  1. I would be interested in knowing how your DD thought they compared as instructors. My DD is considering an English major in college, so I'm hoping this senior year AP Lang class will prepare her well. Would love to know your DD's thoughts (although I realize they taught two different classes).
  2. That's wonderful! Did your dd also have Lisa Glover for AP prior to HSE?
  3. Bumping this to see if there is anyone with feedback on Lisa Glover's classes with Blue Tent...
  4. My ds took AP Lang with Brigid Thompson at Blue Tent a couple of years ago - fantastic course with an excellent instructor. Does anyone have any experience with the new teacher, Lisa Glover, for any of her BT English courses? It appears that her reading list is the same as Brigid Thompson's (which was great), so now I'm just searching for some reviews or feedback on Lisa Glover as an instructor...
  5. Yes, we did end up enrolling, and Ashley Porter has been wonderful! She is an excellent instructor who really cares about her students and their understanding of the concepts. I can recommend her without hesitation!
  6. Great news about Ashley Porter! I was inclined to stick with Blue Tent for math next year, and this seals it - thanks!
  7. Yes, we did end up enrolling. Lindsey has been wonderful with helping my daughter understand difficult concepts during her office hours outside of class. This is something that has been lacking in other online math classes we've used in the past with my older children. Having that accessibility via "face-to-face" (albeit online with cameras) makes it easier to have a dialogue with the teacher and understand concepts. Her personality is also very friendly and approachable, so my daughter doesn't feel like she is being a bother (also helped by the fact that these are "office hours" so you do not feel as if you are imposing on the instructor). My daughter struggles with math, and this is the first math class where she felt totally comfortable with the teacher. Other online math classes we've experienced have either provided that extra help through email or you have to request a meeting with the instructor. The first method has been inadequate and the second method makes her feel awkward for taking up the teacher's time. Lindsey's office hours and her personality has made math feel "doable" for her. Lindsey also gives opportunities to correct errors to earn back some points. My daughter absolutely loves her, and I only wish that she was teaching precalculus next year.
  8. Has anyone taken Algebra II with Lindsey Thompson through Blue Tent? We've been so pleased with Brigid Thompson's AP Language class that I'm taking a closer look at some other classes with Blue Tent. Thanks!
  9. We also gave it a try at the start of the school year, but then abandoned it before reaching the midyear mark. I also felt as if it moved very slowly and just didn't seem to be "enough" in terms of writing instruction. Perhaps it would be a good fit for a younger student (my daughter is 6th grade) or a student who is somewhat hesitant when it comes to writing assignments. In those cases, the instruction and pace may be a good fit. It was a flop for us though which is disappointing since the program is fairly expensive. We went back to using some Writing and Rhetoric chapters and certain writing assignments from her Rod and Staff grammar book. For next year, we are going to move on to the Lively Art of Writing which I've found is a great guide to writing instruction for middle school and older students.
  10. Hmmmm....that is a tough one. I would say yes for an 8th grader, but no for a 6th grader. Seventh grade to me seems that grey area where it might depend on the type of 7th grader you have. For an advanced 7th grader, it might be too young/slow in which case you may want to look at a program like SYRWTLF. I suppose it might depend on how much French your 7th grader has studied and/or whether he or she tends to dislike goofy or silly things. The author does use a dialogue between a mouse and a cow at the start of each chapter and pads in some humor along the way that might be considered childish, but this is what engages my current 5th grader so much. He also offers some basic explanations of English grammar that may be simplistic for a 7th grader but would be necessary for elementary school age children to understand in order to grasp French grammar. The program does teach a great deal of vocabulary/conversational words and has rock solid explanations of the French language though (much clearer than I've seen in other programs), so for this reason I would have used it with my past 7th graders and just let them move faster through the series (but then again my kids appreciate a little goofy humor). Another option is to wait until Level B is released this summer and look at the samples to see if the second level of the program would look more appropriate for your 7th grader. I would also e-mail CAP to ask their opinion. They've been very helpful in the past when I've asked questions! Any other French for Children users have an opinion? I don't want to mislead anyone...
  11. We have also been through many French programs over the years, and French for Children is hands down our favorite! My daughter absolutely loves it, especially the chants and DVD. They are supposed to release level B this summer.
  12. It may vary with the teacher, but my dd says about 30 mins per day.
  13. It sounds as if the French classes through Debra Bell's Aim Academy would work for you. My dd has been taking French through Aim the last two years, and my rising 9th grade ds will be in their French I class next year.
