  1. We use an HDMI cable, too... It allows us to watch Youtube, netflix, etc. on the TV. You can attach smartphones, tablets or a laptop to the TV with the HDMI cable. So if someone needs to use one device for something else, you can use the internet connection on another to watch a video on the TV.
  2. If you can get your hands on Cathy Duffy's 100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum, you'd be in good shape. Check your library and if you really like it you can get it on Amazon. Here's a link to her website http://www.grovepublishing.com/. I also like www.homeschoolreviews.com They have many different curricula options broken down by subject.
  3. ReidFamily, I want to thank you for starting this thread. I just found it today and have really gleaned a lot from it, too. It's helpful to see how Classical education is done in other home school environments. We have been doing it for about 3 years now. Sometimes I feel like we're getting our groove, and sometimes I feel like we're falling off the wagon. This conversation is a good way to help keep things in perspective.
  4. :iagree: I even went to a pot luck wedding one time. The couple was really cool and the wedding had more of a family atmosphere...
  5. It has been interesting reading through this thread-- I wasn't sure if I was going to make it emotionally... Apparently my train was one of the last ones to be allowed through the WTC subway stop before they shut it down, so I had no idea what was going on until I came up in midtown Manhattan. The first plane hit while I was still underground. I thought that there had been a bomb threat in my building. Then my co-workers clarified what had happened, and we turned on a TV in the conference room. We saw the second plane hit. I got really scared because my huband worked in the World Financial Center which was connected to WTC by a skywalk. Fortuately, he did not have to go in early that day. He had made an arrangement with his boss to come in at 10 since he had been coming in early the whole week prior. He heard the news and never got on the train. I just thank God to be here today. We did have friends of friends who perished, but not a person that we knew directly. I think this is a miracle in and of itself given the fact that we had numerous friends and colleagues working down there. My husband was fine, I was fine and our unborn daughter (who is now 8) was fine. It was a day that literally changed the course of our lives. His department was outsourced and 18 months later we moved down to Atlanta. The Haiti earthquake was another near scrape for our family, but no one was touched...
  6. Cool congratulations!:hurray::hurray::hurray::hurray: Now the fun begins!
  7. :iagree: My daughter and I had a great time with 1 and 2... Plus Susan Wise Bauer includes many interesting women in the books...
  8. I think you are perfectly justified in the way that you have reacted. :grouphug: Like hockeymom, we don't answer the door when my husband is not home. But I do think that it's okay to answer with your dog right there with you if you feel comfortable doing that... Otherwise talk through the door (don't open it) or ignore...
  9. We used Zaner Blosser and then followed up with Evan-Moor. I like Evan Moor...:)
  10. No you don't need the workbook, but I find that it's nice to have. Like Brenda, I found that the hardcover (The Complete Writer) book is a great overview. When we first started WWE, I pulled my own resources for narration and copywork, and we only did the grammar parts of FLL. I did that for the whole 1st year of WWE. Since then, I've found that the workbooks free my time up and expose us to literature that I may not have included. I think they are worth it, but I'm glad that I have the hardcover book, too. I would skip buying WWE1 workbook and opt for the hardcover, then buy 2, 3, and 4 after you are familiar with SWB writing instruction philosophy. I've seen a lot of growth in my daughter's writing using this method.
  11. My daughter is in 3rd grade and we do both WWE and R&S. We haven't been doing it long, but I really like it. We started WWE 2 in 2nd grade and just added R&S this year. We do R&S every other day. We do much of it orally, so she does not write all of the lessons. We do WWE M-Th as the lessons are laid out. I know some others have mentioned that they skip R&S composition exercises when working with a separate writing program, but we have not run into this issue yet. I don't think that we will for 3rd grade and I plan to continue with WWE 3. I may eventually phase WWE out after the 4th book depending upon what I think of R&S writing exercises. HTH! :) ETA: We do the worksheets on the off days as a refresher.
