what were your winners and losers in curriculum this year?

Recommended Posts

Gr. 5 (ds 11)

Winners:

Latina Christiana I

R&S English 5

Megawords (this has done wonders for my son's spelling, decoding skills,

and vocabulary)

Mindbenders (ds did for fun last summer)

Piano lessons (after two years self-study, found perfect instructor who is

now moving back to Norway--ds is devastated!)

Just ok:

A Beka Cursive Handwriting 4 (ds loves perfecting his handwriting, but it

was simply busy work)

Losers:

A Beka Arithmetic 5 (pace was too slow for this ds, even after skipping

first 1/3 of the book)

Gr. 3 (ds 9)

Winners:

A Beka Arithmetic 3 (worked well for this ds)

Rod and Staff English 3

A Beka Cursive Handwriting K (worked well starting this ds at the

lowest level, as he struggles to write for

long periods)

Prima Latina (though we dropped for awhile to focus on other things)

Mindbenders (ds did for fun last summer)

Losers:

Ordinary Parents Guide to Reading (but only because of his frustration,

which is due to a vision problem)

Spellwell B, Bb (ds likes it, but it hasn't helped his spelling--probably also

due to the vision problem)

Gr. 1 (ds 7)

Winners:

A Beka Arithmetic 2

First Language Lessons, second grade portion

Spellwell A, Aa

A Beka Cursive Handwriting 1

Prima Latina (ditto above)

Mindbenders

Group subjects

Winners:

Story of the World 3 (we don't do it all--love that I can be flexible,

especially using the CD's in the car!)

The Elements: Ingredients of the Universe (so glad I went with my gut on

this for chemistry--easy to use

and kids loved it)

Adventures in Atoms and Molecules

Looking forward to the following for next school year:

Math and Music, Challenge Math, Mathematics: A Human Endeavor, and many living math books (going to mix it up for ds 11)

Snap Circuits, Physics Workshop, and other fun physical science stuff

Discovery Streaming

Henle Latin I and Lingua Latina 1 (for me! I need to get ahead of the kids

and I've grown to love this subject)

Stuff we LOVED:

the Harp and the Laurel Wreath

Story of the world.

Michael Clay Thompson's stuff--Grammar Island

Minquon

History Odyssey--level 1 Ancients.

Minimus Level 1

the Library!

(this was our first 1/2 year of learning at home. I really liked HO for allowing me to jump in and have a lot of guidance, and library flexibility--and great materials. But I think I will not use the next level, and cover Medieval with Bilioplan, or ??)

Not so Hot:

Sequential Spelling.

While I loved this in theory, it wasn't so great for a just turned 7 year-old, who reads very well. It was nice to just have it on hand and verbally go through the words, while writing down just five out of the 25 words per day, but my son hated it. He reads very well, and spells well, so I think this is something well just put on the back burner for the time.

K12 science

(too much money for the results)

*Your Story Hour CDs (dc listen for HOURS)

*Beautiful Feet Literature Guides (any)

*SWR (for spelling only)

*Classics Book Club (started with 4 other HS families)

*Microscope (bought a high-end one and it has opened up so many "curiosity doors" for dc...way too much fun!)

Winners?

It was a rough year for us. My dd did fine, but I was down sick most of the year and couldn't participate as much as I'd hoped. Anyway,

Winners -

--always Natural Speller. Easy and cheap and it works. Nuff said.

--Math-U-See works but it's expensive. I'm looking at CLE math currently.

--drawing history on large, spiral art pads for Ancient History. My girl is a detailed artist and loves to draw, so I took advantage of it!

Losers -

--Learning Language Arts Through Literature - Lousiest program I've ever used, IMO. We went up a grade higher and it was still a sleeper -way too easy and unchallenging IMHO. The dictation was the only worthwhile thing we did.

Mystery of History Volume 2 with Truthquest

Apologia Elementary, Swimming Creatures of the 5th Day

Commentary for Children on Genesis by Nancy Gantz

Losers

Apologia General Science

I loved it, she hated it. Normally not a problem for me but as she wants to go into nursing, I really want her to love science. Switching to BJU with the dvds for 7th to start, hoping it is a good fit.

Middle Ages lapbook

They were just not a good fit for my dd, she loves lap-booking for the most part, it just was busywork kind of, on top of all our other work.

Easy Grammar 4

Singapore Math

Apologia Astronomy

Our literature selections

Barb's "Handbook of Nature Study" lessons - we're on week 3 and loving it

Natural Speller - works great for us

Okay:

My custom US history curriculum - I tried to schedule too much, nothing like tweaking your own material

Drawing Basics with Thomas Kinkade - I love his instruction, but the Lifepac format is too distracting for us

Losers:

Where is the US are you Geography - boring

Any notebooking - we tried for history and science

What is Barb's "Handbook of Nature Study" lessons ?

Here it goes...

Winners for my 8th grader

Pacs Science Natural Science Mysteries

SOTW 2 and 3

LOF Fractions and Decimals (algebra has posed more of a challenge)

Megawords (every level all the way through between the 7th and 8th grades)

Winston Grammar Basic with written history narrations

So so for my 8th grader

Sequential Spelling 3

Writing Trails Science (got this to teach outlining...too easy and redundant for his age range, but not a flop altogether)

Winners for my 2nd grader

School of Tomorrow English (fits his learning style)

Rod and Staff Spelling

Spelling Plus Dictation (started this as an intro. to dictation-we love it and he does not want to drop this at all)

and CLE math-went quickly through quizzes and tests to be able to start the 2nd grade level in the 3rd grade

Tatras Vertical Phonics-just recite our phonograms and go over our word lists.

Pathway readers 2nd grade books 1 and 2, he did not like the font in 3, so we didn't get to it.

Christian Liberty Nature readers-these totally fit his style, so these will be our readers for the third grade.

Bible Study Guide Student sheets...we may just go to using the teacher's manual in the third grade as I don't like the intermediate level worksheets, but we loved the Beginner's level.

Cursive Connections-I got this workbook A from Rainbow Resource and we have loved it as an introduction to cursive. A page a day and it's painless. His cursive writing is beautiful!

So so's, not total flops were

Abeka Science and History-he was a little bored and wanted more information, but we did read a lot of trade books to enhance this...still debating on whether to use the next level. I know with each level there is a beefing up, so to speak, so we may stay with these...or switch to Ace or BJU for science in our 3rd grade year.

Rod and Staff Math 2-we got to finish 3/4ths of this program, but I realized that my son didn't have a clue what was going on and started to dread math and have daily tears. This is when a dear friend gave me about 5 year's worth of CLE math lightunits and I decided to give it a go. So far so good, but I haven't used it long enough to really be able to give a review about it. So far he loves the variety in CLE, but the jury on retention is still out.

Every year I get better and better at picking curriculum and sticking it out unless it's causing tears. If it's not causing tears and we can tweak it to make it work, we will, and we do!

Blessings!!!

Dee

TT Algebra

Losers:

Applications in Grammar

Winners:

5th grade ds:

Singapore Math

Writing Tales 2 (WT1 was a hit also, but this has helped his writing so much!!)

Losers:

Intermediate Language Lessons

I've decided that because my ds had done 2 years and my dd had done 4 years of R&S Grammar, ILL and Applications in Grammar just weren't good choices for them. We are returning to R&S Grammar and will not "fix" that subject ever again, as it is a good, solid choice!

Winner for both:

MFW 1850-Modern. I can't say enough good things about our 2 years of MFW!!

This year I had 5th, 1st, K, a toddler, and a newborn. I had a rough time this year with any non-independent work, especially when the toddler started walking.

Winners:

Hiring a mother's helper -- saved our homeschool

Singapore Math, all levels

ETC -- best books ever

OPGTR (when we got to it) -- dd doesn't like it, but she's learning to read

IEW SWI-A and Ancient History-Based Writing Lessons -- I'm no longer worried about my dd9's writing progress

FLL 1&2 (when we got to it)

WWE 1 (when we got to it)

FLL 4 (when we got to it)

Megawords

Timeline (when we got to it)

God's Design Science -- Animals

Mixed Bag/Jury's Still Out:

TOG Yr 1 Redesigned -- I need to plan out the whole year ahead of time. Planning a week or a quarter at a time just doesn't work, especially if you're giving birth around the beginning of the second quarter. Also, something in the layout of the Overview pages doesn't lend itself well to scheduling on the kids' end -- too easy for things to fall through the cracks. I think my kids need a list format or something. SOTW, D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths were the biggest hits.

God's Design Science -- Human Body: They left out the endocrine system, as well as the kidneys and some other organs. Huh??? The kids enjoyed it, though.

God's Design Science -- Plants: Still in progress. I'm supplementing with Apologia's Botany book for dd9. I'd like GDS to be a little meatier. Sometimes they give terminology and define it, other times they just use plain, simplified English terms. I think the Plants book was written to be used first, and we're using it last.

Apples and Pears Spelling -- it's more teacher-intensive than I can really handle right now, so we don't get to it as often as I'd like. But I knew that going in, and we started it only a few weeks ago.

Losers:

SWO -- ds loves it, and flies through the lessons, but retains nothing.

SYRWTL Spanish 1 -- Like always, Spanish just falls off the schedule. I think the book moved a little too fast for my dd. I think we'll give it another try, now that we've sped up on math and her writing is going well.

Wordsmith Apprentice (was that this year or last year?) -- dd liked it, but I thought it moved too slowly.

TOG Writing Aids -- not enough step-by-step instruction for me.

My turn! My turn!

Winners:

Participation in Science Olympiad (highlight of the year!)

A great dance teacher, karate teacher, and orchestra leader for extras

Apologia Physical Science in co-op situation

Life of Fred Math (love it)

Sequential Spelling (I tweak it a little)

Apples Spelling

Uncle Eric books

Lamb's Shakespeare Stories (downright fun at times)

Participation in local mom-run co-op (the kids made a fun yearbook, made friends, etc.)

Election unit study and volunteering at local party office and going to a political rally for a VP candidate (wow, the kids loved it and two ended up with their picture in the paper)

Rosetta Stone German (just got this a month ago so it's still got that "new" feeling)

TLP's Pride and Prejudice Guide

Lightning Literature 7

So so:

Uncle Eric study guides by Jane Williams (I think reading the book and discussing or taking notes would be adequate)

Further Up and Further In Narnia book study (it's a great study but as we got more involved in Science Olympiad, we did less and less of the activities in this book -- I didn't give it a fair shake -- great vocabulary, decent Bible)

Horizons Math 3 (switched from Singapore -- can't find a good math for this child)

PLL and ILL (switching to BJU for these students next year)

Didn't work for us:

Singapore math 2A and 2B (I like it, dd7 didn't)

Winner

K12 Icademy-they have a great bunch of teachers who are very attentive and the curriculum is great. Clubs are also a great plus

Loser

K12 Icademy- Expense, toooo exorbitant. Going broke. I think they could charge half the amount. Just my opinion.

Ironic, huh. Even though its a loser in price category, dd will continue. Pros outweight the one con.

What was your favorite book from Core 5?

Tales of a Korean Grandmother was one of our favorite books this year!! Torches of Joy is good, but it is really looong! We have been reading it since January. We did not do the bible (RGAA), it seemed too time consuming! We follow the bible reading (Core 5) and do our own bible study. We do love the EHE though.
