What are your "go-to" meals?

Recommended Posts

I was talking with my sister-in-law last weekend and she was complaining how she is so tired of serving up the same meals week after week. And I feel the exact same way. Then today I thought, I bet what she's serving up week after week is different from what I'm serving up. Maybe some of the meals are the same, but most are probably different. So, would you all post what your top 5 go-to meals are. Maybe we'll all get some ideas from each other. I'm not looking for the exotic. I'm looking for the ones that you serve up week after week. No recipes right now. Just names of meals.

Here are mine:

1. veggie burgers

2. pasta

3. red beans

4. black bean burritos

5. vegetable frittata

PS. Even though mine are vegetarian doesn't mean this thread is only for vegetarians.

Mine happen to be vegetarian, too. I am also gluten free:

Tempeh tacos (the current household favorite)

Eggs, usually with potatoes

Stir-fry (go to stir fry is any veggies we feel like, with or without tofu or tempeh--usually without, because I try to avoid too much soy--and ginger, soy sauce, and hoisin sauce, which are things I tend to keep on hand)

Chili

Pasta (I avoid pasta, even the gluten free ones; this is my husband's go-to)

Several variations of:

chicken/rice/veggie

fish/rice/veggie

grilled salmon or chicken/roasted sweet potatoes/green veggie (This one's kind of new.)

roast pork, beef, or chicken/potatoes/veggie

spaghetti with sauce and Italian sausage/pasta/broccoli

tacos with various fixings

1. tacos

2. stir fry

3. pasta and meatballs

4. breakfast for dinner

5. mix and match traditional: meat (pork loin, pork chops, chicken thighs or chicken breasts) + starch (rice, yellow rice, orzo and peas or roast potatoes) + vegetables (quick salad, green beans or asparagus)

Baked chicken (whole or split ck. breasts or BL/SL)

Mexican: Taco or enchiladas

Soup, salad, and homemade bread :) (Kids like PB and honey on the bread anyway!)

Italian: A pasta or homemade pizza

I like roasts because they are versatile but they get bought only when on sale. Soon we butcher our own steer :hurray: The leftovers are great shredded on buns or a salad, same with the left over chicken. They usually get potatoes as their side. I serve salad or other veggie with all.

Obviously I'm not vegetarian! I use the meat as the main part/base of the meal.

Guest inoubliable

Tacos - made with garbanzo beans and a homemade version of taco seasonings, lettuce, vegan cheddar

Vegan sloppy joes - super cheap, packaged in a box at our local supermarket

Pasta - usually penne pasta with broccoli and garlic, sometimes veggie spirals with a tomato sauce

Veggie soup, potato soup

Curried chickpeas on basmati rice with naan

HUGE salads with a homemade vegan ranch dressing

And on really busy days with late nights (once a month or so)? DH will sometimes steam an enormous amount of broccoli in water/liquid aminos and we'll all have huge bowls of it.

Blah. I'm so tired of my go-to meals, but my evenings are so different all the time, I haven't put any imagination into coming up with something better.

Ours are:

Chili/tacos (we use chili meat in our tacos)

Grilled chicken

Chicken Stir-Fry

Sloppy Joe

Pizza

Hot Dogs

Baked Chicken

Rinse. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat...blah. I detest meal planning.

Pinterest has saved my boring dinner rut. I've been trying at least 2 new recipes per week.

Regular rotation meals:

soup of some sort (veggie, veggie beef, chicken tortilla, white chicken chili, broccoli cheese)

pasta of some sort (spaghetti, tortellini, ziti - baked or with red sauce or alfredo, shrimp)

baked chicken (various marinades or toppings)

pork tenderloin

tacos (beef, chicken, shrimp)

Some of the things we eat most often include:

homemade pizza (every Sunday)

breakfast night! (every Thursday)

bean, beef, or fish tacos (beans done overnight in crock pot)

crock pot chicken w/rice (1 c. rice, 1 c. lemon juice, 1-1/2 c. water, 1 chopped preserved lemon, if you have it!)

chicken soup with eggs stirred into it (I usually turn my portion into hot and sour w/soy sauce, rice vinegar, chili sauce, corn starch)

hamburgers

tofu mac & cheese

spaghetti w/meat sauce

miso soup w/tofu

homemade (CHEAP!) veggie burgers

felafel

shiro (Ethiopian boiled chick pea flour; best description I can think of!)

Those are probably most things we eat at least 1-2x/month.

Wow. This is interesting. I'm surprised by how many of you have breakfast for dinner. I would try that. I think everyone would like it except my dh. Also, I see a lot of folks do soup. I love soup. Love it. Again, it's the husband thing. He'll have it once in a while. But I might try to have it more often.

1. pasta

2. tacos

3. roast chicken or beef

4. meatloaf

5. pork chops

It also changes some with the seasons. In the winter, we do roasts, casseroles, and chicken pot pie. In the summer, we are more likely to do homemade pizza or have dh grill chicken and veggies.

Our go-to sides are broccoli, asparagus, potatoes (white and sweet), cabbage, peas and carrots

1. Black bean burritos/tacos/nachos

2. Channa masala with basmati and assorted sides

3. Pasta/pizza/Italian subs

4. Baked potatoes with toppings and sides

5. Fruits/veggies/breads *

* This last one doesn't have a convenient name but is popular around here. Basically, I either bake or buy a couple of nice loaves of bread and put them on the table alongside bowls of sliced fruits and veggies and condiments. Sometimes, I make a tomato and onion salad with balsamic. Other times, not. If there's good corn on the cob available, I'll add that. My husband and son like little plates of olive oil with spices in which to dip their bread. They also put honey on their fruit. (It's the one non-vegan thing my son eats.) We often do this meal when we're having a movie night, because it's snacky but reasonably healthy.

Stovetop chicken in a cast iron pan with rice (which I usually have in fridge already cooked) and sauteed veggies.

Potstickers or Pierogis from Trader Joe's ;)

Aidelle's sausages with rice and veggies

Soup (now that it's finally cooler) with bread and cheese
