle non coronavirus related stuff freeing up younger doctors to work with it?

Maybe they'd get called into service in less at-risk ways? Like they'd handle the routine medical problems and the rest of the staff handle the COVID cases?

Newsom said Wednesday that public health officials plan to airlift test kits to the cruise ship off the coast and being testing passengers. The ship was returning from a 15-day cruise to Hawaii.

It is done frequently even so as a sacrifice by older experienced people for the more general good.

for similar example would be older retired engineers dealing with disasters at nuclear power reactors
