Haiku
Can I ask why you decided that? We were going to start that in 3rd as well. Do you think it will be too confusing at this point? Â I don't think it would be too confusing, but I do think that it would be more work than necessary at this point. I watched the first six or so dvd lessons of LfC, and it moves VERY quickly. To me it seems that my dd would be having to learn BOTH the grammar AND the vocabulary at the same time, and it seems that LfC would move too quickly for that. I thought about slowing it down and taking two weeks for every lesson, thus completing A in two years, but in the end I decided that I would rather use the time that would be devoted to LfC to focus more intensively on writing. We'll be doing FLL3 this year and 4 next year, and then I will evaluate where our grammar and writing stands and see whether I feel we're ready to move into Latin. Â I was already thinking about this myself, but then I met a college kid who was homeschooled classically, and the FIRST thing I asked him about was Latin. He said that he started Latin in 6th grade and spent 6th, 7th, and 8th grades building a foundation (he used Latin Road), and then in high school he moved on to a reading course and was fully prepared. I thought about what would happen if we did Latin in 3rd, 4th, and 5th and then tried a reading program, or if we did Latin in 3rd-8th and then did a reading program, and I decided that it's one of those things where we could take a long time to learn something now that would probably come easier in a few years. Incidentally, the kid I met mentioned that his mother started Latin in 3rd grade with his younger sister and then abandoned it, feeling that the sister didn't have a firm enough grammar grasp to benefit from Latin at that age. Â I've always been conflicted about when to start Latin, and I felt self-imposed pressure to do it "TWTM way," but even though my dd wanted to start in 3rd grade, it never really felt right to me. Â Sorry for the novel. ;) Â Tara Edited May 2, 2010 by TaraTheLiberator
