Coronavirus interrupting therapies--advice
Nancy in NH replied to Nancy in NH's topic in Special Needs Board
Thanks, guys! This isn't for me--my kids are adults and two are in college. I have just been reading so many desperate posts and I knew you guys here would be a great resource. I appreciate anything you share that I can pass on to those who need it! Nancy -
Hi everyone! I'm no longer homeschooling, but always a homeschooler at heart, so when I see people struggling to deal with their kids coming home from school, especially those who have special needs, IEP's, receiving ABA in school and such, I feel compelled to reach out to you all to see if you any advice I can offer them. I'm a member of the NH Autism FB group and there are so many parents who are worried about their kids missing much-needed OT, PT, speech, etc. Some are opting to continue appointments, others are struggling at home with kids who are melting down over the change to their routines. I'm wondering if any of you wonderful parents who are homeschooling kids with autism might have some resources or strategies that might help these families. Thanks! Nancy in NH

Nancy in NH replied to RootAnn's topic in The College Board
DD decided after a great admitted student day visit and a 'shadow a student day' experience. Where: University of New Hampshire Why: full tuition, also several visits that kept giving more and more reasons to love it, close to home Major: linguistics, possibly double major (French)- 331 replies

Spot on for us, too, within $1000-$2000. Some NPCs didn't include merit aid in the calculation, so that part was a big question mark until merit was awarded upon admittance.

Oh, my! I laughed out loud! Thanks for sharing.

Sorry to hear about Duke, but congrats on your DD's decision to attend UNC at Chapel Hill. Best wishes to her!

DD bounces back quickly--but man, what a brutal night. All she wanted was her favorite--chocolate tsunami--and they had run out! She settled for black raspberry and there were smiles on the ride home.
-
DD disappointed--no from Harvard and Yale. She took the Harvard one ok, but is quite sad about Yale. Time for a trip to the local ice cream stand. Hoping for better news for the rest of you waiting.

Congrats! So happy for you and your DD!

Last two decisions today for DD. We are bracing ourselves for the rejections... I'll be glad when this part is over. It's bittersweet, though, as this is my youngest and our homeschooling journey is soon coming to a close. Good luck to all!

"USS Indecision sets sail"--love it! Witty and SO true!

It's hard to look back and 2nd guess. Your DS did what he thought was the right decision at the time, and at a time when these kids are overloaded with making these big decisions. It's SO hard on them! My DD was quite ill for six weeks during the fall and missed all the ED/EA rounds. She just simply couldn't keep up the pace of the application process and her heavy, demanding senior course-load. She is now wishing she could've at least hit a few EA's and maybe an ED round, because the waiting is grating on her (and me!), but there's no going back. Just moving forward and hoping it'll play out so that she has some options. Best wishes to your son as the next few weeks bring the rest of the decisions. And best wishes to everyone else on the list, too! We'll get through this!

So sorry! That acceptance rate is approaching Harvard's last year and is lower that Yale's was! Yikes.

Talk to me about a gap year after high school
Nancy in NH replied to Peaceseeker's topic in The College Board
DS took a gap year to work on his repertoire for college auditions and piano examinations, and he worked at this job, too, to save money. Taking the gap year wasn't a problem with institutional scholarships. Some outside scholarships for high school seniors, though, may have a stipulation that the student must attend the fall following graduation. I will add that DS was able to secure some rather sizable outside scholarships (renewable) during his gap year and even during his first two years of college. They are out there, and if you get good enough aid at the school of choice, then it doesn't come into the equation at all. DS's path has not been linear, for sure, but he's getting great support financially. -
DD waitlisted at Holy Cross and Trinity--the two schools she threw on her list as a backup (with a backup major) if she didn't get in where her major is offered. She has some good options and still two more decisions to go, so moving on...

Looking for an Italian curriculum...
Nancy in NH replied to mazakaal's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Yes, EST. Mrs. O'Connell records all the classes and she is extremely flexible and accommodating. If you have any concerns, drop her an email. I think missing in the first few weeks would be ok, as long as the student can handle it. DD has really enjoyed the online environment for learning languages (she's in French IV, Italian II and Spanish I this year). I think it's essential for learning a new language to have as many opportunities to practice speaking it as possible. DD has made a few friends in her classes, too, which is just an added bonus. I highly recommend it! -
Looking for an Italian curriculum...
Nancy in NH replied to mazakaal's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
My DD (12th) has been taking Italian (currently in Italian II) through Big River Academy with Guiliana O'Connell. She is a native speaker, who I believe also teaches at the university level in CT. She is an extremely warm and caring instructor. DD has been dealing with some health issues this year and Mrs. O'Connell has been very accommodating and supportive. She teaches all the way up through Italian IV. Big River Academy posts their statement of faith on their website (I believe the kids learn Bible verses in Italian), in case this might be an issue for you. She uses the textbook Salve! in both Italian I and II. The courses are $200 per semester, and the semesters are 15 weeks long with two breaks each semester. DD has really enjoyed working with Mrs. O'Connell. -
Yes, I kind of just said that a few posts ago. Just trying to send some positive vibes as people anxiously await decisions.
-
That is a possibility. I think if they're interested, it can't be a bad sign, right?
-
DD was interested in some of the Ivies only because her major is offered at most (maybe all?) of them. One reached out to her via email last year, encouraging her to apply. I didn't think it was much more than marketing (it came shortly after SAT scores were released). She did more research and did end up visiting that school and ultimately applied. She put a 2nd Ivy in the mix, visited, and applied to that one as well. Oddly, the one that has heavily marketed to her did not offer an interview, but the 2nd one (that she never heard a peep from until she showed interest) did. Who knows what it all means, but it just goes to show we can't read too much into anything when it comes to the top tier institutions. Of course, @Calming Tea, I hope for your son's sake it does mean something!

I have been subtracting 3 from your countdown Dd is waiting on two decisions coming out on 3/28. The waiting is starting to get to me! We've been so busy lately that, up until last week, we hardly had time to think about it. But now... Ugh! I hate wishing away the last remaining months of our family's homeschooling journey, but I wouldn't mind if March could move out a little faster!

Glad you are having a good year! My DD is taking 3 foreign languages this year and loving it. She would've loved to push certain other subjects out of the way, too, if she could have, to make way for more.
