lynn
So over the years we have been creative, today he gets a Boston Cream Pie for his birthday "cake" What are some non traditional birthday cakes have you seen over the years?
Chris in VA
My husband either has pie or trifle for his. My dd's is one day after--so far, still cake for her!
bettyandbob
Ds gets pie. Often apple. I have made coconut cream. He likes Boston cream pie maybe I will do that this year.
kiana
Well, it's still a cake, but this year my brother is getting our best attempt to duplicate the SECOND cake: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/130111876707045097/ I think we're gonna use vampire teeth instead though. Bambam
My dh does not like cake either, so over the years he has requested banana pudding, cornbread, and tapioca pudding. We are happy to make him whatever he wants.
73349
We have often chosen pumpkin pie, cannoli, or other desserts for birthdays.
Matryoshka
My dd always wants a strawberry Kuchen for her birthday. A Kuchen is not really a cake - it's like halfway to pie, but it's not pie either, as the base is made from a batter, not dough. Here's a pic: :
JFSinIL
Ones of my twins, now 22, has asked for lemon squares the past few years.
underthebridge
I've seen "cakes" made of cookies, profiteroles, eclairs, brownies, even doughnuts! Ice cream filled crepes would be delicious, as would bananas foster or sticky toffee pudding.
RocCityMom
We've done ice cream cakes, ricotta cheesecake, pineapple upside down cakes, and -your-own sundaes for people who are not into traditional cakes with icing.
Pawz4me
My oldest DS always wants a pumpkin pie. His birthday is in the latter part of November, so close to (and sometimes on) Thanksgiving, when there's pumpkin pie around anyway. But he always wants one of his very own. Amy in NH
Only one of mine likes a chocolate cake for his birthday. The rest want pineapple upside-down cake, carrot cake, and chocolate pie.
Heatherwith4
I have asked for strawberry pretzel salad a couple of years. My grandmother wanted cheesecake for her 90th this year. Oldest DS, whose birthday is this week, wanted a Chess pie (and who can blame him?) but then he realized we couldn't put a Power Ranger on there. So he's having a regular cake after all.
KatieJ
Due to food allergies our oldest grandson had apple crisp as his birthday cake for many years.
Cinder
My FIL always had pumpkin pie for his Nov b-day. Generally my dc ask for cake but one year ds1 asked for Dunkin' Donuts as his "cake" instead.
Critterfixer
Cheesecake. I've gone with this several years now as my birthday cake, since I can make a good GF free crust now with a shortbread type cookie and serve it with fresh peaches. This may be my year without a cake, I just realized with my kitchen all torn up. But maybe I'll get around to making the filling here and bake it later today at Moms. AlmiraGulch
My oldest DS always wants a pumpkin pie. His birthday is in the latter part of November, so close to (and sometimes on) Thanksgiving, when there's pumpkin pie around anyway. But he always wants one of his very own. Hey.....mine, too! Very close to, and sometimes on, Thanksgiving. I wonder if we share? I'm another that always requests pie. Often pumpkin, because I love it, but I've also requested pecan, key lime, cherry, and coconut cream. Oh, and cheesecake, which is really a pie in my world. LostSurprise
Most of my boys prefer other things to cake so we've had giant cookies, 'ice cream' cakes (homemade), brownies, pie, mini cheesecakes, doughnuts (homemade), aebleskiver. The weirdest cake I've seen was made of layers of brownie (cooked) and uncooked cookie dough held together with ganache. Wow.
shukriyya
Mine asks for brownies with cream cheese icing :D
bibiche
My family does not have many traditional cake lovers either. My brother and nephew always have pie, DS always has clafoutis and/or a charlotte.
theYoungerMrsWarde
MIL made dh (before we were married) a peanut butter....pudding? instant pudding with cool whip or something and peanut butter with a hard chocolate top in a square, sided dish. For his 7th birthday, ds wanted to make his very own cheesecakes (MasterChef fan) so I found an easy Bisquick recipe and he made a cheesecake all by himself. With sugared blueberries on top. :) Before that year, I always made apple-sauce spice cake cup cakes for the kids' birthdays with lightly sweetened whipping cream on top instead of frosting. sassenach
Ds gets apple pie and dh got bread pudding this year. I always get cheesecake or some chocolate mouse type pie. Dd17 gets cheesecake. Dd9 gets ice cream cake. We're not much into regular cake around here!
Amber in SJ
My two June birthdays always ask for strawberry pie, so that is what they get. I always request cheesecake or pie of the chocolate cream or banana cream variety. Amber in SJ
Lizzie in Ma
Youngest and I hate cake. We have made ice cream cakes and dobos torte in past years.
Spryte
My father always has pumpkin pie, too - another Nov bday. DH is a chocolate cheesecake man. And I'm all about pie, any fruit pie really, but I usually have cake - whatever someone else makes for me is good. I'm not too picky. This thread makes me want Key Lime Pie though! obsidian
Cheesecake, ice cream cake, and a pumpkin roll. Various types of pie, too. And now I want all the deserts listed here. :glare:
J-rap
My son is on the paleo diet. Last year we made him a chocolate cake made from fava bean flour and avocados. You would never know!
Pippen
Does he like Angel Food Cake? My MIL makes a frosting/filling by mixing Cool Whip, a jar of hot fudge sauce, and chopped up Heath candy bars. My mom would always make me angel food cake with strawberries, bananas, vanilla pudding, and whipped cream--sort of trifle-like but only still in cake form. There's always a birthday cookie. MicheleinMN
We call it heaven in a(n) (Oreo) pie crust: cream cheese, whipped cream, and powdered sugar base layer with milk chocolate and butterscotch pudding mixed together with a topping of whipped cream if you like. Pound cake with different glazes - today is my dear son's birthday, so the glazes today are tart lemon glaze and also a brown sugar glaze added per slice not together. ;) Oh, and whipped cream for those who prefer it. MicheleinMN
My husband either has pie or trifle for his. My dd's is one day after--so far, still cake for her! Ds's birthday is today and dh's is tomorrow. Dh ALWAYS has chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, so ds feels free to try other things for his birthday. And they NEVER share a cake or party. :) Ds, almost 18, has his birthday next Monday, and then ds, almost 13, has his birthday the following Sunday. Sugar overload: 4 birthdays in 14 days. Susan in TN
We've done Boston Cream before - so yummy! I frequently get birthday pie on request - a nice rhubarb or key lime if they can find it in November. Cheesecake is always welcome!
zoobie
My dad gets pumpkin pie. DS has requested ice cream instead of cake. He used to eat only the frosting off cakes. :)
Allearia
My boys always request an icebox cake, though I miss making and decorating a traditional cake. The icebox cake is much easier. Basically chocolate cookie wafers layered with whipped cream, looks gorgeous, no baking. http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2007/01/wafer-wonderland/
