I will be homeschooling for the first time next year. My third grader will do

LOE and review MCT Island

WWE (hopefully go through level 2 in 6 months and then start level 3)

MCT lit

BA, MEP

SOTW 2

BFSU 1

French (using a mixture)

We are planning on travelling out of the country couple of times, so there will be months when we do nothing but math and reading (we will school the summer to compensate).

I am hoping I am not missing anything.

Oh, he plays piano (1 hour every day).

My current thoughts are to do the following, but it is kind of early to know for sure:

Math: Saxon

Language Arts: First Language Lessons, Writing with Ease, IEW, Spell to Write and Read, Drawn into the Heart of Reading

History: Story of the World Middle Ages

Science: Apologia Swimming Creatures

We are planning to participate in Classical Conversations, as well, and that will provide some geography, art, and Latin.

He also does piano and Awana.

I'm still trying to decide if we'd rather do My Father's World Adventures or if I could in any way combine my two kids in a Heart of Dakota program.

Well...I really should have a plan, shouldn't I? Umm... here's my tentative plan:

Math - continue with Life of Fred, living math books and any other math she feels like doing. I'm also thinking about using Crewton Ramone's website. She also works thru our Singapore textbooks when the planets are in alignment.

LA - HWOT cursive, All About Spelling 3

Five in a Row volumes 3 and 4

Unit studies - I really want to focus on unit studies and hands-on activities throughout the year.

Some of the books I'd like to read with her next year:

Story of the World 1

Boy, Have I Got Problems

Seabird

Maps and Globes

Geography from A to Z

Minn of the Mississippi

Paddle to the Sea

Pagoo

Tree in the Trail

The Librarian Who Measured the Earth

Mathematicians are People, Too

A World in a Drop of Water (and we need to buy a microscope)

RS4K Chemistry textbook

Building Blocks of Matter (4 book series)

The Mystery of the Periodic Table and a book on the elements

I will probably buy some sort of beginning chemistry set also (like the Thames and Kosmos or something similar)

If we have time, I also think she would like Compass Drawings.

Our current plans (which aren't set in stone):

MUS

McGuffey Readers (copywork, narration, grammar, and dictation)

Cheerful Cursive?

Write On

Latin--just started Prima Latina, we'll keep going with it and move to the next book

Apologia--not sure which one yet

SCM's history--Joshua Through Malachi and Ancient Greece

SCM Scripture Memory

Plus all the typical CM studies, which I usually plan a month or so at a time

Piano lessons and HS co-op

ETA: I forgot Family Time Fitness...we just started this and my older two love it! We'll be continuing with it next year.

Prima Latina (formal Hebrew study is being set aside for now)

Artist Study that will cover Audubon, Claude Monet, and Mary Cassatt

She has a strong interest in the arts, so we've been encouraging her to head that direction.

I have a super tentative plan. I mean super super tentative: ;)

Bible: BSGFAA year 3

Math: MM 3B-4A

LA: FLL 3, Finish AAS 4 (and then move onto 5 or R&S spelling maybe?), WWE 3 text/Bravewriter combo (still working this out), Considering some of the MP lit/lit guides and maybe the MP cursive copybook.

History: US History using TQ and SL readers and read alouds from Core D (the unsure part is on scope--using VP cards as a spine and incorporating a little more world or just sticking to US)

Science: ????? ES Chemistry is the current plan, but I am looking at SL science or ????

Spanish: our own games and basic immersion

Extras: piano and gymnastics

*totally subject to change! ;)

Wow. Grade 3 planning -- I can't believe I'm truly getting beyond the pre-K / K level. I kind of miss it ... *sniff.*

But planning always cheers me up, so here's what we're thinking of for next year:

Math: Beast Academy, Singapore, Life of Fred on fun days

Language Arts: WWE, MCT Town, Killgallon Elementary, AAS, lots of great books

History: SOTW

Science: BFSU 1 / 2 and science kits

Other Stuff: Song School Latin 2, Song School Greek, French, Philosophy for Kids, Artistic Pursuits

Haven't decided: Geography -- what to do?

This is what I'm thinking but, like others, still subject to change:

Bible: Read through New Testament, New Testament Lapbook by Homeschool in the Woods, and Who Is God? by Apologia (if this isn't above his head)

Math: CLE finish 2 and try to complete 3, maybe some MM to help reinforce

LA: Abeka Language 3, WWE 1/2, R&S Spelling 3, A Reason for Handwritiing Transition then Cursive, Reading Detective Beginner, English from the Roots Up--Latin roots, he might sit in on big sister's MCT Town--and I might buy Sentence Island and start them both with that for fun, we'll see.

History: Story of the World 2 with activity guide and some extra reading alongside

Science: We'll be studying Astronomy and Earth Science (including geology, meteorology and oceanography)

Language: Portuguese using Rosetta Stone

Maybe add in some Composer and Artist lapbooks and piano lessons if we can while traveling.

Math - Singapore PM 3A/B and supplementing with Beast Academy on Fridays

Grammar - MCT Island

Spelling - Rod & Staff

Writing - IEW (I'm hoping to work this in across the curriculum, but now that we are expecting in October, it may be more realistic to use a theme-based book.)

Bible Study - Sword Fighting

Latin - Prima Latina

Spanish - Getting Started with Spanish

Handwriting - either Pentime or making my own using Zaner-Bloser Online Fonts

History - SOTW 2

Science - Finish BFSU K-2 and either Astronomy or Chemistry for the second semester (right now I'm leaning toward astronomy)

Art & Music - I'm hoping to outsource these if we are moved to our new town. He has taken violin lessons, but is not taking them this year. I hope to get him started again after we move. There is also an art studio in the new town that used to do lessons for homeschooled kids during the day. I have emailed the instructor and she says she is planning on starting them up again. If she does, I will enroll him in that class for art.

Literature - MCT Alice, Peter, Mole and library books

Most of this is set and I already have most of the curriculum. Normally I would add that his extra-curriculars are soccer, Awana, and cub scouts, and I hope that he can continue those when we move, but we will have to wait and see.

Miraculously, I already have all of it minus the BA and MM 4...just waiting on those for the used curriculum sale in May...I have a curriculum problem lol. There is this fantastic used bookstore about an hour from me and it seems lots of HS's sell there, because I find the best supplemental books there!!!

okay, this is revised several times now ... A. has a structure-requiring personality, and we school 6 days/week year-round at the moment, so the 3rd grade schedule reflects this. In some cases I use multiple curricula to keep him busy & challenged without pressing him forward too fast for thriving. If we adopt a more standard schedule, I'll be dropping a lot of the extra curricula (RightStart, Classical Writing, extra grammar, &c).

MATH

Math: Singapore and some RightStart

LANGUAGE ARTS

Spelling: Evan Moor Spelling,

Grammar +: MCT, maybe start KISS, Galore Park's Junior English series, IEW's Fix-It

Handwriting: Zaner-Bloser

Writing: IEW, Winning With Writing, may incorporate Classical Writing's Aesop.

Literature: pulling from WWE selections, AO & Great Books Academy, hope to incorporate some Great Books Junior; checking out the Mensa lists referenced on this thread ...

HISTORY:

Intellego, AO, perhaps Beautiful Feet's History of Science

CIVICS/ECONOMICS/GEOGRAPHY:

Intellego for most of this; Stack the States/Stack the Countries apps; I hope to incorporate Montessori-style puzzles and cultural info

CURRENT EVENTS

Scholastic News

SCIENCE:

Intellego, AO, interest-led.

FINE ARTS:

Reading Poetry: haven't decided on our poetry readings; we'll probably start the Poetry for Young People series though.

Writing Poetry: Wishes, Lies and Dreams (didn't get to it this year -- Button's physical writing too poor, and my tot too young& demanding!)

Shakespeare: Twelfth Night (esp. via Coville's book & Animated Tales' video -- we did Midsummer Night's Dream this year)

Nature Study: weekly ventures with journals, one Shining Dawn study

Music: recorder, plan to add singing

Art: Atelier, Harmony Fine Arts, a drawing book

FOREIGN LANGUAGE: GSWL, Minimus w/Teacher's Resource book; would like to work with a second foreign language.

Aikido lessons.

and plan to start typing late this year, or early in third. Prob. whatever program Timberdoodle uses though not sure.

For my son's 3rd grade year it looks like he will be using:

MBTP 7-9 with little sis

LA a la Bravewriter

BFSU and interest led science

Cobbled together history

Other than that, I don't know! It is only February so there is still a lot of time and I am really trying hard not to panic. I need to decide if this would be a good year for some formal grammar and what that should look like, which level of MM or other math he should use if/when he outpaces the BA release schedule, and what additional science he's like, if any.

Thanks for this. Just realized that I'll be HSing a 3rd grader next year too. :)

Main Focus--LA/Science/History/Art: Waldorf-y Third Grade Blocks--OT/Creation; House Building/Shelters: etc. Drawing from Waldorf Essentials and others. Might order the Christopherus OT guide as well... unsure right now. Love the Native Dwellings series like "Houses of Snow, Skin, and Bones." Am tempted to buy E-M Native American History Pockets (yes, very un-Waldorfy).

Math: Beast Academy and either CLE or MM. We've had great success with MM, but I ordered two light units of CLE to explore it as well. We'll do some Waldorf-inspired math things like creating a Multiplication clock, etc.

Language: Continuing with Michel Thomas Egyptian Arabic, may add in French as well because the kids are interested (and Mom actually knows a bit of the language unlike Arabic)

Music: Recorder plus composer/genre per month

Handwriting: Not sure for this guy. I've had success with HWT Cursive, but his handwriting is almost Italic by default...so we may look an Italic-based cursive or even the Vimala alphabet stuff. Will also do copywork based on literature we read, famous quotes, etc.

In my curriculum-junkie mode, I also ordered the CLE Reader, as well as some Light Unit samples for Reading and LA. Not sure if I'll implement them or not.

I wish I knew. I'm having a hard time this year with deciding what we will do.

Math: Hoping to finish BA3 this summer (we started late) or we might just take it easy and leave 3D to the fall so we don't get ahead of publication schedule and just take it easy and practice some skills using Zaccaro this summer

Language Arts-

Option 1: WWE3, LoE cursive handbook, MCT Grammar, and Spelling Plus Lists D and E or E and F, depending on how our pacing goes for the rest of the year

or Option 2: WWE3, LoE Essentials- for cursive, grammar, and spelling

or Option 3: WWE3 +IEW TWSS across curriculum, MCT Grammar, LoE Cursive and Spelling Plus

Science and History:

Combo of mom directed and interest led. Still deciding on how much input I'll provide vs. how much he will direct. I've decided already that we will be doing some study of knights and Camelot for one of our history units and Aerdynamics for a science unit. I believe after that we will see where our interests takes us. Still deciding as well what will be required irt output. I could make our output for content to focus on our writing skills perhaps using IEW as a guide or let him direct his own output and keep our writing skills to be practiced within our WWE and such.

Geography:

Considering Geography unit based on Holling C. Holling book(s). I'm thinking WP has a curriculum based on this but I haven't read about it in awhile and my memory isn't the best. Need to study this more.

Literature:

Continue reading from various good/great booklists- Angelicum, Ambleside, etc. I'll make lists for both read alouds and silent reading. I plan to make this more directed next year. This year I let him have a fair amount of choice within certain guidelines. I want to look into Teaching the Classics as well.

Latin:

I have Prima Latina and hope that works this coming year but we might wait another year.
