  1. I am going to say that my children aspire to good colleges. My daughter likely wants to go to an alma mater of family. This list would include U of Chicago, Carleton College, and Stanford. She also has MIT on her list. While I think she does not have enough direction as of yet to know for sure, it does give the idea that she needs a good solid program that would keep her options open. My son wants, specifically, to be an engineer. My understanding is he thinks electrical engineer but is also considering chemical or mechanical. He has no idea as to the college. I used to think that the children would need the 4 by 5 program. (4 yrs of each 5 major subjects). But now I have been rethinking this. Both children intend to stay pretty much in math based careers. DS wants to take Latin for his foreign language requirement and my daughter wants French. What would the minimum number of credits you would expect a child to have of foreign language to graduate? I am not saying they could not take more as an elective, but I do not want them to miss out on school of interest over a missing course. I used to think 4, but now am wondering if 2 is fine, especially when there is a strong level of courses in other areas, like extra math. How much science would you say? Right now, I am certain each child will take 4 credits, but if they stop at 3 and take no AP courses in science, will that hinder them? I know they will do 4 years English. The math is going to be 5+ yrs for one and 6 for the other. (one started algebra in 7th grade and the other started in 8th grade, both intend to complete AP mathBC and AP stat) And history/geography/social studies courses? I know most colleges make a huge deal of the number of AP courses passed with a certain score. When my stepson applied for colleges last year, he was shocked to find out he was not even in the running for Notre Dame when they told him they did not really admit anyone with less than 3 AP's. He had none I think. He did not get in. Ok..thanks in advance for your help to make up a guidline list of what the kids can or will take and such. Thanks! Also, if a high school level science class is taken in 8th grade, can it be counted toward high school?
  2. I now own Lials Intro Algebra, Jacob's algebra, and Keys to. My daughter loves Keys to best and I actually like it, but want a thorough program as she plans to be an engineer someday and is quite good at math. DD would be happy to stay with Keys to, and if I felt it was complete, I would be too. So I am trying to decide between Lial's and Jacobs. (unless someone here tells me that Keys to is actually so very complete for Algebra 1) What do you think?
  3. No, we sold our original home and only live in this one house. Thanks for the help. I did call one of the colleges that DDD is interested in (it is one family members have gone to anyway) and they said they take the things in to consideration that I have mentioned and I do not need to worry. So that is good. I will still worry, but we will see what happens then. I have just been worried since so many people have been posting lately about affording college and I looked over the website someone linked about considering financial aid and it brought up your house value and such.
  4. My FIL said to set it up but he is disabled because of the stroke so MIL went along with it while it was being discussed, but then later, informed DH that she would not allow it to happen. I included all that in my previous post about it all. MIL never accused DH or I of being on drugs. Sorry that you have gotten some things confused.
  5. I am a definite Colin Firth fan. Now you can go out and rent all the movies he is in. yummy!
  6. I suspect part of the reason for the increase is related to the higher use of SUVs. While it originally still happened with other cars, SUV are particularly high and have limited vision. Now, way more SUVs are owned and there are more of these accidents.
  7. LOL. I get through these explanations these by reminding myself that some day, they will be gone (see SWB post about her son) and I will be desparate for anything, including a conversation of video games. I use those same thoughts when I trip on toys. (or right now as my dd is frustrated and explaining something to me)
  8. He is gone a lot, it sounds like a hard year. You are not clingy, it sounds very normal. I have not been through this though so I cannot give good advice. I dread the days. Maybe get him a cell phone and call him all the time (I know, time difference and he will be busy somewhat). ((((hugs))))
  9. I always post before I read other peoples posts because I do not want to be swayed by what others say. But then, I think once, someone told me I should have read what the others said first. But that particular time, there were pages of replies. It would have taken forever. If I do read other peoples replies and change my mind about what was said, then I can always edit my post.
  10. 1-2 towels. He should hang them dry. I would send 2 for just in case. Thing is, he is completely clean when he uses them, fresh out of the shower. I would send a hand towel maybe for after shaving and brushing is teeth and all. But he has to cart all this home every week. Best to have the lessor amount.
  11. I tend to be negative unfortunately. But it is because if I say good things, I am afraid of coming off as bragging or something. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents growing up and was taught that it is very important to be humble. I am still not comfy saying much that might possibly be perceived as bragging or anything like that. My mother is worse than me. I am not sure what to do about it with regards to other people. Maybe just try to change the topics to nice things?
  12. My sister was with neice (11) at a place today where there was an older man who was a power professional type and he asked my sister where neice went to school and when she said where (a specific public school) he said "she is so well mannered that I thought she was homeschooled." How is that for you all..I love it!
